Auto brightness is one of the first things I turn off after a flash.

It definitely hurts battery life & these things are virtually unuseable in bright sun anyway (I would kill to have the screen in my P2 look like my ipod touch in bright sun)

anything auto is going to use more battery... it's the tradeoff you get for being lazy :)
I just keep mine at 60% and get fantastic battery life

i carry a flash light with me to control the brightness... i kid... i kid
