Taskbar

Is there a way to activate items on the taskbar without using the stylus? So if there is a program running I could use the wheel or button combination or the thumbpad to activate the item?

not really, but im sure you can get a today plug-in that would allow you to do that.

WisBar will allow you to put your most often used apps into the task bar. I use the d-pad to navigate through them on my 700WX. I imagine you could do the same on your Mogul. Also, try Mobile Shell. You'll place your most used apps on a tab in the Today plug in and then navigate with your wheel or button combo

here you go - this cab has an ALT-TAB program in it (for switching between currently running programs) that you could assign to one of your hardware keys:
