Or does your carrier make an issue only when you literally tether using a physical cable?

I don't think they can detect when you make your phone a hot spot. But it is still considered tethering.

Wifi sharing is the same thing as tethering, except instead of connecting through usb to the computer, you are broadcasting wireless signals.

If your carrier allows you to tether with wifi/usb/bt, you're fine. Otherwise, you're probably violating your service agreement by bypassing or attempting to bypass the detection features they put in place to determine your usage and service charges. Essentially, you're stealing extra services/features they normally charge extra for.

bairice is correct, wifi sharing is the exact samething as tethering with a cable, your carrier can't tell the difference. if usb tethering is illegal with your service, then wifi tethering is illegal also. After writing this I do wonder why we are allowed to talk about tethering on this website but no talk of warez.

Probably because warez are actually illegal by law and tethering is not illegal. At best its a violation of your terms of service and can get you kicked off your carrier but can't land you in jail like warez.

Put the legel issue aside, can they detect any wifi sharing? Tether or not, TP2 uses lots of MB each month.

they can't detect any sharing at all but sometimes if you use too much data they will contact you and let you know to stop or add pam to your account but you have to use massive amounts before they will contact you.

Tethering is not illegal. It is something that the carrier may not want you to do because they charge extra for it, but in no way illegal. Theoratically speaking if you speak to 90% of CS they will tell you tethering isn't possible without the plan.

There is not much a carrier can do to prove that you tether without violating your privacy. They do set that 5gb cap on some carriers and if you go over ti some have gotten warning notice. None for sprint so far.

And yes it is same as using a cable, if you use wmwifirouter for example it even runs ICS in the background. The HTC wifirouter while does not run ICS probably has ICS components built in.
