GPS on TP2 compared to TP
Was thinking about upgrading from TP,but was just wondering if the GPS problems on TP also carried over to TP2.
Those of you that previouslyown TP know the GPS problemsI am talking about (primarily the reported position lagged behind the actual position by several dozen yards as well as slow updating of position and losing satellite lock). MuCh appreciate any comment on this issue. I am tempted to just get one to try and probably end up returning it since I have a feeling that all the GPS issues in TP probably carry over since the Qualcomm chip is the same. Looks to me also like TP2 is just like a TP with bigger screen |
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
I run IGO and Ndrive oN my TP2 with barely any lag (1-2 SEC), and that is the same with my original TP...I am aware of GPS prob, but never had any terrible lag...And let me ae assure you man, the difference between the TP AND TP2 is huge...looking back at the Mogul (QVGA) , the screen was awful, and looking back at the TP now, that thang doesnt look as sharp as it first was....you will be pleasantly surprised..

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
Yea I use TomTom and it was unusable on this device until I got the fixed version of TomTom from Strra. now I get about a 2 second lag and its not bad at all. You will be happy with a TP2 because it seems to be everything the TP wasnt. Still runnin my original TP2 from sept and no problems yet!

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
there are many a way to fix the gps lagging problem. with that said, and please dont flame me for it, but, dont buy a tp2 now. 8 months ago was a good time, but now, the only good deal on a tp2 would be a free one. it is the last of the old era of ppc. im not gonna get in to phone comparisons, but everything coming out right now or scheduled to come out have waayyyy more badass specs.better processors, more rom and ram. tighter screens that are amoled and capacitive. getting in tio a 2 year contract now on the almost year old tp2 is not the way to go.

I like more powerful cpu, more ram better screen, etc, but not at the cost of losing flexibility and what I can do with my phone |
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
Yep, GPS is still the same as old TP. Still not as good as a stand alone GPS, but pretty handy. Still off by a few seconds while driving full speed. But, it is pretty accurate.

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
The GPS function on my TP did not lag at all; it does on my TP2.

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
I never had issues or lag with my touch pro or now with my touch pro 2 (Sprint). I use tomtom v7.
|
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
how are you using tomtom v7 on tp2 from sprint? how did you get the maps to work?

Also, has anyone tried using the GPS ModDriver? I installed it, but I can't seem to configure the GPS to use COM3 instead of COM4. Thanks. |
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
To get GPS to work using Google Maps I have to start it and restart it once Ive picked a route. This is on my TP2
I never had any lag whatsoever on my TP1 |
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
Way better on the TP2. Locks in on the location almost instantly. On the TP1 I had some long waits.
Don't know what's wrong with some of these other TP2s, but the GPS is completely fixed. The bigger screen and keyboard are nice as well. |
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
My TP2 seems to do just fine with a normal install of iGuidance 2009. No GPS priming like I had to do with the old Mogul. If there's lag when I'm on the road, I really can't tell. It hasn't ever affected me getting where I need to go.

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
I run Garmin XT and it works like a charm with traffic and what not. Lock time is instant, as soon as I launch and go through the accept terms thing, it's all set to go. I have not really noticed any lag between where I am and where it says I am. Sometimes it thinks I get there before I do, but I imagine it is due to GPS locks.

tried the new bing today on the way home. seems to work very well.

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
I have no gps lag. Maybe because I turn off the agps. If I keep the agps on I get a 1 to 2 lag. Try turning off the agps and see if that works on your touch pro. There are better phone than the touch pro 2 on the horizon so you might just want to wait.

You do not need to do anything at all once you install GPSModDriver. I know it pops up that it installed on COM3 blah blah blah, but that's all meaningless. No GPS settings need to be changed. 1)Open GPSModDriver 2)Open TomTom 3)Go to GPS Status in TomTom (CHANGE PREFERENCES -> (preferences 6/6) SHOW GPS STATUS), choose CONFIGURE, select OTHER NMEA GPS RECEIVER, leave baud at default, and then on the GPS IS CONNECTED TO screen, select GpsModDriver and finally, click DONE. Everything should work great now. I can't even notice any lag! Just make sure to first open GPSModDriver first, everytime you want to use TomTom, and close it after you are done. Once again, that's all you have to change. THERE ARE NO OTHER SETTING CHANGES NEEDED TO BE MADE! |

Yes, better phones are here, TP2 is outdated, but right now it is the best sprint WM phone you can use.w/ SERO. |
Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
Just want to give everyone an update on GPS between TP1 and TP2 by my experience. If everyone else has something else to add, please do. I believe that this is an important part of TP2 and TP1 since both these devices' GPS are an important part of the phones and deserving a fair amount of attention.
My new TP2 GPS is day and night better than my old TP1 GPS. Whether because this is due to TP2 built date of April 2010 (relatively late model even for TP2 since TP2 was introduced at least 6 months ago) as compared to my TP1 built date of Nov 08 (early built right when TP1 was introduced) is hard to say since I don't have a real early model TP2 or a late model TP1 to confirm, but it's very possible that a hardware bug is at work in my TP1 and possibly also other people with problem with their TP2. Having said the above, my TP2 GPS works great even without any assistance from quickgps or cell tower. It got at least 6-7 sat locked just standing next to the window. Moving back more to the middle of my room about 10 ft from window it still maintains steady lock on at least 6 sats. And I mean rock steady sat locks. This is better than my Mio C320 I actually downgraded my TP2 to 6.1 ROM to test something else. While at it, before going back to 6.5 rom, I tested the GPS and it was also working, possibly slightly slower at getting sat signals but it did lock on to at least 5-6 sat within 5 mins. I did notice that the GPS driver files in WM 6.1 for TP2 is of different size compared to that of 6.5 rom. So there could be some possible small improvement of GPS between 6.1 and 6.5 rom? Regardless, even with 6.1 rom, GPS on my TP2 is definitely very good. This would tend to rule out the fact that the GPS improvement is mostly due to the software. In another word, if someone has a TP2 and their GPS is crappy even with quickgps and cell signal, be real suspicious that you could have a broken GPS if you already try to restore rom back. I had a TP1 which I got like when it first came out back in Nov 08. It has a real POS GPS which doesn't have enough sensitivity to lock on to anything even outside most of the time and even quickgps doesn't help a lot of time. Even when the quickgps data was uptodate and with tower signals, it still keeps losing sat lock on and off causing the indicated position to jitter on and off every other second nonstop. I think a lot of people got this problem too. I have a feeling that it could have been the GPS chip on my TP1 was bad (possibly due to early built). Possibly later TP1 GPS is fixed? It would be nice if someone with later built of TP1 or anyone with TP1 w/ GPS working real nicely can comment? Also I did notice that the GPS driver files on my TP1 is different size compared to GPS drivers on TP2 even when I downgrade my TP2 rom to 6.1. I guess I could try to see if i can transfer the same driver files from TP2 over to the old TP1 to see if it makes any difference, but I doubt it. I guess the other possibility is that the GPS chip in TP2 is completely different from TP1. I thought that they might be the same since both of these have very similar HW. Would be good if someone knows more than me about this can confirm or not that TP2 and TP1 use the same GPS chip. |

Re: GPS on TP2 compared to TP
A-GPS works on google maps with TP2, Not with TP. I think that says alot.

This unassisted mode is good if you are in a foreign country and have no data connection or doesn't want to use one. All those people with all these phones claiming to have GPS (which a lot are just only A-GPS only) don't know what they are missing.... |
