Does Wifi Router = Tethering?

A newb question, I know, but I found the Wifi Router cab over at XDA, and was wondering if my carrier (USC) will consider this the dreaded "tethering" or not?

Yes, it's tethering

Do some searching on this forum and you'll see how to "stealth tether" so that your carrier can't tell you're doing it

All the custom ROMs do this. I'm fairly positive it works with USCC as well, but you'll want to verify that first

You can either flash to Mighty's ROM (or any of the other custom ROMs, as well) since they have stealth (undetected) tethering built right in... or you can go to the thread below and install the files from the first post (be sure to read the whole thread so that you are up to speed on tethering):

Re: Does Wifi Router = Tethering?

is everyone sure that wi-fi router is the same as tethering? reading in that thread posted above someone posted a SS of what pops up on their browser when trying to tether with VzW.

i have used wi-fi router but NEVER gotten that screen from VzW...

can someone that has Verizon and used wi-fi router comment?

or maybe i dont get that screen because i have unlimited data or ???

Not getting that screen from VZW is a GOOD thing... If that screen pops up, then it means they can see you tethering and want to charge you for it.

If the VZW screen doesn't pop up, then you are 'stealth tethering'

Re: Does Wifi Router = Tethering?

I read the entire post about tethering...

From what I could read - and I could be wrong - tethering has NEVER been detected via wifi router...
Can anyone confirm this?

It seemed to me, only people tethering via usb were caught ???

Also - I have noticed 2 files.

The ICS WModem fix cab
As well as the "Hot Fix" cab posted in the tethering discussion.

Are people installing BOTH of these files ???

Correct.

I know you're hoping to hear from someone besides me, but if you install those two files, then run wifi router, you will not be caught.

Trust me. I'm on Verizon as well, and have used this same method without a single problem.

But if you're still worried, flash to MightyMike's custom ROM and you can be sure you're tethering 100% undetected since he cooks the files into his ROM automatically for you

I use it on and off and haven't seen anything show up in the bill. I wouldn't be worried about it.

Re: Does Wifi Router = Tethering?

company phone so...don't really wanna do custom ROMs

i can install the 2 files but i am trying to figure out if i need to.

i have been using wi-fi router for awhile now, never got the vzw web page. so i am trying to figure out if...

a) my boss is going to ask me wtf is up with my phone bill =)
b) if wi-fi router does NOT need the 2 fix files as it is undetectable

etc...

i appreciate your help!

I understand about not wanting to flash to a custom ROM since it's comapny related

To answer your questions:

a) As long as you install the two files, you will not see a charge on your bill. But you MUST install these two files if you are on the stock ROM

b) wi-fi router DOES NEED the two files. the original files that came with your phone are 'bad' and can tell that you're tethering. those 2 files in the other thread you're referring to will replace the ones that came with your phone and modify the internet sharing function of your phone so that your carrier cannot see the tethering

So install those 2 files and you'll be good to go. Your boss should not see any extra charges, and you will still be able to use wifi router with no problems

good luck :thumbleft:

Re: Does Wifi Router = Tethering?

Do any US Cellular subscribers have experience with the "ICS and WModem Fix" cab, and does it work as described on our "stock" Tp2s? I just wanna make sure first...

And, does wmwifirouter have the fixes cooked in, or do I need to go ahead and download the hotfix cabs?

So if you have an unlimited data plan, does it even matter if your provider (Sprint for me) detects tethering? Only had my TP2 a few days now, but have interest in this wifi router deal. Searching now for this cab.

yes it does. because you're supposed to get the optional PAM (phone-as-modem) plan to do tethering with you device.

im having a senior moment guys...but the stealth tethering cab that is in the sticky section will work with the touch pro...correct?
