Screen Randomly Wakes Up
 

Hey guys,

I searched the TP2 forums, just wanted to see, is there a resolution to the screen randomly turning on?

It single handedly reigns havoc. Screen turns on in pocket, battery life starts wearing down, camera, phone dialer & other apps launch. It really is annoying. Hopefully there is a cab / registry fix for this?

Also,
The TP2 cleanup thread has one large cab, are there individual cabs for those tweaks incase I do not want to apply all of those tweaks?

I have the exact same problem. It just started in the last couple of weeks. I've had GoodThings2Life cleanup since I got the phone without any problems. Is there a chance that a PRL update could be causing the screen to wake from sleep mode to making me look stupid by calling people without calling them?

I read the Treo & TP forums and apparently there is a program that executes & ultimately calls the screen wakup method / function.

Maybe this can be disabled somehow?

Maybe that same thing can disable the screen wakeup when new text messages arrive....

There could be a lot of reasons why it could be turning on randomly.

Is it in the case, or out of the case?

A good thing to do first is download and install SKTools first, then check what's running in the background (processes and services). Mine turns on randomly sometimes but that's because of my RSS reader updating in the background.

lots of reasons why the screen wakes up
when you change service or towers the screen wakes up for some dumb reason.
you get a txt message, im assuming your not getting them, but this is a reason
and then i read, it happened to me once or i caught it once, at midnight it wakes up

I hear what you guys are saying, but is there a way to only wake up the screen on a phone call?

I have only exchange / activesync email running (asides from default TP2 apps)

Wake Up on New SMS

HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL : DisableSMSWakeUpEvent <-- set to "1" by default. Change value to "0"

Installed to device...soft reset as well....going to try and change registry manually now

Cab did not update the registry, just did it manually, doing soft reset now....

i know when you do registry settings you have to wait a few seconds. also make sure you dont do what the registry setting is trying to set up.

its a long shot but my touch 6900 did this and the fix was to turn off time synchronization in phone settings. the phone is checking time with the tower. I've done it with all my phones since and don't have that problem

Once, I was trying to get to sleep and all of the sudden, the screen came on and the entire room lit up. At first, I didn't know what it was and it scared the shit out of me!

If you do a search this has been a problem and been discussed since winmo has been out. Not just on HTC devices. And there hasnt been a fix to come out yet

I honestly think this problem is a little different than the general one that may plague WinMo devices. My MDA never woke up by itself (didn't do much of anything else either). I honestly think it has to do with some of the running programs and services in the background. Some are there and you didn't tell them to be there when you installed. Some are there and you never thought they would need to be running in the background. I periodically have to go into SKTools and see what's doing behind the scenes to make sure everything that is there is supposed to be, etc etc. I've cut out some script programs and am just left with Automatic Call Recorder as the only service I allow that I installed myself.

Its there dude. I have sprint and I see it there. Although changing it did not fix anything.

HKey Local Machine\Drivers\Builtin\RIL
Then in PHMRegedit I click Values
You will see DisableSMSWakeUPEvent

Does anyone know if there is another settting that has to be changed with this? I removed the cab file pyschomaniac provided, did the registry change manually & soft reset / waited it out. It still wakes up the phone.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, the screen will ALWAYS wake up on SMS as long as you have a CDMA phone. It's just like conference calling, the problem doesn't stem from the phone or the rom, but limitations of the CDMA service and theres nothing...scratch that impossible has happened...there's not much we can do about it at this point.

yes because your on 3G network and then when you get a txt message it switches to 1X. when you switch service your phone will wake up.

this is why the phone actually wakesup. i dont think it has anything to do with your txt messages.

I have the same problem, and not just with SMS, but all notifications waking the screen. Also I have watched the screen come on when the phone changed from Sprint to digital roaming.

Even if you lock the phone from the start menu the screen wakes on all of these events. If the phone is in your pocket or case the screen then stays awake if it is touched. So power consumption is an issue. But at least the lock prevents pocket calls, inadvertent hang-ups, and a multidude of other possible key presses.

One thing I plan to do to combat this is get a body glove case or similar that has at least a little edge around the screen so there is a buffer between the screen and the case. Lock the phone before holstering, and the screen wakes (hopefully) won't last very long depending on display settings.

It is poor design in both the hardware and software. In my opinion, the screen should only wake for an incoming call. Any other events you can push the button to turn the screen on and see what it is/was.

Additional info....

When I first looked in the registry for the DisableSMSWake as mentioned earlier in the thread, the key was not there at all. I installed the cab (also earlier in the thread) and then the key name was there and set to 1.

Text message wakes the screen...

I changed it to 0.

Text message still wakes the screen...

Yes, I soft reset between regedits.

there is NO fix for waking up when recieving a sms.
