what do i have to lose? besides my contacts info? and all the previous downloaded/installed apps and music files

Everything that is stored on the device.. but it wont touch the storage card. You will have to reinstall all your apps, and any customization done to your device.

A hard reset restores the Mogul to factory settings. It will be exactly like it was when you opened the box and turned it on for the first time. Settings, preferences, contacts, programs, everything in memory will be gone. The only thing it won't touch is what's saved on the memory card.

Save yourself some work!

Go get PIM Backup 2.5 from Xda. It will save your contacts and other personal information, if you like, for you. You simply restore your backup after you hard reset.
