Make camera image sharper

So I found this on XDA not sure if it's placebo but I seemed to have gotten some good result. It doesn't really change the size of the image/resolution but it seemed to make them sharper. Can anyone else test this?

I'm on MM WAR so my default setting might not be the same as stock.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598952

I didn't install the cab on the site since it was meant for HD2 so I just change my registry.

HKLM\Software\htc\Camera\Image\jpeg quaity\superFine

Changed the "3MSize" data to the following. After make sure when you take pictures that you set your camera to Superfine so the settings are used.

3.2mp 366260 (default)
5.0mp 643628 (from XDA)
8.0mp 746028 (from XDA)

Out of the three the best one for me is 643628. I assume it's because the 746028 data is way too much for the camera phone to handle so it barely makes a difference?

Here they are blown up.

I also found that even though the TP should be the same 3.2 MP camera, values are different.

To hell with all that, I took some pics with the battery cover off and it looked amazing compared to when the battery cover is on. So what I did is simply pop out the little plastic lens cover on the battery cover and the pics are as perfect as ever for a 3.2mp camera, atleast that was my experience.

You may be on to something. I found that the lens on the battery cover gets smudged very easy and affects the pics unless you wipe it before every shot. I don't know it I wanna pop it out tho, since i pocket my phone.

Great tip!.. i was getting annoyed with my TP2's image quality as i thought it was worse than the TP1 images i had taken.. they all seemed "dirty"

all i had to do was clean that little plastic cover.. thing is that its recessed so you really have to try hard to get it nice and clean..

now the images are WAY better! at least on par with the TP1 images

Re: Make camera image sharper

I read the whole XDA thread , and the conclusion that these numbers does not change the camera MP . the camera MP is 3.2 what ever you do ,
by changing the registery values , you are changing the picture compression . not more !

I've thought the same with the cover off but how are you preventing dust from getting near the camera lens since you removed the plastic cover?

Wirelessly posted (Sprint Touch Pro 2: Opera/9.7 (WindowsMobile; PPC; Opera Mobi/35541; U; en; Presto/2.1.1))

omg such a huge difference with the lense cover off. I don't want to pop it out though. maybe the plastic cover isn't completely clear. maybe I should glue on my own cover

Let us know if you figure out to glue in a glass window... that would be the best way to take care of it... shouldn't be too hard either.

Re: Make camera image sharper

So everyone knows, I removed the lens cover about 2 weeks ago and I haven't had any issues with dirt or smudges. I would say that 80% of the time my phone is in a case and 20% of the time in my pocket. I was looking at my lens a few minutes ago and it still lookz excellent and I havent stop to clean it. Then lens is still under the battery cover by a quarter of an inch or so, so that still protects the camera. All in all I think its definitely worth it to remove the lens cover.

Interesting thread.

There are several things at work on the original poster's photos.
Although the pictures are 5 megabites (which had to be software upscaling), you find quite a bit of edge enhancement which shows up on hard edges. Also consider that to display it on these web pages, it had to be downscaled to fit. If you're usually taking pictures for the web, it makes for a cleaner picture to shoot it closer to the resolution you intend to post unless you can shoot in camera raw and have access to software to resize it to the needed size.

I looked at my lens cover this morning, and could hardly see thru it! Yech! A lens cleaner later, it is clear again. I have not tried any pictures yet, but will. For taking a quick snap of something, this camera is usable. If it really matters, I use a digital camera anyway....

You guys with the crud on the lens, by chance are you using one of those slide in cases that have felt to cushion the phone?

Re: Make camera image sharper

I gave this hack a try.... the first thing to point out is that on my phone (VZW TP2 running stock rom), the 3M setting under Super Fine was set much higher by default, 541228. I tried increasing it to the highest value listed by the OP, 700000-whatever. I did not really notice any difference in picture quality. Furthermore, I looked at the file size of a pic taken at the default setting, and one with the increased setting... there was only a 12 KB difference in file size (from 501 KB to 513 KB).

there was still quite a bit of digital noise and the pics were just OK overall. I also tried with the back cover taken off, and again, I really noticed no difference. BUT, I keep the lens cover very clean, no finger smudges or anything. My problem with the TP2 camera is even at the lowest ISO setting, the images just have too much noise and grain, even taken in daylight.

exactly, but with these miniscule lens & sensors you get what you get I suppose (I don't care how many megapixels they claim it is)

I have a 24"x36" image of my Daughter hanging on my family room wall. Nobody that sees it can believe the quality of it & it was shot with a 3 megapixel camera.

The difference is, THAT 3 megapixel sensor was the size of a large postage stamp, not the size of a pencil lead... (& it was a $3000 camera)

Its crazy how it seems that Im the only one that thinks my TP2 takes better pictures than my Old TP. The images seem clearer except of course in the somewhat dark places, fckn HTc why did the flash had to be removed!!??

It's not worth the carpel tunnel, look at what http://htcclassaction.org/ accomplished.

I'm still waiting for better video drivers in 2d/3d...

Until Microsoft dictates WM7 requirements to HTC, we are just getting recycled phones with fewer new bells and whistles.

I also removed the camera lens as well and it makes a nice difference. If the camera gets destroyed oh well it sucks anyway....Thanks
