Soft Reset vs. Cycling the power?

What's the difference between a soft reset and turning the power off and back on again?

The actions taken to do each one?

I would assume that power off shuts down each program and flushes any write buffers before turning off the power. Maybe as close to a WIndows shutdown as WM can get.

So basically the soft reset is an unorderly shutdown vs. an orderly shutdown by cycling the powers. This being the case I'm surprised that when I installed some Resco applications it asked me to do a soft reset?

I think I'll only do a soft reset if the PPC power off switch is unresponsive (ex. the PPC is hung).

Well when you do the "shut down" and then power it back up, when hold the button and the popup comes up asking if you want to, when you press yes it shuts down instantly, no "please wait while windows shuts down" bs. Kinda personally think that it wipes those buffers when it boots up considering how instant the shutdown is.
