Gps Questions. I've read the sticky :) Please help!

I have a vzw titan w/ the MR1 software. I'm running the Valhalla Legends GPSServer.cab w/ google maps and it works well. I tried GPS tuner and it would not find my internal gps. I am in need of the following.

1. Does anyone know of good gps software that will work for point to point use. (Example, basic outdoor garmin, no maps needed. I need to plug in gps coordinates and it give a my distance to that point.)

2. Will the valhalla legends cab work without cell reception.

3. If #2 is no, can you recommend a gps cab that will fit the bill.

I would be deeply greatful.

I've read some people use other software, but I just stick with Google maps. The maps are always up to date, has some cool features, and yes, you can enter lat/long coordinates, and it will pinpoint it. You can use those coordinates to find the travel distance from your current location, or to a destination.

As far as getting the GPS tuner to work, I don't know. Mine works, and I DEFINITELY recommend getting the aGPS fix (helps you get a GPS lock in <10 seconds.

Yeah. Stick with Google Maps. The GPS on MR1 should work without cell reception as GPS is free and works without cell tower connection on my custom ROM. I really would reccomend unlocking, using a Sprint radio, and flashing to a custom ROM. I know MR1 has wonderful battery life but a Custom ROM always beats a stock offical ROM! Ah, but you're a verizon rep, you should follow the rules and stay offical. Lol :-)

My issue is I spend time on the water and could use a basic gps program, maps are not important, just distance between points and distance to specific coordinate

Again, the search function and stickies are your friends. There are tutorials out there. You should use the kitchen. BOO pre-built ROMs. Make one in the ktichen.

You need to add that the aGPS fix requires a data connection to pull those sat locks faster.

I use GPSToday and whatever maps it uses.

richesseGPS will do what you want. its not fancy. have you ever seen the garmin gecko GPS? all it does is point you in the direction of the lat/lon you type in. its main use is geocaching. do a search i believe its a free program if it doesnt do what you want you can always delete it.

yep. its a stand alone program that only uses the GPS chip just like garmin XT. also if your having troubles getting the internal GPS to fire try HTCgps tools. its in the kitchen but you may be able to hunt down a cab for it.

Can you return the device to original software once it's unlocked. I didn't see that in the thread? if so how. I have a terrible time finding stuff in these forums even when I look so if you could give some search advise I won't be such a pest....

I have ran into 2 issues with all gps but google.

1. None seem to lock on after 5 minutes unless I have google maps running then it finds my gps but jumps all over.

2. once it stops on a gps coordinate it then tells me I am in the alaskian sea or egypt. Any Ideas? Ive used the above gps program and gps tuner 5.4. both also seem to loose lock unless google running.

Try the aGPS trick for Alltel. aGPS will probably help tons.

isn't agps mean assisted gps meaning cell phone signal assistance. The Gps one chip in the titan should be able to run in standalone mode and where I would need it cell phone service is lacking.

Yes. aGPS will get a very fast lock, but it requires a data connection. The standalone chip will lock in abou 30 seconds for me, but it will lock in about 3 seconds with aGPS.

what driver are you running? I cannot get a lock other than priming with google maps but that takes a ton of memory.

Could it be a problem with the valhalla legends gps soft I got on it. My understanding of it was that it " filled in the blanks" with the reg files from the vz nav app. can anyone confirm.

Seriously, go with a custom ROM. I am suprised you got Google Maps to work with the Server Cab and MR1...I never was able to. Flash to a Sprint Radio, Run a custom ROM and apply the aGPS hack. Oh, and I think you have to do some extra work to revert the PRI back from the MR1 as well. I got a refurb with MR1 on it but I couldn't get it to work so I called back and got another refurb that still had stock WM6 on it. That worked great...I know MR1 has wonderful battery life but I can't live with locked GPS. I am hoping someone can manage to get that great battery life on a custom ROM or in a kitchen. Even using MR1 but with unlocked GPS drivers would be cool too... just for great battery life...

I'm leaning to a cstom rom but no one can say if it will fix my issue

a custom rom will fix most if not all your issues. then you can use the HTC gps tools to prime your gps if needed. with XT and the newest update from garmin i dont need to prime with anything. just open XT and within a min i have a lock.

Seriously man, that is a no brainer. We all know how gay Verizon is with ALL of their devices. There is not a device they release that is not CRIPPLED VERY BADLY. The MR1 locked GPS down with all 3rd party apps and even with the small fix not all 3rd party apps can work. It always is in your best interest to have a custom ROM. Pre made offical ROMS from VERIZON are always awful. Sprint's offical ROMS aren't too bad but Verizon will ALWAYS cripple their devices/roms. Most of the time we're able to fix it with ROMS and software, like the Titan and Apache and Vogue. Unfortunatly for the Touch Pro the hardware is changed so we're out of luck... Anyhow with all that said dump your MR1 and go with either the kitchen or NueRom.

battery life is a major issue with my device. I cannot go back to the pre MR1 batt life (at least until they have a super cap slim batt.) What kind of battery life are people getting out of there roms?

Almost as good as MR1. I am on build 20748. I do heavy Data usage and a lot of calls and text and GPS usage. I charge up almost every night.

I have mr 1 and refuse if possible to go to a refurb. Do you know how to flash a custom rom into a titan w/the mr1 software? If anyone can give me explicit insturctions how, it would be greatly appriciated. I cannot aford to "brick a phone". Thanks

You can unlock it then flash to a Sprint ROM to get a GPS radio. Then you FLash to a custom ROM with Verizon settings. I plan on making a video soon of the entire process...

i'm awaiting the video. Not do much outdoors until february so have some time to tinker. Will I lose any functionality or stability by useing a custom rom. Believe it or not the gps is really the only issue I have and have only once done a softreset since september30th. I almost can't believe i typed it but its true.
