Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

Hey all. So, I'm basically hopeless at putting on screen protectors. After a few months the thing is half-peeled off because it never set properly. It's annoying as hell.

Does this thing really need one? My iPod Touch has no screen protector and I've no visible scratches on the screen. How scratch-resistant is the TP2? Has anyone used it without a protector and been all right? Or will I end up with an unusable phone in a few hours?

Thanks everyone.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

It will get scratches from everyday (not heavy) use. Fine and barely noticeable scratches, but it does scratch if you use your stylus at all. It's not that resistant against keys or other objects in a pocket either.

Agree with the scratches. Yes do try again with the screen protector.

+1 on the screen protector. Try amazon, they sell some good ones from about $0.01-$0.04, plus the $2.98 shipping.

all i can say is... the day i got my touchpro 2 i had the sales rep put the protector on for me.. and i took it home and used my stylus and was messing around on it and i guess there was something hard stuck to my stylus cuz when i dragged it across it made a huge scratch on my screen protector.. if i didn't have it that screen protec....well... you get the idea..

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

Your iPod has a glass screen which is harder to scratch. The surface of the TP2 screen is a very soft plastic and it will scratch, guaranteed. I found the easiest protectors to put on are the GhostArmor/Zagg types, and they are really friggin durable.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

what you need to do is wipe the screen and make sure there isn't one spec of dust.. then put it on as quickly but carefully as you can so no dust slips in between.

Get the rubbery skin ones, they are less likely to peel off

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

I am going to present the opposing view. I use a belt holster, so never put my phone in a pocket with keys. On the other hand, I am in construction, so the phone does get banged around some, has fallen a few times, etc. I never bothered with putting the protector on, but I'm also not the type who agonizes over dings and scratched, and micro-examines my possesions for dings or scratches. Life is too short. I've had thie TP2 since Sept., btw, and no replacements

I have had my Seidio screen protector on since november and love it.
It went on easier and better than any other one iv used and I like the hard slick feel versus the sticky rubbery feel of Zagg and Ghost Armor.
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/spm1htp2s.htm

And they're much cheaper than those other ones.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

From the day I took it out of the box I have never put a screen protector on my TP2. It only has minors barely-noticable scratches. I always assign it a pocket in which I make sure it is the only item. As for keys I use a clip to carry those I never put keys in my pocket. Maybe it also helps that I never use the stylus (I lost it a while back and never bothered replacing it as I always use 6.5.5 roms which are indeed finger friendly).

I'm not that type either, but I like to keep the phone in top condition for one reason: selling value. I always get top dollar for my phones I sell on eBay because I keep them in great condition, and that allows me to get my next toy a lot easier. :)

ive got a few and they are pretty nice. these are the first aftermarket protectors ive ever used and im very satisfied with them and for the price, you cant beat it. you can afford to mess up a few if necessary lol

I had a boxwave clear touch crystal that was nice until it started pealing at the points by the send and end hard keys. Took it off and did not replace it and probably won't. I carry it in a VZW belt clip and use the stylus a lot and don't see any noticeable scratches. Either that, or they're small enough that it doesn't bother me.

just my $0.02

Yeah,I didnt like ZAGG's rubbery screen protector,But I do like his back cover protector

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

I dont like Zagg's screen protector cause of the rubbery feel... but it did protect it from a dog trying to eat my Touch diamond lol.

I just recently bought some screen protectors from ATT&T... they were like 3 for $10 so far its ok. Just like the ones you get from stock.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

I would recommend one. Like others have said, use extra caution when using the stylus on screen without a screen protector. If there is one speck of dust on the screen or the tip of the stylus and you move the stylus across the screen, BAM! You have a nice scratch on the screen of your $500 device. Not a fun experience.

If you ever lose sense of responsiveness of the screen, I would advise taking the screen protector off. I had this issue and took the protector off and had rainbow banding underneath. Not a fun experience either.

i love no screen protector. had mine since sept. i'm sure you can find a few tiny scratches, if you micro examined it. but i don't notice any. i keep it in my pocket. always just the only thing in that pocket. rarely use a stylus. it feels way better to the touch without a condom on the front of it. go for it! live recklessly with no protection

What has scratched it up that much?

I had the TP1 for a year, no screen protector, not a scratch on it. But the screen on the TP2 doesn't feel the same so I put on the screen protector and keep it on.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful.

I don't use the stylus at all, but I often stick the phone in my pocket with other items. Guess I'll need to consider whether or not I'm going to resell it.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

Yeah the screen is so soft it will scratch from just the stylus, was the same way with my diamond.

Before that I never used protectors and never had problems on 6700 6800 or touch but day number 1 with my Diamond I had stylus scratches wtf, the thing they give you to use on your screen scratches it..once again wtf???

The screens of those previous phones weren't as bright and so the protectors were very noticeable to me, the TP2 is so bright I can't tell I have one on, others can't tell either.

I like the stock one that came with it best, least noticeable and can't feel it with the stylus either, you can get ones just like the sprint stock ones at any ATT store 3 for $10, the are the ones for the ATT gsmTP2 (tilt 2, I think, may be wrong)

But from someone who used to hate to use them, on the TP2 it's a must.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

try Steinheil SGP . Easiest to put on. I have had same protector on my phone for months no peeling. I personally use the matte finish with antifingerprint , but that's my choice. You may want the clear crystal look. Either way, these protectors are awesome, fit well, and they go on without having to do all the steam tricks and water and dish liquid tricks, Very easy. here's a link http://www.sgpstore.com/index.php/cPath/21_33

these protectors are not that expensive9mid range ) and out of about 5 different ones I tried, they are by far the easiest and best. I am sure if you search on here you will find lots of folks recommend them

I'll keep these in mind. I recently bought the ATT Tilt2 screen protectors for my Sprint TP2 and am extremely pleased. I can hardly tell there's a protector on it. It was very easy to apply, but may I was just lucky this time. I'll use the next 2 in the pack as needed, but after that, I might try the ones you suggest--perhaps the ones that claim to show fewer fingerprints.

just remember as I said earlier the antifingerprint has a matte finish which obviously is not the same as the crystal clear finish ( that is also available) they are both great protectors, so it really just comes down to a preference. I prefer not to have to wipe fingerprints off after every use. Also , one note, many of the screen protectors for the TP2 are cut exactly to the very edge of the screen. You would think this is good , but in reality when you put it on they sometimes come right to the very edge of the screen and will eventually get caught on something and try to peel up. after that they are useless. I had this happen a few times with other protectors after having placed them on perfectly . It was very irritating . I found out that by using this sweet little case http://cgi.ebay.com/Soft-Skin-Silico...item19b98cc3e8

there is no problem. BTW, this is by far the best fitting case I and many others have found out there, Takes 2 weeks from China or a few days from Boxwave (for a few more bucks)
I have had mine for many months along with the same screen protector and my phone looks 100 percent new .

well dude my friend dropped his TP2 and it slid down his driveway and let's just say it looks like he tried taking 80 grit sandpaper and giving his phones screen some prep work for a paintjob hahaha... Stock Screen Protector FTW..!!

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

I suggest the zagg Invisishield...dunno why peeps are giving it a bad rap...sure when you first put it on the screen feels a bit sticky and unusual but with a little use and some sweat an it gets broken in...I personally love it...plus lifetime warranty incase it ever peels or wares...can't beat that...

And as an added note...my friend had a tp2 with the zagg shield on it...after frying the screen with a blow torch he decided to try using his keys to scratch the screen as the videos show...it left a mark on the shield but once whipped with a cloth it looked as if nothing happened...

I prefer quality over quantity...and I am not a nit picker with scratches and what not I just figured a $300 investment deserved a $25 piece of protection...just my opinion...

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

i am decending from the majority. i don't tend to hold on to phones for that long. why? there's always going to be newer, better, awesomer phones. mogul<touch pro<touch pro2<hd2<evo 4g.

but that's just me. i like mine bareback, using protecting looses some of that feeling.

btw...i was still talking about phones...just in case some of you pervs were getting the wrong ideas...

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

Imho, screen protectors are a must...I resell my phones after I get a new one so keeping it looking good helps. I'd recommend you don't skimp out on a deal thats way too good to be true because you'll probably get a POS...

Lastly, to install the screen protectors without air bubbles and have no chance of attaching it wrong, get a bit of soapy water in a small bowel and just get your hands and the protector wet. It will be really loose so you can move it into position. The bubbles will come out easily and it will look awesome. Don't get too impatient with it not sticking right away...it has soapy water under it, duh! lol

Hope this helps, I don't know if someone already posted this but I looked at the OP's post and thought it might help.

also, a few good months (5-7) out of a $2-$5 protector sounds about right to me.

Re: Does the TP2 really need a screen protector?

So after having the Invisible Shield on my XV6700 and Mogul and being pretty satisfied with it, I decided to get it for the Touch Pro 2. I noticed that the gummy texture of it interfered a bit with the finger swipes - something that didn't come up on the previous phones because I was primarily using the stylus. But it was definitely a bit harder to scroll left and right in Manila, and using Cookie's Home Tab, I would always accidentally open an app when I was just trying to swipe up to view the second page of icons. Plus, the edges of the IS accumulated lint and dust, and the whole thing generally got really annoying.

After reading through this thread I decided to go with the Steinheil SGP Anti-Fingerprint, and I am a LOT happier with it. The install is a total no-brainer especially compared with the Invisible Shield, and it's just so much easier to use the phone with the smoother texture. The Anti-Fingerprint does cut down on the phone visibility a tad, so I am considering getting the SGP Crystal and trying that out. Another nice thing about SGP is they come in packs of two, so if I get the Crystal and don't like it, it won't cost me any more money to go back to the Anti-Fingerprint.
