I Think I found the issue w/ the rapidly draining battery !!

I noticed this a few weeks ago but I had no time to post nor time to investigate... The sad thing is that I cant replicate this but I can say for certain that whoever has this issue would definately lose battery power quickly. Basically one night when I was in a completely dark room I put the PPC in standby. What I noticed was a very faint glow on the screen as if the backlight was STILL on dispite it being in standby. That would surely kill batt power quickly. So I turned it back on then off again into standby , the glow was still there. FYI. ...I had the HTC home page installed I had the backight app as one of the quick apps and I used to keep the backlight at the second dimmest setting (because batt power sucked) and I So I turned it back on again and then turned the backlight up to the second brightest setting., then put it back into standby and then the screen was completely dark !!! . I havent had this problem anymore that I know of (yet Im not in a dark room all the time to find out) ...but I think Im not having this issue anymore.... i think by keeping the backlight on the brighter settings when using instead of low settings makes the screen completely turn off when its supposed to...and my battery power is super now... ie. today in 12 hrs i went from 100% to 80 % . Cant say whats the real fix (should have troubleshooted when it was happening) but maybe you guys can figure it out. !!!! So go in a dark room and look very closely at the screen when in standby to see if you have a leaking backlight.

i know tht activ sync sometime is open and it never closes unless u manually go to END all programs. and tht too an drain ur battry is activ sync is always on

yes but an active app running is prob a pea-shooter compared to a glowing backlight stuck on when it should be off.

I tried to replicate your settings and I have no light whatsoever when my Mogul is in standby (off), with any backlight settings. Besides, my battery power usage is fine.

Since you said you can't reproduce the issue, you either had an errant app running in the background, or you have flakey hardware.

realmadrid 08-21-2007 10:13 PM

TC1 ...only apps I had was the HTC today, HTC X-button and the Touch dialer...nothing else. I ve been fine over the last two weeks. All Im saying is that the people WITH a major battery problem should check this out. If your battery is fine then obviously your light is fine. And rememeber becase of the glare in lighted conditions you NEED to go in a dark room.

dcd 08-21-2007 11:22 PM

mines done this, but only a few times. i think its a bug. ive always noticed it and turned back on and off again, and it went away. i dont think its ever had real effect on my battery.

gameboy213 08-22-2007 01:38 AM

I have seen it as well occasionally but overall my battery is good..... but it sure could be a drain if it happened often.

kronium 08-22-2007 02:59 AM

Google maps leaves the screen "glowing black" all the time. Close google maps, go to stand by again, and the screen shuts off. The main reason I use Live now.

storino03 08-22-2007 03:25 AM

Mine did that occasionally as well, but I would notice it usually, and turn the screen on and off until it went completely off.

Mine does this as well. It happens when the backlight is set at the lowest setting and a program is running. It does not happen 100% of the time under these conditions, but it is a frequent occurrence. If the backlight is on any other setting or if no program is running, I've never seen it happen.

TC1 08-22-2007 10:39 AM

Well, there ya go. Sounds like a bug to me. Someone experiencing the problem should report the details to HTC America so it can be fixed.

xtreme571 08-22-2007 10:49 AM

i've had same problem...i was actually able to see the HTC home plugin...and i had been wondering why is the square still on the screen when its in standby...it was too soon for it to be a burn-in...but i've hard reset my phone multiple times and installed/uninstalled multiiple programs so i dont know what exactly is doing it

realmadrid 08-22-2007 11:24 AM

Mine was only visible in complete darkness. The only way you could tell is when you finally turn it off the screen is completely black and you see the difference. The thing is that if you were walking around all day and your backlight was leaking like that in standby and you didn't notice, your battery doesn't have a chance. Like I said, I don't have this issue anymore thank god.

my problem was solved after i removed weatherpanel because it kept trying to update for the weather but couldnt and my battery was draining within an hour..is there anyfix behind this ? cause i do like the weatherpanel program alot.

papped 08-22-2007 01:48 PM

Google maps leaves the screen on while it's running so that you don't have to keep turning the phone back on to look at driving directions.

There is a weatherpanel auth fix, which fixes the server auth problem.

For a short time, WP was killing my battery in a few hours because it was checking the server 24/7. Now WP works fine for me.

omoks 08-22-2007 02:39 PM

I've had that happen to me once. It scared the hell out of me because i though it was a burn-in. However I think the real issue with battery is a software issue. Try this, let your battery run down to about 30 or less percent. Do a soft reset and you'll probably notice a 10 to 20 percent increase.
I use to do this with my T-Mobile MDA and XDA and I'd get about 5 to 10 percent increase in batt stregth after a soft reset but never this much.

Just got this from an old Tips & Trick for PPC6700 (works for my XV6700), but who knows it worked on Titan too.
I got it from http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...mpilation.html

Active Sync Solution to Battery Drain Problem

think I have a solution to the Battery drain problem with the XV6700 PDA phone. It looks like Ative sync is trying to come on and sync draining the power from our units. Talked to a verizon tech. who provided the available info. Hope it helps. Sure has been an irritant not being able to trust my phone. Here's the instructions:

Go to program files
Go to active sync
Go to menu
Go to add server source (add a fake server and settings)
Once that is finished
Go to Schedule and set to manual
Go to options and delete exchange server from options

Working good so far. For the first time I have had 90% power all day long. Always before it would go down to 60% power or less in one day with no phone calls or gaming.

Please note that some have reported this "trick" is not compatible with the NEW Sprint AKU2/MSFP Rom update. Others have reported it works with the ROM update if you turn off the network time sync under phone settings

EDIT : In my opinion the safe way is to close/kill activesync every time ppc unpluged from usb/desktop or whenever after softreset.

iv'e noticed mine does that when its low signal when it switches from 1x to evo and have not found a fix

savy1 09-03-2007 09:45 PM

I found out what the problem is. My mogul did this last night also and I almost freeked out but then I started snooping .

go to start - settings - system ! then click key lock.
by default the first one is choosen. choosE the second one and problem solved. when phone button is touched in phone the light won't come on dimly.

no offense but i think this is irrelevant. ive never changed that setting and ive previously had the issue, and it went away. the issue here is not the light dimly coming on when a button is pressed.

savy1 09-04-2007 09:58 AM

I didn't say u changed that setting. I never changed it on mine either, however when the first checkbox is checked and u lock the phone if the phone pulls an email account or a button is pressed while the phone is locked and the room is dark enough ull notice the screen brighten slightly from its dark not bright state.

gzub 09-05-2007 12:02 PM

Poking around I figured out how to get the phone to be in the dim glowing state first mentioned in this post...

Note: I am using the UserIdle power state simply because it is not enabled by default and is a good place to test changes to the power management.

Here is what I did:
  • Add a timeout for the UserIdle State on both AC and Battery.
  • Set the Power-Manageable display to state D0 - always on (if this is turned off (D4) it also kills any backlight control - Some other power management states are available, but are not relevant to this thread)
  • Set Backlight to go to power state D3 (this is what dims the screen way down and turns off the button backlighting)

Make sure you have the Display and PowerOff timeouts set to longer than the UserIdle timeouts specified below. Make the registry changes, wait the prescribed number of seconds and you see the "dim" state we have been seeing. Any user action will make the screen brighten to the normal level.

So the question is since none of the power related registry keys are putting the backlight into D3, what is explicitly forcing it to D3, and what can we do to stop it.

Code:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\UserIdle]
"bkl1:"=dword:00000003

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\State\UserIdle\{EB91C7C9-8BF6-4a2d-9AB8-69724EED97D1}]
@=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\Timeouts]
"ACUserIdle"=dword:000000B4
"BattUserIdle"=dword:000000B4

What I do to preserve my battery life is I turn active sync off and I turb off all beams also what I find my self doing constantly is turning of data connection and push so it doesnt drain so fast heavy texting and a solid amount of calling for an 8 hour shift I find my self comen home with 60% battery and still being able to talk for 3 hours...
