Micro SD Storage Card

I have searched the forums and have not found a suitable concrete answer. The question I would like to pose is Whats is the MAXIMUM size storage card that the Sprint Mogul/PPC6800 will support. I am looking to install a 4GB but would prefer to install a 6GB.
Thanks in Advance

PFD251 10-05-2007 05:35 PM

Everything I've seen says 4gb is the largest.

TurboFool 10-05-2007 05:49 PM

I haven't seen any sign that 4GB is the limit. In fact I thought someone had tried and succeeded with 6GB. Considering it support microSDHC and the microSDHC standard includes capacities much higher than 4GB, I find it hard to believe the device would support only the smallest microSDHC card. I think 4GB is the largest nearly anyone's tried, as the new larger ones are nearly impossible to find right now.

Anyway, you should have separated 512MB and 1GB so we could see who's using the included 512MB card versus who's using a separately-purchased 1GB card, like I am.

That was me. Sandisk 6GB microSDHC confirmed working without any modifications/hacks whatsoever. Just insert and go.

supermanmcgee 10-05-2007 06:04 PM

8gb?

You two with the 8gb cards... How are they working (and where did you find them?) My buddy has an 8 gig iphone and i would love to have more storage space than he does. :)

I've seen posts from people who talked to HTC, who confirmed that 8GB worked. HTC could not test higher since nothing higher exists today.

since the phone supports 4gig (and thus, it obviously supports sdhc) I think it is safe to say it supports as much as any other sdhc device supports (MUCH larger cards than you'd find out today)...

I have also seen several reports of people using 8gig cards w/o problems on here and on other forums....

Which ROM are you running on your Mogul? I got the same card but mine is only being recognized as 1.7GB. It does work, however. Tried loading it with over 4GB of data on my PC but Mogul still only saw the first 1.7GB I put on it. I am still using the 2.08.651.4 ROM. Even installed sdbus.dll and sdmemory.dll to no effect. I read a post over at XDA that said you needed WM6 build 17944 or higher in order to use any card over 4GB.

I am running the latest Alltel ROM on my Sprint mogul (build 17745, AKU .2.3). That's the same build as the latest Sprint ROM.

So all I can suggest to you is to upgrade to the newest ROM and your card should work. I had the exact same issue on my Apache (only seeing 1.7 of the card) using older SDHC drivers--which had worked fine for a 4GB SDHC card. So I think perhaps that older version sdmemory just isn't equipped to properly handle the a 6GB card--even though it can see it.

But if you just upgrade your ROM--either to the official Sprint upgrade (you can fix the keyboard issue now) or to the Alltel WM6 upgrade (would need to modify your bootloader first) then you can fully use your 6GB card.

Sdhc = 32gb

Yes, it's commonly known that the SDHC spec will go up to 32GB, but that doesn't guarantee that the Titan will; though we can hope so. HTC has stated they've only been able to test 8GB due to nothing higher existing.

Are you saying that you know the Titan will support 32GB? If so, could you be so kind as to provide a link?

Yes, SDHC goes to 32GB. Supporting SDHC means supporting 32GB.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-sdhc-cards.htm

Snipet taken from article

"Secure Digital was forced to create a new specification for SDHC cards when the previous specification topped out at a capacity of 2GB. This occurred previously when SD cards hit the 512MB wall. The new 2.00 specification should last a bit longer, as it allows SDHC cards to reach a maximum capacity of 32GB. Secure Digital is so-named because of its ability to protect copyright content through digital rights management or DRM. Because of this, it is a favored flash memory format in the audiovisual industry."

Taken from another site
SDHC is the designation for any SD or SD-based card that is larger than 2 GB and adheres to the new SD 2.00 specification required for cards and hosts to support 4 GB to 32 GB capacities.

Ahhh ... an idealist, in a world of compromisers! ;=)

A world in which all manufacturers intrepreted and adhered to 'standards' equally would be a cool place to consumers of digital toys.

Thanks for stating what we already know.

Please explain how your post is a response to my post. I don't see the link. TIA.

My bad thought u wanted link to sd specs.. and regarding your questing, highest capcity micro sd card now is 8gb so there is still a way to go for a 32gb micro sd cards. Don't think there will be a link to your question.

Follow-up...Upgraded the ROM - 6GB card still seen as 1.7GB. Reinstalled the sdmemory and sdbus dll's as they are not in the new Sprint ROM - no change. Stopped by an Alltel store and put the card into their display 6800 which was running WM5 - recognized the full card. The sales rep had not yet seen a 6GB card and he pulled out his personal 6800 (running WM6 same ROM as yours) - recognized the full card also. Obviously some other differences in the Alltel ROM. Could you post the Alltel registry settings for SDHC to compare with those in the Srpint registry.

I have a 4gb and it works fine. Are there 8GB MicroSD out there? I really want one.

stratman71 10-08-2007 04:10 PM

dtndvm, you didn't order your card off Ebay, did you? Many sellers there are notorious for selling fake cards relabeled and programed to report higher capacity. I got burned with a 512mb labeled mmc that was a true 256mb card, even though it reported around 500MB free it wouldn't write above 220 or so.

Any way to hook your card up to a pc and check it with partition magic? it should show the real available space, and not the spoofable space listed in windows explorer.

No, PC recognizes full card and has no problem reading/writing to it. I filled it up with over 5gb of data on my PC just to test it. Also, it's been recognized on 2 different Alltel 6800's (one WM5 & one WM6) for its full capacity, but I didn't have a chance to play around with it on those devices as the store was closing. Checked it on one other Mogul at a Sprint store and it also only saw a 1.7GB card. I have checked it on my PC with Cute Partition Manager and it saw the full size. I even partitioned it into 2 and 4GB partitions, which my PC was happy with, but my Mogul still could only see 1.7GB of the card. I have since reformatted it back to its full size and it makes a great jump drive. I'd love to find someone close with a Mogul running the Alltel ROM to test it on before I put that ROM on my device as I just upgraded my Sprint ROM and reinstalled everything.

That article is puzzling me....I have a 2gb SD CARD that I was using in my 6600 and the article states they stopped at 512MB??? WTF??? Whoever wrote the article needs a technology check.

I got a 6GB SanDisk card 2 weeks ago. Mogul would not recognize it's full capicity out of the box. Played around with it quite a bit but could only get it to recognize 1.7GB. Upgraded the ROM and tried installing SDHC cab but still no luck. Then found luv2chill's updated drivers in the upgrades forum. Installed the SDHC.777 cab and Mogul saw full card with no trouble. Filled the card with data and no read/write problems so far. Hope this helps!

Quickly...take your Mogul back and exchange it under warranty for one that has working punctuation and shift keys. And by the way, it takes the same number of key strokes to type "to" as it does to type "2".

dtndvm,

Is the SDHC .777 cab the "drivers" from luv2chill that you are referring to, or are there seperate drivers in addition to the sdhc.777 cab that I need to install to get my mogul to read the 6gb micro sdhc card from sandisk?

Thanks,

dtndvm--forgive my confusion, but you state you saw a unit running WM5 that could see the full 6gb card?

What OS are you running now? It sounded like you upgraded to WM6.

I'm having the same issue you experienced with my device only seeing the first 1.7GB. The SDHC.777 cab didn't work for me though (couldn't read any SD card with those dll's), but it may be due to me still running WM5.

I'm hoping someone can figure out this issue I'm having.

When I was first trying to get my 6GB card to work on my Mogul, I stopped into an Alltel store. They had a PPC6800 running WM5 on display. I popped my card in and it worked great on the stock WM5 Alltel ROM. The sales rep had a PPC6800 in his pocket that he had upgraded to WM6 (unsure which ROM). He put the 6GB card into his device and it worked great too. He had never even seen a 6GB card so I know he hadn't added any files to support the larger cards. Conclusion is that the Alltel ROM's support SDHC cards with no tweaks whether running WM5 or WM6.

Got my Mogul to work with my 6GB card by installing the SDHC777 cab originally posted by Luv2chill. My Mogul has always been running WM6. When I upgraded to the newest ROM, my card was recognized and works with the stock ROM (no SDHC777 needed). Interesting, the dll's that the SDHC777 cab installs are not found in windows in the new ROM?

You might want to try the SDHC cab if you don't want to install the latest ROM. Before I found the SDHC777 cab, I tried the SDHC cab and had no luck. My Mogul only saw the 1.7GB yours is seeing. Both cabs contain the same files, but they are different versions.

Good Luck

Thx.

I'm a bit of a bastard right now. My device is actually a 1st generation Motorola Q running WM5 and there is not ROM upgrades to WM6.

I used the first SDHC cab to allow SDHC cards to work, which let me use a Class 4 SDHC 4gb card.

As I said, the SDHC.777 dll's disable my SD slot. It looks like the dll's are just newer. If you saw a WM5 device able to read the full 6gb, then I think there may be some missing files or reg entries that may be needed.

I'm hoping someone can help me find the missing link.

So please name & source[ftp directory structure] what you grabbed from luv2chill's stuff.
Lastly I believe I hear your saying that the SDHC.777 "should" be fine for me and that's ALL I'll need to get the 6GB card recognized. Is this correct ?

Thank you Sir for any insight

There's nothing to fear upgrading to the official Sprint 2.17 ROM. Nothing to unlock, the entire process is easy and painless.

ChristianProgrammer 02-01-2008 01:00 AM

Might you want to point me to a link on that .EZ 217 update How to.....I of course now have a 6GB SDHC and the Mogul "SEEs" it all thanks to the SDHC hack So I'm thinking that the SD Card install style for the new 3.16 might be my ticket !!!!!! instead if 2.17 Did the Official ROM Come out for 3.16 yet ??

BetaMan 02-09-2008 01:18 PM

When I install the sdhc777 cab above, my phone stops seeing memory card COMPLETELY!
I have a XV6800 and upgraded to the new CDC ROM that enables the GPS, however, even before I upgraded the ROM it wouldn't see the entire 6GB card. After I uninstall the driver, it sees memory cards again, however only 1.7 GB again...

Ideas?
