Verizon has a $65/mo unlimited data plan for international travelers, if Sprint does, get that. Also get Fring, it will allow you to use Skype from your mobile. Also this Engadget article has some good ideas.

Humm...I guess you could just put a local SIM in the slot and get good to go...like I'm doing in my country (i.e. unless you're roaming all around Europe). :-\"

Hate to say it but, search. We need a sticky on this topic. Anyway, the way to do this IMHO is to contact Sprint:

Inside USA: 1-888-226-7212

Outside USA (toll free): 001-817-698-4199

A get free SIM to put into the phone. They will then charge you $2 a day for data pretty much anywhere, and then you can use Skype Mobile. Regular calls run .5-1.5$, but you just look at the missed calls and call them back via Skype....

If you liked this response, please thank.

If you think we need a stickie on the topic tell me as I keep writing the same stuff....

if youre gonna use voip, sprint has a $40/mo. unlimited international data plan which gets pro-rated to $2/day if you dont use it for a full month

thx for the response guys, i got skype going, but i just realized i will still be using data. (for skype too). im going to call sprint and see what they suggest,
im only leaving for 2 weeks, i wont be calling mush, i just need to be able to call or receive calls or text messages. and this is only a 1 time thing. i was invited and decided to go. :)
i tried using search, read alittle bit of the post but didnt find skype anyware, also seems like skype took down the link on there site. something so do with them no supporting it anymore or something.

Re: leaving the contry for a few weeks, need help on any tips how to use the phone.

depending on what time of the day you leave...you have to call sprint at least 3-4 hours before you leave to go to the airport....at least that's what they told me when i went out of the country back in april. rep said so that i dont get charged for the day(s) im still in the US. it takes at least 15 minutes to provision your phone for it. and you gotta make sure you have the sprint supplied sim card in your phone.

Im heading out of the country too, and am wondering how you guys are getting these "$/day" option and "international data" plans?? i have been in contact with sprint via chat and phone, and all they tell me it's .016 cents/KB....no mention of any data "plans" while overseas. guess I'll try contacting them again.

whoever you spoke with is bs'ing you. keep contacting them until you get a rep that actually knows what he/she is doing.

lol...brings the term "world class customer service" to another level.

Stop the hassle and just buy a local simcard at the city you're at, the Sprint TP2 is factory unlocked for international GSM carriers, you get local data and calling rates, beats any international plan they might have.

I've heard similar stories about Verizon, too. The rep will deny , deny, deny, but if you look around on their website there it is: International Data Plan. The amount is different than Sprint, $65/mo vs. $40/mo, but the idea is the same. If you don't use the whole month they pro-rate the cost for the amount of time you do use. Don't give up! :headbang:

this would be great, but i need to have my regular number so people back in the states can contact me without dialing an international number.

Google Voice has very cheap rates if you can't get your skype on.

yeah...would not even bother doing sprint international roaming as an option. the per minute charge is expensive. your best bet is to just do skype or google voice.

Same of the above. They charged $40 per month (it can be prorated close to $2 per day for data plan). In addition what helps is to have google voice so you don't have to check your voice mail with skype but can read it or hear it over your email message. I set it up like this and it helps rather than checking all missed calls. Please thanks if you like the response :)

Good point. Voice mails left w/Google Voice can be automagically emailed or SMS'd to your phone incurring only data charges I believe. I still haven't wrapped my head around all you can do using Skype and GV, but it's pretty darn powerful.

Re: leaving the contry for a few weeks, need help on any tips how to use the phone.

For the 7657th time, need a sticky on international issues. After all this is a quad band phone (very sophisticated) yet simple to use for Sprint overseas.

For Sprint solution:

1. Call them and get free international SIM.
2. Stick SIM in Phone.
3. Call them and say SIM stuck in phone, can you turn it on and charge me $2 a day when I am overseas.
4. Install Skype Mobile.
5. Let people call you, ignore them, call the back with Skype.
6. Find a cheaper solution, anyone?

Cheers

Re: leaving the contry for a few weeks, need help on any tips how to use the phone.

ok so i called sprint, they said its about $2 a day for unlimited date, about 1.50 per min, calling, text are 50 cent if i make send it and 5 cent if i receive 1.
definitely dont want to be calling or sending messages, i set up skype but it sucks lol.
most of the time i cant hear or they cant here me. looks like it needs to be on broadband or high speed internet, regular sprint reception just wont cut it. im going to look into google voice, i know nothing about it.
also, i hate how skype needs to be on, it killed my battery so fast, and the other person needs skype too :( ..

well, sprint is still telling me there's no "plan" for intenational data....and its .016 cents/ kb, and airtime minutes are $3.49/min or $2.29 with their $4.99/ month international roaming plan. im traveling to Fiji so maybe thats something to do wit it??? you guys with the $2/day data offered are lucky! :)

ok...im thinking that since fiji is a small tourist spot in the south pacific - (TOURIST SPOT) being the underlying words - you wouldn't have any problems when it comes to wi-fi. im pretty sure as expensive as the resorts are out there...and the exorbitant amount of $$$ you are shelling out to spend a few days in their deep blue waters...they will be giving you free wifi connection.

but just in case they don't....again, you just have to keep trying and calling until you get the right person that knows what they are doing.

thanks for your responses!! so i finally got an answer from sprint worldwide support. the $40 plan is avaiable HOWEVER, she said the plan must be added prior to 7.11.10, as the plan will be "decomissioned" on that date and will no longer be available after that. without the plan, data is .016/kb. just thought I'd share the info i received. i will add it this week. Thanks again for all the responses! :)

and another one bites the dust. that sucks egg hard!! i rather liked that international data plan when i leave the country months at a time. that $40 monthly was chump change when i would use it months at a time.

oh well...at least you were able to get info on it for your benefit. told you you'll get somebody that will give in. nothing like the power of persistence to break somebody's spirits....lol.

yeah i agree with cloudtp2. even if you got unlucky in not getting the right person to get the ball rolling on this data plan....you are still the luckiest because of the fiji trip. TAKE US PLS!!!!!!!!...lol. enjoy your vacation my friend! and thanks for sharing the info.

I am assuming wherever sprint has "agreements"in place....dunno about speeds. the rep just told me that i would have to add it on prior to 7/11. the add on will stay in effect however long i chose to keep it, but, once i remove it, it will no longer be an available option.

Bad news. I wonder if I will be grandfathered in since I already have the SIM. This was too good to be true....
