Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

Hello all

Sorry for such a noob question but as I've been seeing these talked about here, I was hoping someone could really put them more into perspective.

So what exactly are and are the differences between:

TouchFlo3D

Manila

Sense

Also what are the latest version of each and can I and/or should I update these on my stock Verizon TP2?

Thanks

+1

Coming from a Blackberry I have the same questions. I was pysched when I got my TP2 from USCell since they were selling it with WinMo 6.5 then I started watching video of TF3D 2.5 and was like "hey that is not on my phone, how do I do that!?" I had thought I had the latest version of what was available...

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

Manila is kind of the broader word. TF3D was the original manila. Now, instead of TF3D we have Sense. Sense comes in two forms, 2.1 and 2.5. The 2.1 works pretty much flawless and is the "new stock" so to speak. 2.5 is the cutting edge manila at the time and up until recently has been a little buggy. I haven't tried any of the newer releases, but I understand that they are pretty stable now. If your phone doesn't have either then you need to unlock and flash a custom rom. There are stickies at the top of the upgrade section that walk you through that process. It is very simple. If you have problems along the way, search first, and then if you haven't found your answer ask questions. This is a wonderful community that is always willing to help. Welcome to WinMo.

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

Thanks for the reply guys,

Ok so if understand this correctly.

Essentially Manila is both Touchflo3D and Sense?

TouchFlo3D is now called Sense?

The version of Sense I have on my TP2 is 2.1 but 2.5 is available.

So the question is, can I upgrade to Sense 2.5 without replacing my ROM or upgrading to WM6.5?

Also just to ask, how and where would I find the info on the versions I have.

Interestingly, I have looked at my initial settings menu an at the bottom it has a About TouchFLO 3D thing that reads, 2.1.38420.2

But then when I click on All Settings and go to the Systems tab and then, the TouchFLO icon it reads, TouchFLO for PocketPC Version 3.0 (Build 1194.3222).

Thanks

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

You need to upgrade your ROM..there is no other way to get Sense 2.5..If you have the animated weather on the home screen then that is Sense. If weather is only on the Weather Tab, that is plain ol TF3D..probably what you have if you are still running a stock ROM..I guess I was misleading, Sense is the new standard for custom roms. You should just unlock your phone and start flashing. It's fun, makes for a better phone, and you always get to try out the new stuff. Geezz, if I waited around for Sprint to push out a worthwhile update, I'll be on my TP3. lol

the verizon tp2 offical rom has tf3d 2.1 stock on it!!

they are all the same but just name rebranding first there was manilla > tf2d> tf3d> now theres sence!!

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

Yeah, I'm sure there's much more to it but I think I would really like to have that animated weather on the home screen so I may do this soon but I'm still working out the conifgs and learning how a WM Smartphone even works with the stock ROM and I think I would like to get that all set first, then do a backup of everything so in case anything goes wrong I can more easily restore everything I have done, then try some flashing.

All this stuff is pretty new to me as I've only been at it for about three days (haha) as all I've ever had before this was a V60s, but all here have been very very helpful and I'm learning quickly.

BTW it seems that many tout the MightROM one, so is this a good one to start off with as my first flash as it is good and stable?

At any rate, to get back on point, so essentially is TouchFLO 3D dead then?

In other words, will we never see a official TouchFlo 3D from what I am assuming is the manufacturer, HTC, and will only see Sense from now on or am I understanding this wrong?

Is Sense the version that is available to cookers and then TouchFLO 3D is not and is only released by HTC, is that how it works?

Thanks

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

You don't see the cooked ROMs with standard TF3D anymore because it's dated. I suggest either Mighty ROM 12/30 release with the Sense 2.1 (as in my sig) or Silence 2.1 ROM..I can only suggest these 2 as they are the only ones I used on a day to day. They are both very stable and as close to a Stock upgrade I think you will find. Obviously I run Mighty as I have been using his ROMs since the early days of the Diamond.

Oh so do the Mighty's not have WM 6.5 and or Sense 2.5?

Thanks

The Mighty I suggested is WinMo 6.5 with Sense 2.1, he does have some beta ROMs with 6.5 and Sense 2.5. For your first flash I would suggest sticking with the sense 2.1 build. Almost all custom ROMs now use Winmo 6.5..In fact a lot are using 6.5.1, 6.5.3, 6.5.5...stay away from those till you become a little more knowledgeable with you ppc..my advice anyway. Once you get used to the flashing process, then experiment with different ROMs.

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

Honestly, if you are new to WinMo, there's not a real reason to start with something older then move up. I would suggest flashing either MightyROM War or Impact.

There's no difference in the flashing process, and you might as well spend time with the newer versions of things if you are going to flash a custom ROM at all. I'm not saying flash the newst roms as they come out, but War and Impact are pretty stable, and it's a good way to see what's the latest and greatest.

The reason I'm going against what most would say is common sense, is that 95% of the chefs here use the latest and greatest in their ROMs.

I'd say within a few weeks to a month or so, there won't be any 2.1 ROMs left. The only real difference between Sprint/VZW 2.1 and Sense 2.1 is the weatherclock and some minor menu changes. Might as well get in on the new hotness if you are new anyway. Just my opinion.

Hey, I already knew the stuff you posted, but you did it in such a nice and thorough way I had to hit the thanks button. I was a n00b here when I got my Touch Vogue a couple years ago and everyone here was so nice to me and answered all my dumb questions and brought the phone geek out in me. Now with my TP2 I feel like a n00b all over again. LOL Once in a while I see new folks ask questions and get rude "do a search" or other mean stuff to people who are just excited and want to learn and feel overwhelmed, so it's really nice to see EVERYONE on this thread being helpful. Kudos to you all, but a special thanks to you mulhiny for the great tutorial on the TP2 interface and for nurturing a budding flasher! :D

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

Yeah, thanks!

I just got my AT&T Tilt 2 a week ago and all this "Manila, TF3D, Sense" stuff just wasn't computing all together in my head yet. After reading thru this thread I think I've pretty much got a better understanding of this!

So in my case, on my Tilt 2 running stock out of the box, I have WM 6.5 Pro, Radio Version 4.48.25.20 and it's running TF3D 2.1 on top of the windows default homescreen aka Titanium - did I hit all that right?? :)

Since I'm on the topic... would the recommended ROMs mentioned in this thread work on my device?

Thanks! :)

There's a GSM upgrade forum here, or you might check out XDA, as they tend to lean more towards the GSM side of things.

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

They're all the same thing lol

In the beginning there was TouchFlo 3D, or TF3D.
I have no idea who started the "Manila" term. Maybe because there are like 1000+ Manila files that are a part of TouchFlo 3D?
Sense came along when HTC decided to name the UI they were making for their android based phone. It then came to the Imagio and now Leo and various other phones. Once it was ported from the Imagio/Leo, we get Sense. There you have it!

TF3D / Manila = Same
Sense = refers to the newer TF3D with weather clock and animated weather backgrounds and so forth.

Re: Sorry to be a noob but what is the dif between, TF3d, Manila & Sence?

if you're new, i suggest playing with the stock ROM for a while. figure how things work, so you actually know the difference between stock and custom ROMs. Make note of things like memory, RAM, UI experience, WM6.1 (to compare with 6.5), etc. Plus it wouldn't hurt to learn the ropes of Windows Mobile so you know what you're doing when you flash ROMs and have to troubleshoot issues. It's a lot to take in if you've never had the pleasure of owning a WM device, so there's really no reason to get ahead of yourself.

The stock ROM on the tp2 is much better than stock on previous phones and i'm sure most of us here would agree. Custom ROMs will bring you newer versions of TouchFLO/Sense and WM 6.5 (if your device doesn't already have it). I recommend Juicy's ROM. NRG'S ROM is nice, but i've had low memory issues with it (prob cause of all the great things he puts in it). Never really been a fan of Mighty, but a lot of people here seem to love it. There are also different ROMs for 6.5 and 6.5.3... the latter being less stable, but more finger friendly.

When you flash, you will probably flash all the popular ROMs anyway, as they are all very good and have different things to offer the user. Have fun and make sure you use the correct unlocker and flash correct ROMs depending on your device being cdma or gsm. I can't tell you how many people i've seen who have permanantly or termporarily bricked their device because they jumped into flashing before they soaked up all the information out there.

Yeah, I wasn't planning on doing any flashing of ROMs anytime soon until I'm more confident I know more of the ropes :)

I'm coming from AT&T's Q9h and I customized that one to the fullest with reg edits/tweaks/hacks wallpapers, etc. With this new Tilt 2 I was a little more overwhelmed but catching up quick here :)

Side note... I kinda like the TF3D 2.1 setup it came with and I haven't disabled it yet to check out the default/standard setup, so I might do that today and see how well that goes.

Anywho, thanks again everyone and I'm sure I'll be posting again rather soon!
