Phone as modem not working
 

Sprint just replaced my TP with a TP2. It has the latest 2.04.651.4 ROM and Windows Mobile 6.5. I'm trying to get the tethering/phone as modem working. But I'm getting "67 Registration" errors anytime I actually try to connect. I've searched the forums and tried evertything I could find on this, like the steps outlined below. But everytime I soft boot the phone, the ForceCellConnection goes back to "phone as modem". Apparently, this stuff is getting forced there in the boot up routines? Is there some way around this?

I really need to get this working, so am open to ANY suggestions, like different ROM's, etc. Does anyone have this working with the latest Sprint ROM?

- Enable USB Teathering -
1. Go to: [HKLM\Services\CMGuardian]
2. Create a new DWORD Value called "Flags" and set the value data to "4"
(if it is already there then skip)
3. Softreset
4. Go to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing]
5: Delete the "isext.dll" entry
6. Go to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing\settings]
7. Change "ForceCellConnection" from "PhoneAsModem" to "Sprint"
8. Softreset

doesnt matter, 6.1 0r 6.5, no any Chef or ROM...this cab still works everytime..been usuing this cab for 2 yrs without fail or charges

Thanks for the idea. I've done several hard resets today, trying different configurations/methods. I am able to get the steps under the "enable tethering" part of my first post to stick now, but I still get the same "67" errors when trying to connect via the Internet Sharing program.

I also tried Tattoed's cab after a hard reset, but it deleted the Internet Sharing program altogether. So that was a no-go, unless I need to use some other method/program to connect with after using that cab?

Again, is there a different/older ROM I can install to get this working? I don't care about having the latest release, especially if it means not being able to tether.

Again, is there anyone that is able to tether with this release of Sprint's ROM?

im runnin the stock 6.5 rom man.. upgraded from 6.1 like most.. this is same cab ive used every time.. you dont go change the registry then do the cab... the cabs do the reg stuff for you.... especially if you hard reset, you shouldnt of had issues after the cab..

Mr. X custom 2.5 rom for the win. I'm tethering now, no problems.

first off...ICS_WModem fix actually gives you ANOTHER interner share icon. Use the one that ONLY allows Sprint as your data connection. You don't need all those other regedits to get things going.

Secondly, there is also an app called WMWifiRouter. It is now a paid app. Once upon a time, it was free. I'm sure if you searched/googled enough you'll run across a free/OLDER version. I personally suggest paying for it...because it is worth what you pay AND THEN SOME!

Lastly, before you do anymore...I'd say clear storage (hard reset) and start over fresh.

I have this same problem. I had a diamond that did not have this problem with 6.5, so I'm confused about what it could be

Yes, I understand it gives me a 2nd IS icon. I deleted the old one first from Windows/Start Menu. But I get the "67" errors with the created one, too. But most threads I've seen that install that cab also mention the regedits, so I've been doing those. Maybe I'll try it just on it's own.

I thought that was just to provide a wireless connection to my laptop, not a connection to Sprint. I'll have to look into it some more.

Yeah, that's where I'm at right now. I did another hard reset after the many attempts I tried yesterday. So the phone is sitting at the factory load right now, with minor stuff like contacts loaded, regedit installed, etc.

I called Sprint support and the tech told me that as of Feb, they no longer allow tethering on the new phones. So I wonder if there's something deeper at work here in the ROM that nobody has ferreted out yet.

they no longer offer 'PAM'/Phone as Modem plans.. meaning theres no way for us to pay for tethering even if we wanted to... but trust me, boy can we still tether lol.. i used 14GBs on one line and 16GBs on another, and about 3.5GBs on my main line.. no charges, no charges, no charges... Ever.. so yeah.. we cant pay for it, but we can still do it

Okay, I did the install of just the cab you linked in above after a hard reset. Same, same. The error message is:
Error Code 67 Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.

I'm using blanks for id and pw, like I always have for tethering.

Any other suggestions?

And thanks for letting me know you do have it running on the current ROM. But it makes me scratch my head even more about it.

be careful with the older versions of wmwifirouter. It killed my internet connection forcing hard resets with my phone on the stock 6.1 sprint.
but I heard the paid newer version doesn't do this so if you get your tethering working, it might be worth it to you.
not to add to your frustration, but I just tethered last week (4g usb stick wasn't getting signal). had no problems. started ics, waited for it to say usb disconnected, connected, instant access. i'm using a personal build ROM though that might have older software that works.

I've been using the stock program on Win 6.5 no edits or anything, but i'm curious what everyone else's top dl speed is. I'm getting about 75 kb/s. Is there anyway to increase the speed? and are the reg edits really necessary?

i've never needed to enter a user name or password when I tether. i always just opened ics, waited for it to say usb connection failed, then connect. that's all.
under settings/connections go to manage existing connections and what do you have?
for modem, the only one I have is sprint with #777 out beside it.
then under advanced, I have sprint as the autoconnect network and My work network for the private network.

Just installed the ICS WModem Cab, did the soft reset and it connected within a minute using usb. and getting 10mbps... not sure if that is any good compared to any of you alls.

Bust out your plastic and get WMWiFiRouter, works great and you pay $23 only once. I have used it since my Mogul days and 12 phones later it still works flawlessly with status/speed info and only takes 2 min to load with 2 cabs(program and license cab). Updates are included. I dont know why people keep wanting to deal with the hastles of setting up a "free teathering app" when a one time $23 charge can cure it period. They have a 30 try before you buy, two clicks you got a hotspot via usb/bluetooth/wifi. The time you took to read this reply you could have been done already. :thumbright:

I would try either the new Mr X. rom or the New Mighty Rom. Mike spent almost 4 days playing with the new sprint ROM, because they did add something to the stock that will reset the settings to prevent tethering. Mike did find a solution and it is cooked into his new ROM. There are tons af people that use his rom (myself included) that tether and have not had any problems. I mentioned Mr. X's Rom because him and Mighty work together on a lot of stuff so the new Mr. X should have the new tethering fix also. There is also a cab in the sticky for mods/cabs (cant remember the exact name sorry) that Mighty Mike put together that will help. But I WOULD definately check out the New Mighty Rom.

Thanks. I guess I should try their trial version, but I don't think that's the solution I'm looking for. I already am able to turn my TP2 into a wireless hotspot with some of the free programs I've found here. The problem is a wireless hotspot/router to a device that doesn't have a connection to the internet is not much good. Part of the requirements for WMWifeRouter is: "An installed and working version of Internet Sharing". Mine is not working to get connected, which is my base problem.

have you tried to flash your phone back to stock 6.1? that might solve your problems.

Well, I would give it a shot, but the issue sounds like a bad flash. I am running a stock sprint 6.5 and it works fine, and any other Rom I have used has worked with no issues.

I had the same problem. I use this as the app. It looks like the other internet sharing icon but has a second drop down box.

first box (pc connection) should be set to usb
second box (network connection) needs to be changed from phone as modem to "sprint"

I accidently changed my password playing with it and got the error 67.

I called sprint and told them what I was doing and they said they dont allow using the phone as a modem.

I didn't know I couldn't untill they told me. I asked to be transfered to tech support. I told tech support i couldn't log onto the internet from the phone.

The user name and password is from sprint

Tech support had me dial ##3282#

That took me to another page where they gave me a code to unlock the page

They reset the username and password for me on their end.

it was like my name then 12345609@sprintpcs.com
the password was random too

I did a hard reset and installed the internet sharing app again and viola.. works perfect.

Don't tell them you are using it as a modem... just say you cant get onto the internet from the phone. Have them reset the username and password for vision.

Also, make sure your wifi is turned OFF on your computer

Man, this is frustrating. I've been trying to install some of the other ROM's, but my XP Thinkpad and our Win7 laptop both have fits about the hard SPL unlock programs. They come up as viruses, trojan horses, etc. Just one thing after another. I'm going to try another hard reset and try Boo Boo's method one more time with a twist of trying to have a data connection already open before starting the IS app. If that doesn't work, it's back to trying to get the phone unlocked so I can load a ROM. :banghead:

Finally got it working. The plan in my last post worked. I just have to remember to get a data connection open before kicking off Internet Sharing and plugging the cable into the computer. I can do that by either going into comm manager and turning on Data Connection, or bringing up a website on a browser.

Thanks for everyones help. I appreciate it all the effort to help me resolve this. Now I can get on with customizing the other parts of the phone.

Hard reset, installed this cab. My choice of network is "<none>"

Sorry man, this cab doesn't work on new phones from Sprint now, so quit saying it's so great. maybe if you're upgrading from older ROM it's fine and maybe if I install downloaded ROM. But fact is that it's not working on from Sprint stock. I might try downloading the "stock ROM" and see it it'll take from that, but thought others with replacement phones that can't get it to work, go ahead and punt on Tattooed's cab. It's from the Diamond, so looks like it might be showing its age.

The registry edits require the quotes in "Sprint" to be there for mine to work ples start a internet connection first and goto "tools" icon for ICS.--RR
