Trying to connect to my ISP through cell line
Hi, Is there a way to change modem settings in an Alltel PPC6800 phone?
I tried setting up my ISP service by calling a 9 digit number and i'm getting an error that it can't connect for an unknown reason.....is there a way to change modem setting to allow it to connect... i know it worked perfect with a palm treo 700wx and i figure it's just a minor setting somewhere....please let me know....thanks. |
Why wouldn't you just want to use the sprint data network? It's much faster than dialup, even at 1x speeds.
|
im on alltel for one...and the dialup is free
|
You bought a Mogul and didn't get a Power Vision plan?
AHAHAHAHAHAHA Sorry....that was mean. You REALLY need to get the unlimited Power Vision data plan. It's only $15 a month. |
Oh...whoops....your on Allhell....I mean Alltel.
You need a data plan for the Mogul....otherwise it's a pretty useless phone. |
no...i use Alltel...BTW??? am i in the wrong forum? ur all assuming i have sprint...and i don't have data plan on alltel it just uses up minutes...
|
Like i said alltel has 1x data in our area and it uses up only minutes, doesn't charge for the amount of data used...but still like i said it doesn't connect the way it should, it's getting the username and password is wrong error after loading a few pages,

Alltel doesn't have data plans? Are you sure?
|
what the heck are you talking about alltel has one of the fastest internet out there....check out www.alltel.com
|
Connect quickly and securely - Get secure connections at speeds up to 2.4 Mbps.

First of all....2.4MB is just EVDO Rev.0. Sprint and Verizon have that too. It's nothing special.
Second, I asked you if they have data plans...I didn't say they didn't. |
ok...yes. they have fast internet.....
|
So you're trying to connect to alltell's data network and you're getting errors? You shouldn't have to dial a 9 digit number to connect to the cell network... I believe Alltel uses #777 just like sprint... your user name and pass should be in the phone when you activated it... if not you should probably call alltel
|
no, i don't want to use up my minutes at alltel with the #777 so i want to dial a 9 digit number instead it's slower but good enough to check emails..
i used it at all times with my 700wx treo |
Your not making sense here... CDMA devices such as the Mogul don't use your plan minutes at all. They charge you for usage in one of two ways.. you either get an unlimited data plan, and pay the 15,20 bux or whatever Alltel charges a month OR you can probably have it set up for casual data - where you only get charged for what you use. Your plan minutes have NOTHING at all to do with your data access. :)
|
I agree with Krazy. I have alltels data plan and it DOES NOT charge for minutes when connected to the data, even in 1x. I do a lot of traveling and hit 1x all the time and have never been charged minute usage for data. One other thing you may want to do is update your PRL. Search for alltel and you will find a thread in the apache section that has a list of prls. I'm currently using 40023 which is a prl for the laptop data cards. It allows roaming on sprints evdo. That may help with the speed in your area. If alltel is charging you for minutes when connected you probably don't have the data plan or it is set up wrong. May want to call customer service.

No, i don't have a data plan.... i'm using the voice only and the mobile axcess for web...

If I remember correctly the axxess is $19.99 a month. If you change your plan to the smart choice plan that has unlimited data, nights and weekend at 7pm, my circle and unlimited messaging for about the same fees when you add all that to the voice plan. Might want to look into. This phone was designed to have mobile web as part of it.

I don't need more data then using up my minutes, i do most of it night and weekend which doesn't use minutes

Ok as to your original question what you need to do is go to settings/connections/connections. In ther you will find add new modem connection. Click on that and it should walk you through the setup for your isp.

reason for dialup issues?
from my understanding dial up will not work on a cell phone in similar ways that it will not work with a voip system we once attempted to make a dialup call with a voip phone modem just for testing and it was a no go. the main reason for this is the call will not have the fidelity of a line due to the compression that is used during transfer their would also be a delay that may cause issues. the best example is if someone holds the cell put to a radio/band you cant hear whats going on very clearly due to the compression. correct me if im wrong... it happens alot
|
i tried and it's saying it cannot connect for an unknown reason.....

I tried putting in the dns settings that i got from my isp but it didn't make any difference....
|
It's not going to work. I don't get why you want to do this anyway, by the time you pay for a dialup ISP and have to use your minutes if you want to get online during the day, you're better off paying a few bucks more for real data.
|
Well you would have me convinced but i was doing it with me treo 700wx...
it connected and the internet was very stable too Quote:
|
Maybe you had some kind of special setup or something, but basically, dialup isn't going to work very well over a cell connection, if at all. The way they work is optimized for voice, data will be very slow if it works at all.
|
no...i left everything at default and automatic settings...i gave it any name...through cellular line, put in username and password...didn't use domain name....and connected and it worked perfect and it was fast enough to check email and stuff.
