Re: Data Plan Required

Wow, this was a long and drawn-out thread for this discussion to be brought up:

With Verizon (and possibly ATT & TMobile), no choice with windows phones & other truly advanced phones that can take special apps, must pay extra for data. To get around this, must go to another carrier.

No, some people can't just take a regular phone, or an EnV or whatever, because they WILL NOT do all that a phone like the Touch Pro or Touch Pro2 will do WITHOUT the data plan.

Does it suck? Yes, it does. Should it be different? Yes, it should. We should be able to pay what they want us to pay for a phone based on what plan we want. Perhaps they could subsidize more if we choose data plan, but not make us not be able to use the phone they sell on their voice network only.

It would benefit them to keep clients more than forcing the extra fees for something people don't want. I, and I'm sure many others, don't have an iPhone because we will not pay what ATT wants for the monthly service. I do have an iPod Touch though, and only use internet when at work or at home. ATT just lost money on me. I would rather only carry one device, so, if I could have had the iPhone without the data package, I would have done so.

This is extortion if you've paid for the phone full price, or done your part in the two-year contract fulfillment of that phone. It does benefit the company, but I do not believe that losing customers benefits them and cuts down on the benefits of forcing people to have these plans with these phones. (I think I said that already, oh well)

This is the reality of the matter. The OP is right to a degree and the people opposing this thread are right to a degree. I had to throw my two-cents in, but I do hope everyone moves on (not necessarily because of my post, you know).

You can get an iPhone and use it on T-Mobile without a data plan.

We are stuck with WM, but will WM7 follow the way of android and require the everything data plan as well?

Business phones will always be allowed on non-everything plans.

I believe you are wrong. Nothing makes windows more of a business phone then android or palm or iphone os. WP7 will surely require SEP.

Re: Data Plan Required

that is NOT actually true... I had a data plan on my account, and the system dropped it off my plan. I ended up with $75.00 in data overage....which was corrected. I don't see the point in the phone without a data plan...but the phone WILL activate without one.

you're correct with sprint you can have the tp2 on whatever plan you want, with or without data. Just to get the MIR you have to have data for the 1st 30 days or so.

Alright; that is good news for me! So aparently the hypothetical I presented didn't even apply for Sprint users. Thanks for the correction.

Ah, yes, that is true. Of course, you'd have to jailbreak it first. No big deal since there probably wouldn't be a warranty on a used phone. Anyway, that's a different discussion. But, I'll have to remember that in case the iPhone ever looks more enticing than my winmo phone.

Thanks for the reminder!

The Exchange and heavy Enterprise support makes Windows Mobile a business platform. Hense why MS is keeping WM 6 on the market even after 7...

WP7 will probably need a data plan as it is a consumer targeted device. It is NOT aimed at business.

Android and Palm are also consumer smartphone OSes. The Onlytwo left in the business arena is RIM (Blackberry) and Microsoft (WinMo). MS is started to drift and is leaving it to RIM it looks like. Android is slowly trying to get into the business market, but it simply hasn't gotten there yet.
