Alltel Titan not connecting to Internet above 1x

I got my Titan replaced under warranty for screen issues. The new phone will almost never connect to the Internet unless the signal is 1x. If it says Ev or rA, I have no Internet. When I try to connect, like to force an email download, open a web page, or use Internet Sharing, it gives various errors, including "username / password incorrect" and even "unknown reason". Every once in a great while it will connect successfully, but it never stays connected long.

Someone posted a question about forcing a phone to use 1x, and I've made that change so I now have Internet, but I would like to get the fast Internet I'm paying for... any ideas?

Possibly relevant info:
1. I'm a truck driver, so I change towers constantly, and am almost always roaming, but this problem does not change in my home area.

2. There was a bit of a commotion when I got my phone replaced; the clerks were unfriendly and unhelpful. We talked them into replacing the phone eventually, but there had been some unfriendly words spoken along the way, and the man was seriously pissed off while he was programming my phone (so was I, actually). I DO NOT suspect that he did something to make this happen - but he could have.

Bummer. I was hoping someone knew exaclty what the problem was. I wasn't hopeful, though, since I've been searching here for months and haven't seen it mentioned.

The next thing I'm going to try is resetting the phone - which I hate to do because I rely on it so much and have so little time to reinstall and reset everything. Oh well. Maybe instead it's time to upgrade to the Touch or a new Android phone.

But hey, thanks for the referral to Navizon - it looks like a GREAT idea. The UI leaves a lot to be desired, but if I ever get it working right, it looks to be awesome.
