Won't utilize built in wifi ~ help

This is my 1st post but have been reading alot of them here ~ great site ~ BUT, unfortunately, alot of it goes above my head! This mogul is my 1st PPC & it can be a bit overwhelming. When I click the WIFI switch I can't hook up to my office router (or anywhere else) I have changed the security on the router to OPEN & WEP. When I go into my network, it shows up so I hit next, Authentication is OPEN & Data Encrypt is WEP. I have tried checking the auto key provided or typed in one of my WEP key # then hit next & check the IEEE box but EAP type says Smart Card ~ when I hit Properties on it, I get a message saying "I Can't log on to wireless network. This network requires a Personal Certificate to positively identify you." It obviously won't connect. What do I do to fix these certificate issues & is that the reason I can't connect to WIFI? Until I'm able to get on with WIFI/WLAN there's no point of keeping my Slingbox or any other program I have while being online. I'm in an area where I don't get EVDO.

I hope you can help
Thanks

I think were in the same boat. This is my 1st PPC also and its getting crazy! I also try to use my wifi it detects lots of signals but i cant seem to use one. The apts i live in has wifi in the office to use when your by the pool and theres no key I cant even log on to that. If anyone can help it would be great!

you don't need to check the IEEE, also make sure you have selected the correct key index matching to your WEP key from the server

turn off push mail if you use it.

mine will not use wifi if I leave direct push on. I turn it off and all of the sudden it starts browsing on WiFi instead of EV.

Are you kidding me? That's the most inelegant solution I've ever heard of.

So far nothing has helped ~ Is the problem the "certificates?" How are all of you hooking into the WIFI? Settings?

I'd like to get this going

First WIFI and direct push will work at the same time, your Mogul can sync through your WIFI connection, no need to turn of push mail. Next, I am no expert but, here is how it works for me, turn on the WIFI switch, my Mogul finds the open router and asks me to input the password if needed. That's it I am connected, the next time I connect no need for the password, my Mogul saves if for me. If that isn't what you are seeing I would check the router first, make sure you have an open port. I don't have my home computers set up in a network so there might be something there that is causing the problem, do you need to add the Mogul to the network to connect? I wouldn't think so, someone here knows this stuff better than me, lets see what they say.

I use my WiFi all the time and the ONLY way I have been able to get it to work every time, is to turn off Direct Push.

I will notice that it still tries to activate the EV for the DP and it will use EV when trying to use data (Orb). If I do a speed test with DP on and DP off, I will see two different numbers..

I know it makes no sense,, but this is before and after a hard reset. This is because Active Sync can only run on EV/BT/IR, but not over WiFi.

This is all after keying in my WEP password and making sure my network is the one chosen and that I am closest to it....

YMMV, but this works best for me.

bitslizer 08-07-2007 09:27 AM

There's some werid preference for EV over WiFi with certain App, DP can be one of them. I remember using something else and I have to turn off EV twice to get the app to stay on wifi

MBaran 08-07-2007 09:32 PM

/\ see. I'm not crazy...

gmmx 08-07-2007 10:45 PM

how to turn OFF direct push?

i dont have EV where i am located, and i cannot get Wifi to work either. It says 'connected' and goes to 'locating' in the browser, but can never find any pages.

i try turning off the phone even, and although the wifi symbol blinks and looks happy (with the arrows and everything), nothing makes it through...

I just deleted all my email accounts, in hopes that THAT might turn DP off, but i am still clueless on how to get wifi to REALLY connect with my simple WAP (set it all the way down to DHCP, no-encryption, total vanilla for the test--and still nothing... but the laptop next to it works fine with the same settings).

so, about turning off DP?

I have a thought......

Are you restricting access to your router? This setting will only let certain MAC addresses attach. In theory only devices you specify should be able to use your network. (Of course the MAC could be spoofed...but that's a different story)

Log in to your router and check for an option like this.

I think on my netgear it's called setup access list. I can't remember specifically what it is called on other routers. But it's there. I always turn it on when I set one up for someone.

Check your router's manual about how to log on to change settings. It should be something like typing

192.168.0.1 in a web browser attached to the router with a lan cable.

usually the user is admin and the password is password.

I'm betting this is the problem.

I realize you say you are new to PPC's (I'm assuming computers in general) and I may have gone over your head a little. A little reading in your manual or online will help. I'll check beck to check up on you.

Hope this helps. :)

also do you have any data plan at all? if yes, go to start -> setting -> phone -> internet and click on get setting, then click start.

sometime my connection get messed up and would not open any pages on either EV or Wifi and that usually fix it

Mansam 08-08-2007 10:12 AM

Thanks for all the "try's" but I can get on WIFI at home on my Belkin but here at the office (Linksys) I cannot. I have checked the settings & have "unsecured" it but it still won't connect. I have Unlimited Data with my SERO account. It should automatically search for wifi/routers but mine does say available & unsecured but still won't/can't connect. It is (I assume) just like my laptop with its built in wifi ~ whenever I'm on the road my laptop pulls up what's available & will connect ~ why doesn't my Mogul do the same thing? I'm not in an EV area & it seems to automatically connect thru the 1X system by dialling the #777. Are others having problems connectiing automatically with their wifi? This is one of the main reasons why I chose this over the treo ~ If I call Tech, (after waiting for about an hour) would/could they get me fixed?

Chances are your work router has some special access requirements. It may just be a wep key or something, but it might be more strict. Where i work it is locked down so that you can't get on even with the right keys etc. there is a third party app that runs on the PC to complete the connection to the secure work wireless. I would check with your IT people at work to see if that is the case. My PPC will never be "allowed" on my work network.

EDIT: after re-reading your post it looks like you might have unsecured the office network if that is the case you can disregard the rest of this post. Another thing to check is make sure it allows "mixed mode" for B and G wireless.

Mansam 08-08-2007 12:08 PM

yep it does allow mixed mode ~ frustrating!!! I'm the one who can change the settings at my office ~ wish I could get it to work. How many of you have tried accessing your built in wifi? At work?

Chunky Monkey 08-08-2007 06:58 PM

Maybe you could try to assign the 6800 a specific IP address....and then make sure it is in the range allowed by the router. Turn off the auto assign.

It has to be something with the router. My 6800 works better than any hand held device I've had at connecting to wifi.

Can you connect with your work network with any other "new" devices...like a laptop?

ImCoKeMaN 08-08-2007 10:43 PM

Funny thing.... Just tonight i tried wifi at my house on my DDWRT router and the wireless wouldn't connect on mogul, or apache, or laptop. After screwing around for a while i rebooted the router and all was well. It seemed it wasn't using DHCP for the new wireless connections. Might wanna try that before pulling your hair out.

platniumrover 09-05-2007 02:50 PM

I think the phone has a problem with wpa. If u disable security then delete the routers settings in the mogul, then click connect it connects. I was testing it using my labtop and the mogul and Im going to try and use WPA2. But the difference in settings is the mogul wont allow you to uncheck IEEE 802.1x authentication.

OffUrRcker 12-17-2007 12:56 AM

I'm having this same problem, somebody help! My wifi connects to networks, and everything appears to be okay, but every program says it can't access the internet. PIE says page failed to display, Live Search says check your network connections.

muyoso 12-17-2007 01:15 AM

I get that problem sometimes. All I do usually is soft reset the mogul and all is well. Also, make sure that you have the wifi set to "Best performance" instead of "best battery", because the wifi is near useless unless you are sitting on top of the router when the wifi is set to power savings mode. Reboot the router and reboot your phone and all should be well.

OffUrRcker 12-22-2007 11:25 PM

muyoso, I very much doubted this would work, but I slid the slider to best performance, and VOILA! Wifi works. Thank you!
