After seeing the demo I can clearly see why its Windows Phone, because its a dumbphone OS and not an actual OS. There are plenty competition in the dumbphone OS market, iPhone, Bada, Instinct OS(forgot its name), LG OS, and etc...

Also I repeat..just by putting "Windows" in the name, people will think its a Pocket PC phone and avoid it for those that don't want pocket pcs and those that try it thinking its a pocket pc will be disappointed.

It is the smartphone OS that makes it stand out which windows mobile was in and now looks like Android will end up ruling.

As for the argument before about the pocket pcs being laggy and breaking...the fault lies in the crappy hardware and optimizations. You have to understand, phones loaded with windows mobile used to be premium phones which high prices. The TP2 for example cost many of us 350$ which we dished out for a pocketpc. Lets reverse the thing, WP 7 will require high end hardware with a none pocketpc OS...would you dish out 350$ for something you can get on a free-$100 phone?

What an average user wants is usually a touch screen for 100$ or less which Microsoft won't be able to provide. They clearly given up the fight agaisnt android and went to fight the iPhone while Android is claiming both markets..slowly but steadily.

It is not about embracing change or denying it..we expect next version..when you get microsoft Excel your hoping for spreadsheets. If they change excel into a mapping tool, even if they call it Excel it is not. As stated before...it should not have Windows in its name..Windows = pocket pc in EVERYONES mind..I mean if I tell you windows, what would be your first reaction.

How is WP7 a dumbphone? What defines WM6.x from being a smartphone and WP7 being a dumbphone?

You are bashing WP7, and that is your right to voice your opinion, but I don't understand why. I can understand if you don't like the UI but what can't WP7 do that WM6.x do? The truth is, we don't have any details to call it a dumbphone.

It has to do with the interaction of the OS and the software on it. From what they showed and how they said that oems wont be able to customize the UI points toward dumb phone. Not to mention it sounded like they are gonna take the "app store" approach. Not to mention they clearly said its not a pocket pc...so if its not a pocket pc its a dumbphone..don't take "dumbphone" as a bashing..its just a slang term to refer to a phone thats not a "smartphone"

---------------------------------------------------------------

Reason they probably called it 7 rather then giving it a new name is probably to trick people into thinking its a new version that 7 and not a new OS altogether..like a lot of criticism for WebOS was that while many liked it, many felt uncertain because it had no version behind it. By claiming its 7.0 your showing "development".. some companies do same thing and skip version 1.0 and release 2.0 just not to show that the software is in its infancy.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Also you don't want windows XP on your phone, as XP is not made for such small screens making some things untouchable.

So is Blackberry a dumbphone because they dont allow UI customizations as well? Some people criticize phones by saying it is a dumbphone. That is why I thought you were bashing it.

I'm not trying to argue but the things they showed us of WP7 was basically a skim through. We have not even seen the phone aspects of it yet lol. Who is to say that we will not be able to unlock it and load apps on to the storage card?

I think the main reason we customized WM was because it had flaws. The average consumer has no idea how to do this. Microsoft saw this and wanted to appeal to the market share. When you really think about it, how much can you really customize in Android? There is not that much. People just want phones that work and work well out of the box.

I'm just trying to see your point. Instead of labeling OS as smartphones and dumbphones, why don't we just compare the features?
It seems like WM 6.x and WP7 will have very similar features. Internet seems to be better on 7.
Office suite is on both.
E-mail seems similar. From the sound of it, maybe easier to use on 7.

I think all we have seen is the UI and not the inner workings of WP7. So its too early to tell.

I'm still confused as to what you consider to be a smartphone OS. What about WM makes it one to you? Is it the only one out there in your eyes?

Woah... This got ugly...
Nothing's gonna change. Microsoft is headed in the direction that will best work for them and now we are left at a crossroad. What about that inspires people to figtht is beyond me.

Now now...I think we can all discuss what we think about WP7S without resorting to name calling...

I think that the people who are really disappointed in the changes are the folks who really want a PocketPC, not just a smart phone.

The thing is microsoft went with the PocketPC route and it was good but not as successful as the wanted it to be. You can't put a computer in your pocket just yet, or you can but it will be one slow, crashing, constantly restarting piece of hardware. So they put a spin on it and i just so happen to like what i see so far.

I think they also realized that most people don't want to have a full PC in their pocket. They want a subset of functionality that just works.

I wonder if people's reactions also have to do with their age and/or length of time using WM....

Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

i think we should all just have a big group hug...anyway i dont see how people dont like it unless they dont like the look of the main screen, because we really dont know anything about it as far as limitations & wont until mix so all this windows hates us & its a dumbed down version is whats really uncalled for

whats dumbed down?? & if its so dumbed down why cant most wm phones run it.. lack of multitasking? we dont know & from the looks of it the whole os looks like a big pot of multitask, only thing bad i can see is that you need to use the zune software to sync your music & vids besides that & the plain main screen, it freakin rocks..how can i not like it? no load icons/screens, zune added, & xbox live -that right there has me sold, if i have to give up true multitasking so the apps pause instead of keep playing so be it

I'm with you and we won't know everything for a while. Xbox... Zune... not a big selling point for me.
However they're goigng to have to partner with companies to bring a user interface that we actually want. I cleared out my mp3s from my phone and now use Wunder Radio and nanoGroove. I have all the music I need.
But... What about the power users? I guess that's what we're doing just guessing.
Someone should send a link to this thread to Microsoft. I volunteer darndot... He's the poor sap that sent one to Slacker radio and I personally hold responsible for getting it shut down. LOL.
