New to Flashing, need tips for a backup!
Evening everyone,
I'm growing increasingly antsy about flashing to a new ROM, preferably MightyROM, Juicy, or NRG "Leo." However, I am always one to over-prepare and provide a way out for myself. That being said, I would really appreciated if you guys could help me develop a guide for backing up all of your information/data/contacts/cabs/registry/etc so that, in a pinch, you could easily flash right back to stock or previous configurations. I have looked around on the web for how to "clone" a PPC so that one could just re-image it like a PC, but the products are woefully expensive. So my question is: What programs can safely be used to backup different aspects of a ROM installation? How can I easily create a folder of backup files that allow me to revert to a previous configuration with the fewest possible steps? XDA_UC? SPB Backup? Sprite? Sashimi? ??? Thanks! |
Re: New to Flashing, need tips for a backup!
i personaly use google sync to sync up all of my contacts and emails. the easy way to do things without replicating potential issues is to setup your sdconfig.txt file. you can have your phone install your applications and set up your customizations on first boot...

Hello tacotoy
If you would like, in the effort to make this quicker, here are two posts I have written recently. In regards to backup programs basically to make a long story short I did quite a eval of a few on your list and came up with SPB but if you want the long review heres a link to that: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...=104439&page=4 Btw, not that I know everything about these but I don't believe what you want is a clone program. Again I can't provide the details but clones are basically for making replicas of devices such as with a big company that might want to customize one device then take 20 others an make them the same. I know that sounds like what you could or would use too and I don't know what exactly the diff's are but what you want is just a basic backup program, which most are in the $25.00 dollar range and are worth the money for that Btw. Then I kinda did a long write up on flashing my first ROM too, which like you, as I thought I may want to return to what I have now (which I have btw) I took the overly couscous route, you can read what I did here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=107649 Hope that helps. |

Re: New to Flashing, need tips for a backup!
I would recommend against using SPB and backing up all of your programs, as your then backing up reg edits and things that may not play nice with the ROM you're gonna be running. PIM backup or MS Myphone, both free, are great for backing up your contacts, etc, and then Sashimi or XDA are both decent for loading CABs and reg edits up and having your e-mail loaded. But Sashimi can be run on any ROM, XDA needs to have been cooked in by the chef, so Sashimi would be the better way to go. I didn't follow Eschelon's link, but I have to believe it's to a post he did for using Sashimi. It's a GREAT read, very useful to learn all about Sashimi.
