GPS on Mogul

According to sprints own documentation...

PDF Link (Page 176)

It DOES have a GPS receiver built in, but it's not for customer use....

Am I to assume this is something frozen off in firmware, that can later be re-activated with enough hacking?

I think this line explains it all:

"Finally, customers are advised that the Mogul’s ALI capability is to be used for E911 purposes only."

It's not true GPS. It's been discussed over and over and over....and over...

Bottom line: You want GPS in the fashion you're talking about, buy a BT receiver.

I dont know about that, I read over on XDA forums that it DOES have a true GPS built in. there is a rumour flying around that they may indeed activate it through a software update. same as they will for evdo rev a.

The reason stated for them not utilizing the GPS fully is cause they had some software/hardware issues with them working together. Check out those post on XDA and you will be convince that the chip inside of the Mogul is indeed fully capable. yes it does e911 now but it dont do full gps cause they had software issues or something. in fact it does 3 different types of gps. but im no expert, you'll have to read up on XDA

In any case some guy said it has the same chip in it than another phone that DOES have full gps

BS. The description itself says "The Mogul is an ALI-capable smart device equipped with a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver supporting a satellite-based GPS ALI-capable network to comply with the FCC’s ALI requirements."

Fact is that it is equipped with GPS, and the reciever recieves GPS signals. ALI simply refers to the Automatic Location Identification database system that holds your name, ESN and number so that they know who is calling.

The sad thing is that there is talk that advertisers might be getting access to it to be able to track where you are and send you targetted ads via text or phone call for businesses that are near your location.
