SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
I've been looking at every post on the sleep of death over the past few weeks since my new TP2 has the problem. I couldn't find any solution, including switching roms, hard formats, and what not.
I then heard someone say on one board that it might be linked to the micro sd card. I was using a Transcend 8 gb class 6 micro sd when I was having the problems. I switched to my older kingston 4gb class 4 card and I haven't had the problem for 2 days, after having it every single day for the past couple of weeks. I figured this might be helpful information for other people that can't fix the problem any other way. It's worth a try to try other cards and I figured people could post in here what SD card they use and whether they get SOD or not to see if that might be a cause. I think it's important to note that I formatted the SD card, but transferred the same information over to it from the transcend. So just to start off: Transcend 6gb class 6 - Sleep of death (daily) Kingston 4gb class 4 - No sleep of death (at least so far) |
Wirelessly posted (Sprint TP2 6.5 stock: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile6.0) Sprint T7380)
when i had it happen it was the 1 that came with the phone .. also i was running stock rom with some tweaks |
Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Oh, what comes with the phone. I should mention i'm on Sprint TP2 and it doesn't come with a memory card.

OMG like there are not enough SOD thread's already for the love of god stop making new one's and post about them in the existing threads.

Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Thanks for helping out Wesley... Obviously you're not having the problem or else you would appreciate someone offering suggestions as to what could make their phone usable.

im also on sprint & mine came with one .. so many ppl have their thoughts on what causes it, half a$$ fixes n such .... i said a long while ago its just 1 a them issues the tp2 is prone to have. .jus like tp1 & the failing keyboards. just my thought. wesley got a point, but man sometimes catchin up on those threads while browsing on my tp2 gets annoying at times lol |
Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Wesley being very douchey just because his phone doesn't have this problem.
This is a forum for people to ask questions/offer solutions for their phones so this thread is perfectly adequate. My phone has SOD with or without SD card. I'm using a kingston 4 gig class 4 card btw. |

Here are several threads already dedicated to SOD, The Whole point of keeping topic's in the same thread is you as a group can work on a answer. making a bunch of different threads is difficult to keep track of and keep the information together. Ya sooo some of them are 20 or 30 pages long but you say you don't want to read them all? well doesn't that kind of defeat's the whole purpose of the Forum all together, the information is right there but you don't want to read it cause it's to long? Well how much harder is it to try and find several different post on the subject when the information is all over the place. I am trying to help by encouraging everyone to keep all the information is one place so people can find it easer. Personally I would like to see a Mod move all the SOD threads together to make it easer for everyone to research the issue as a whole. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ht=Sleep+death http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ht=Sleep+death http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ht=Sleep+death http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ht=Sleep+death |
Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
In my expierence, the SOD is caused by software in the rom. Most recently a set of taskbar's I was trying that didn't get along with the rest of my rom...

Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
I'm going to speculate that some TP2's just have the SOD problem due to manufacturing / component tolerance out of specs.
I remember my old Mogul just would never work with BT (and others had the same problem), but most would work. I always believed there was something in it that was out of design tolerance. Since new users have the problem with the stock ROM, it's not software. |
Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
i had a trancend 8gb class 6 with no problems, an A-data 16gb class 6 with no probs. for me the SOD started a week after upgrading to sprint 6.5. however it's been working fine so far for 6 weeks. i did 2 hard resets, then reflashed the stock 6.5, hard reset again. the only thing different this time is i left the auto akjust backlght "checked" so far so good.

Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Wesley, posting in one of the old threads isn't very practical. The OP thought he found a possible fix, so in order to highlight his findings, he made a new thread. The thread title notes that the SD card "may" be linked to the SOD. It's not (just another SOD thread). If this were posted as a reply in one of the old threads, it probably wouldn't get as much views because some people would think it was just another user with an SOD or that it's someone jabbering on and on about the same problem and not really providing anything useful. It would get buried so fast , you know it. And it just isn't very practical to go through 30 pages of stuff, especialy if there still isn't a solution in the mix. It's very tedious to read about the same thing over 100 times. When threads get that long, new info should be relayed in to a new thread, so to get better responses. New threads with catchy titles are the key here. I could see if the OP labeled it "Another SOD issue" or something monotonous as usual, but that's not the case here.
Now to get back to the topic here. Never had an SOD on my TP2, yet. But I did have a odd issue on another phone. I don't know if this is relevant but, I had a problem with SOD on my Moto Q9M. If the screen was off when I inserted the MiniSD card (any card) , the phone would never wake up. As long as the screen was on when I inserted it, no problem. It could very well be a problem with WinCE and the SD bus. A com or driver issue. Perhaps the phone tries accessing the card, or something on it, or vice versa, but gets hung up trying to do so in sleep mode. Idk, but it's just a guess. I asked a ton of others with q9M's and they never had the issue I did. So, a bug in the ROM or on the phone, which would not be present on every unit. A manufacturing flaw the inadvertently pops up. Just some guesses here. |

Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Hey everyone,
Just checking in. I still havent had an sod and the phone is running smoothly. I would recommend that everyone whose having it at least try scandisk and defrag on their card as i believe that it could be due to a corrupt card rather than card brand. On another note, i started this thread here because i know i did not want to sift through hundreds of pages of an old thread to find new info and know others probably feel the same. It seems like there are many reasons for the sod as there are different options that work for some people and the same won't work for others. I just hope tis works for some of you too. |

Edit: As soon as i plugged in the headphone jack it went wonky again, flashed back and normal again, so no jack and sd card use, and works fine { bangs head on wall } |

And if it's shown up more with the 6.5 stock, a very feasible explanation could be that a modified driver has different timing conditions that stress a HW tolerance more than in 6.1. I'm speaking as a former ebedded HW/SW engineer - timing issues, race conditions, and mfg tolerances DO exist and are B--ch to find and fix!!! BTW, I've never had a SOD with either 6.1 or 6.5 stock, or a zillion customs, and several different cards. BTW, others feel the same way: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...50&postcount=1 |
Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
I disagree with it being the SD card itself. You probably had something on sd card. I have had to reformat my sd card once.

Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Still no SOD. I was hoping that others would have found a solution to theirs. If it matters, when i formatted my SD card the first time, it was in my laptop's SD slot, which I don't think reads everything correctly (I saw it was calling some files several gigs large when they were only a few megs). The one i'm currently using was formatted using a usb adaptor for SD cards.

Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Just wanted to add my 2c to the mix. Ive gotten it a few times here and there and usually it had something to do with Opera, like i had multiple tabs open. (I edited the amount Im allowed to have open at one time) Yesterday though I downloaded a cab via opera and for the next few hours it would happen constantly. Id restart and it would occur on the restart, in order to restart Id have to use the buttun under the case or plug it into my laptop to pop the screen back on.
I found this thread and popped the sd card out, deleted the file I downloaded and then ran scandisk on it and fix 4 errors. I then deleted a few other files I found that were from the time period that the problems came up and popped the card back in and turned the phone back on. So far I haven't had a single issue and its back to working again. Not sure if the main issue is the card, a corrupted file, opera, or a mix of the three but I wanted to say thanks for pointing me towards the sd card and mention that everytime its happened to me I was doing something with opera, Ive never gotten the sleep of death without that being open. p- |
Re: SD card is possibly linked to sleep of death (SOD) on TP2
Glad to hear it helped you out. I still haven't gotten the SOD since i switched out my card. I need to RMA the bad card and try it out again, but I don't think i'll have the chance any time soon. I'll definately report back with the results though.
