Just because I'm curious--Turn Off/On vs Soft Reset

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is just a stupid question becuse I'm a curious person.

Becaues of the work I do, I can't take my phone into the office so I will usually "Turn Off" my phone and leave it in my car for 8 to 10 hours and sometimes even over night. I turn it off to save the battery. When I get back into my car, I turn the phone back on, it boots up like you'd expect and works like you'd expect; although, I've noticed it usually seems a bit sluggish--a little slower than usual.

When I do a soft reset of my phone, either through software or by inserting the stylis into the hole under the battery cover, the sluggishness (if that's a word) seems to go away and the phone performs just a little better--a little faster.

So, here are my questions:

1) Is this really happening or am I imagining things?

2) If it really is happening, then why? Wouldn't a turn off/on have the same effect as a soft reset?

3) How much battery am I really saving my turning my phone off when I'm at work. Would it be just as good to turn the radio off so the phone doesn't receive calls or texts?

Again, this isn't a serious problem, I'm just curious by nature.

Thanks in advance to all you experts. You've helped me many, many times to customize and understand my phone.

After a soft reset everything resets so any programs that were hogging ram shut off. So in most cases it will be faster after a soft reset.

i thought that is was the same...@ poster above, wouldnt that be the same as turning phone off/on, the programs get reset too, correct?

Those programs don't shut down by powering the phone off then back on?

A soft reset and turning the phone off then on are the same thing, you should get the same result.

honestly i dont have a 100% straight answer but to me that is common sense, that it reacts the same way as in it shuts down all programs an such just as a reset would

you made it a bit confusing w/ your posts...1st you said it would be better/faster w/ a soft reset but op is asking if its different between a soft reset an power off/on. but i see you cleared it up...

I didnt understand what the op was asking at first.

I think what happens when you turn on and off. It resets your connection so the phone tries to connect to towers and etc. On a soft reset the phone never really turned off just flushed its ram. Similar to difference between taking out the battery and putting it back in.

This is a guess of course but makes sense.

there the same thing...the soft reset just is faster...its exactly like restarting your computer as compared to shutting it down and then turning it back on...if the phones running faster after a soft reset than a power off and back on its just in your imagination...

"soft reset" "shut down turn on" "battery out in power up" are all the same. Also a faster way to soft reset is turning the radio off and back on. same thing. that is why on android when u update the prl the radio disables and enables. you would most likely conserve the same amount of battery in airplane mode (radio off) as powering down. on standby the phone uses hardly any power at all. kind of like asking...does my car use more gas turning off and then on or leaving it running for a minute while you run in someplace. *Not saying to leave your vehicles unattended and am not responsible for GTA* just an example.

yea, but turning the radio off and on doesnt do anything to running programs. a batt pull or soft reset will kill programs, thus the phone running smoother/faster. after a radio "soft reset" the phone will act like you had it in airplane mode.

and to the OP, no offense, but why have a phone if you always leave it in your car?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Just for clarification, when I meant I turn the phone off, I don't mean just the radio. I mean, using the power button on the top, left hand side of the phone, so it's completely off. No phone, no calendar, no power.

And, finally, for Piranah. Trust me, I wish I could bring my phone into work. I have it becuase I love it and I'm an overly organized individual. Unfortunately, because of my work, I can't bring it.

It seems like the general concensus is that I'm just imagining that the phone runs faster after a soft reset.

wow, couldn't imagine a job these days where phones are off limits, i would be worried about leaving a phone in a hot car all day. eventually i think it would damage it (at least where i live).

when you turn the phone off properly, it will boot up 'normal'. but via reset or battery, the phone was turned off 'unexpectely' so during boot, the registry will get defragmented, ect...

try ronen's cleanram
