Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

Considering flashing the new Sprint ROM but I have my 6.1 version working exactly like I wanted and no complaints right now.

Been overwhelmed with posts here about it, what works, what doesn't, what may or may not be a bug, etc.

For those of you that have done the ROM upgrade from Sprint, would you do it again?

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

Nope not a chance... battery life dropped from 48 hours (with HTC's own extended battery) to less than 4 hours on average... sadly mine was working great with 6.1 other than a couple of very minor nits... wished I hadn't updated it...

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

The update is definitely worth it. You get HTC sense, which is a better version of TF3D, or if you like a basic layout, they added the "windows default" home screen, for people who don't need all the foo foo and eye candy. The only feature that might not go over too well, is the honeycomb start menu, but it's easy to replace. BTW, battery life is fine.

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

NO. Actually trying flash the original ROM that I had on my TP2 with pocket express and all - but can't find it exaclty like it was on stock.

My Screen froze when it was hidden, if I went to an "about" tab you couldn't close it out because the red X has been removed from the right corner. Might look at using some of the tweaked ROMs, but the original 6.5 I was pulling off my phone within 24 hours.

Just saying

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

I'm not sure where users are seeing this battery drain issue. I've been running the ROM since it released and have yet to see an issue with battery life. Personally for me, battery life is the same or has improved just a bit. If you are burning through an extended battery in 4 hours, you got other problems then the ROM!

demonlordoftheround 03-22-2010 05:15 PM

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

I don't have any of the problems others are reporting. Battery life is good. Seems like alot of people don't do a hard reset after flashing, or they are adding some cabs for 6.1 that are messing things up.

Edwood 03-22-2010 05:17 PM

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

Battery life would depend greatly on how good your service signal is. I have pretty poor service where I live, living on the fringe of EVDO as well. With the stock 6.1 on the Touch Pro I had terrible battery life. With the Touch Pro 2 in the exact same conditions, I get much much MUCH better battery life with the stock 6.1.

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

Battery life should be within 1% or so of 6.1. If it's significantly different. You need to do a hard reset and figure out what's causing it.

It's Windows people. The O/S won't change your battery life by 90%. LOL

mlin 03-22-2010 05:21 PM

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

Seems my signal is much better with the new radio and thus battery life has improved. I would flash again if only for the new radio. I will not be using this ROM too much longer though because I greatly prefer WM 6.5.5 to WM 6.5.

Anyhow, is it possible to downgrade the radio? If you flash and don't like it, can't you always go back pretty easily? I say try it, if you don't like, revert back.

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

i am using spb mobile shell, so i am not using tf3d at all and thus native windows messaging and other features that tf3d seems to have made difficult or more resource intensive.

i have not really had any signal issues like i was with my treo 755p in the same location, nor is my battery life too bad. I can easily pull a full work day out of a single charge with BT, Wifi, data connection, push outlook email and syncing 5 other imap accounts every 30 minutes.

i hear good things about WM6.5 but dont want compatibility issues with the cabs I do use regularly. I know I can verify, but its the principle (and PITA) or it.

There is a stock Sprint ROM that I can flash back I suppose, but then I need to figure out the RUU and stuff like that to get it installed. Not worth the hassle for me right now.

Ain't broke, don't fix it... which is hard for me since I am a tinkerer

mjcole2003 03-22-2010 05:49 PM

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

I installed the stock 6.5 and used it for about 45 minutes before going back to my custom Mr.X rom. I just found myself liking my custom rom over this stock... Shoot, i cant even remember what i didnt like about it( i was pretty toasted at the time lol).

mlin 03-22-2010 05:50 PM

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

What is there to figure out with the RUU?

It sounds like you have your device set up just the way you like it. If you do decide to flash, I would back up everything first using SPB Backup or Sprite so that if you flash back you can pick up right where you left off...

Also, so far I haven't had any issues with programs not working with WM 6.5 but have had a few issues with WM 6.5.5

Realize that most of us here are hackers who think nothing of flashing our phones several times a day or week (I do). It's a hobby for us. Most of us will say "of course do it!".

You sound like a person who wants a smartphone and has it currently setup the way you like it. Unless there is something compelling you've read about 6.5, I wouldn't recommend you change just to change.

But, don't read too much into all the complaints about the new upgrade - Sprint did a nice job. If you're willing to invest the time to set 6.5 up the way you like it, don't hesitate. Sprint gave us a nice upgrade. It'll feel like a new phone to you (if that matters to you).

You would think so, but I was getting two full days out of my extended battery (genuine HTC) right up through Thursday night... Typically I would charge every other day and still have 10 to 20% left on the battery when I plugged it in and that was pretty heavy use (I burn through about 2500 min a month on average but mostly during weekdays for work).

Friday afternoon I loaded up the 6.5 update and then after it completed did a hard reset (per someone else's suggestion). Battery drain was immediate and quite evident and the phone remained hot (not warm) to the touch. Let the battery drain until it shut the phone off, removed the battery and let it all cool. Put the battery in and charged overnight to 100%, unplugged from the charger at 8:40 am on Saturday... No phone calls and received 3 text messages and phone was dead and off by 1:30 (with the extended battery). Put the original battery in, full charge and dead within 2 hours. In both cases the phone remained extremely hot (very similar to the issues with the original Touch Pro) and prior to the update the phone would get lukewarm during a call but otherwise was not warm at all.

It started immediately after the update the day before it worked fine..

I would definitely do the upgrade to 6.5 again. I love the new interface and except for a few minor issues was back running at 100% right after I did a restore with my SPB backup. My battery life is also fine.

I would do it again. I was able to add the GF Round Taskbar, HTC Wi fi Router, etc and it seems fine. My battery seems fine if not better to me. The only thing bugging me is that it tends to flip to landscape more than cooked roms. I think there may have been a cab for that... but yes i would do it again. its the best rom i've seen from a manufacturer.

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

Yes, I dont mind it frankly. for those having battery issues, there are a couple things to consider. You may want to turn off automatic weather downloads every hour. I update once in a while but really it's pointless to have auto updates. Secondly, turn of weather animations, settings tab>personalize>Home tab wallpaper>animated wallpaper>albums, pick another one on your storage or in my device. Third, if you set up twitter, once again, turn off auto downloads every hour, just do it manually. Four, install hd tweak and enable battery saving (#18 ) or find a good battery saving cab. Five, email setup especially exchange email, set up for sync to manual or a longer duration than push. Honestly, if you are at work, why have it come through on your ppc immediately if you sitting in front of your laptop/PC? Six, if you charge your phone and its says fully charged, unplug it and charge it again for another 15 minutes or so until it goes green again. You will get much better battery life. May sound strange but believe me it works. Been off the charger since 8am today, still at 70% using battery monitor so its accurate. Each of us will have different results of course.

Granted the new shipped in not ideal, but it works well for me and will of course be better once our chefs use it as a base and modify it a good bit.

Just comparing to 6.1? Oh yea it is worth it!

Compared to Custom ROM? Probably not!

I would do it again even though I immediately disabled sense in favor of SPB Mobileshell 3. Menus are still more finger friendly which was the biggest factor.

Sorry for the noob questions..but...

I am wondering the same.

I am curently on 6.1 + GTTL cleanup + SPB shell 3.5 .

I like the SPB shell 3.5.

If I am ultimately going to use SPB shell 3.5., is there any point to update to 6.5.

Thanks

I would do it again!

I really like this ROM and my battery is perfectly fine.

I have One minor hitch.. i would love to find a way to kill the splash screen when Opera loads, it is so annoying and slow.. but, after that, opera flies...

It s just annoying :)

I agree, It makes the phone seem new again with all the enhancements they added. Its a worth while upgrade, just make sure to hard reset after you install, to cut down on glitches.

Is hard-resetting via "clear storage" sufficient?

It has some functionality improvements over stock 6.1. Opera is faster during use but slower to load. X button next to address bar is gone so closing pages is not as easy but do-able.
BLUETOOTH IS MUCH IMPROVED! at least for me with my Plantronics Discovery 925. It stops the conversation when you hit the button now. Voice command announces through the phone instead of the headset even though I have it set to only announce through the headset but hey its Windows. There's always something that doesn't work the way you think it should! ](*,)
I had a lot of custom stuff on 6.1 home screen, chrome task bar icons, clock etc. that are gone but I give the guys on this site a few days and I'm sure I'll find a theme I can live with. I do miss my Harley background on the home screen though.....

Im sorry for the noob question, but I am ignorant when it comes to these things.... Where do I get 6.5 from and what do I do? Is there a direct thread that tells me what to do? well i just upgraded to 6.5 ... as there may be bugs it is what it is. my 6.1 stock rom had its issues but now its like having a whole new device 2 familiarize myself with & that much has me excited .. i just deleted a sh!tload of cabs off my card i know only worked with 6.1 like taskbars & such & am looking forward to using this device all over again as i was pretty bored with 6.1

Funny you should say that. I have the exact opposite experience (Sprint TP2.) I can no longer simultaneously utilize the Stereo Audio and Headset features of Bluetooth in my 2010 Mazda 3, as opposed to the 6.1 rom. I am forced to enable one or the other, and they frequently fail to pair.

I can't find any cab that fixes this problem, so unless you guys know of one, I'm taking it to the store to see if I can get it flashed back to 6.1 (unless you can download the old 6.1 flasher from HTC).

I specifically want to be able to listen to music through Windows Media Player and use my car's controls to make/receive calls (which auto-pauses media player), and then when the call is done, the music starts up again. I used to be able to do all that with Sprint Navigation running in the background as well. Now, all I have is a lot of eye candy and less functionality from my standpoint.

I installed 6.5 when I got my phone from asurion. I also unlocked radio and installed new radio. I am getting about 2 1/2 days on a charge. I may later do a custom rom, I did on TP. Only thing I do not like is my Z9 earpiece will not annouce incoming calls only a ringer in ear. It did work right in TP.

Re: Sprint WM6.5 upgrade: Would you do it again?

I've switched back to 6.1. I love 6.5, but I actually use my TP2 as a personal and business phone and when you load sense down with a lot of contacts it simply can't handle it and freezes when receiving text messages. It doesn't freeze to the point where you have to do a soft reset, but it does take up to 45 seconds to back out of the text message. Three are reports of this all over the place, and the people that are freezing seem to have a lot of contacts as well. If you only have 20-30 contacts I would say do it, If you are a power user I would say don't do it. Just my two cents.
