How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

I promise I've searched for my answer before posting! I have an xv6800 on 3.57.605.1 ROM, 3.37.75 Radio.

I've already canceled my data plan with Vz so I'm not worried about how to avoid charges.

I want to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY delete data connection from my phone. As in, a hard reset would be required to get it back (if necessary). I'm fine with deleting registry keys or renaming files...whatever it takes! I dont text, or mms, or whatever. Wifi only!

I already know how to change my user name or delete the #777 connection in "connections" - none of these work. I also tried to delete HTC Guardian, and then deleted the Vz connection in "connections" but it still came back.

Every day, at random times, I get the following error:

Data Call Failure
Error: 11
PPP Connection Error

Something in my phone is trying to connect and I want it stopped!

Please. please. please. help. Verizon's response, is that I just have to deal with it, but this popup is driving me crazy.

Well first off... welcome to the madness.

What programs do you have installed? Do you still have an Email account set up on the phone? Weather program? something is trying to auto update, and a little more info would help us out.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=45996 in the first post of this thread, the poster mentions a program he used on the mogul to kill data.

Nevermind, darren.wlsn1 posted the link to that program.

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

Thanks for the welcome Lylej2k and thanks for the program darren.wlsn1.

Since my post, I found this suggestion buried in another forum: Dial ##778 - 000000, then go to Modem, and change Preferred mode to CDMA only which will supposedly kill any data connectivity with phone. (If that is a waste of time, or worse a harmful change, let me know and I'll switch it back).

After a reset I got a new error. Error 13. Service not activated on the network. However, this time, the Vz data connection did not appear to come back in the "connections" tab. Maybe that is good news?

Sorry about not giving more info in my first post. I was hesitant to make it too long for fear no one would read it! :)

I have outlook syncing via imap with gmail, I have a weather program but it manually syncs, active sync runs almost immediately via wifi with exchange...in short I have several programs trying to hit the internet on startup. I just need them to go wifi rather than data.

I see where you're going with your question though. Find the program that is trying to update and stop it...at least until wifi can get rolling.

Now that I think about it, It may be that I only get the error when I lose connectivity with wifi, which probably means all those programs I just told you about are still trying to connect and they are causing my problem. That may me the very problem NoData is supposed to fix.

For now, I'm going to call it a night but I'll resume testing tomorrow. I'd like to see if the CDMA change makes any difference, but If the error comes back - which it has randomly done - I'll try the program you suggested and post results.

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

ok there's a program out there that was just posted recently that is supposed to automatically turn on wifi if you're in a hot spot. give me a few and I'll see if i can find it.

edit: that post is here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=45942 check it out.

As far as the epst edit, i don't know if that's a harmful change or not.

I changed my mind about sleep. This has been bugging me too much to leave a possible resolution on the table.

I soft-reset my phone to see what effect the CDMA change had. I'm attaching screenshots, but you can see that the CDMA edit successfully killed the Verizon data connection in the connections manager [connections task tab]. BUT...my wifi doesnt work now. It turns on for just a second, sees the wireless signal, and then disables itself before it can connect. :(

I'm not sure, but thay MIGHT be caused by the fact that internet is not available as an option for connection. See [advanced network mgmt] the only options are ISP and work network and I dont think either of those is for wifi.

My new problem is that wifi disconnects immediately. I click enable, and within a second or two it disables itself - despite a wireless router 2 feet away.

Do we address the wifi problem or do I TRY to reverse my changes and test the NoData program?

give me a minute to check advanced configuration tool to see if there's something there.

OK yes, there's an option to disable the data connection in Adv config. I'll find you a link.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...dvanced+config there's the program. after you install it click on menu (right soft key) select more settings, select connections and it should say Data Network Connection under connection name and something under status, mine says enabled. just click it til it says disabled.

Wifi is definitely toast. It wont stay on more than a second before disabling itself. I undid my changes and I'm trying another soft-reset.

I'm afraid I may have to hard reset if this doesnt resolve itself soon. At least I have the nodata program now which may resolve my issue.

You should be able to go back into epst and undo that change. I don't see why it wouldn't go back to how it was. try that program I linked ya to. adv.config.

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

After multiple resets and quick fingers I was able to get wifi rolling again. I hope it just stays that way!

I'm going to test the two programs you guys offered. At first glance, I'm really like Advanced Config!! I could use that with or without this problem. Adv. Config is fantastic.

I'll post back with results after I've had some time to test these two out.

Look, just go and delete the #777 connection and go into the EPST and change the pass. Only reporvisioning the device will correct the EPST and so you are safe with a hard reset. I went through this personally because for a long time I didnt have a data plan and didnt want one. Keep in mind you can also call your carrier and have them add a data block which will prevent you from connecting to them.

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

thougtht you had a vx6800...why's it dialing 777, isn't that sprints?

and why would you expect wifi to work without data? you can't not have a data plan and still use wifi..

even if the wifi is free, your phone will log your KB usage, thus vzw would see it, so I don't think that's possible.. and why would you get a mogul and not text, or use the web?? so you spent a few hundred bucks, just to make calls?

You may want to re-read the post. This is not about whether or not I get billed. I'm not worried about data charges as I already have requested and established the data block.

Also, deleting the #777 does not work because it just comes back after reset.

Regardless of whether your method works to keep me from getting billed, this post is to get my phone to stop ATTEMPTING to connect.

I see the "Thanks" button. Is there a "You Are Wrong" button?

1) Yes. Verizon ALSO uses #777
2) You most certainly CAN have wifi without data. I've done if for years. Even now, I dont have data and I still have wifi.
3) Verizon has no way to see the kb usage of a wifi connection because my traffic does not pass through their servers via their data connection.
4) That is just a really stupid question. Why would challenging my purchase of the phone EVER help me resolve an issue? Regardless, I bought this phone, because it is the ONLY phone Verizon currently offers with WIFI. (thus this discussion). I wanted a phone with WIFI because I can avoid the additional $30/month in data connection charges YOU pay and do the same thing from my phone. I have free wifi at home, at work, at school, and downtown. No matter where I am, I can text, email, gps, make free voip calls, watch videos, browse the web and more.

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

and CrazyChef, you are nuts man, I don't care what some sprint rep told you:

If you have a wifi connection you do not need sprints/vzw/att/sumdumfonco data plans - and will not pay for it - if you think you are using wiwi, but an evdo connect is active - you will pay for that.

I have vzw's data plan, but I didn't always, and what I speak is the truth - You can have a pda phone and use the wifi you already pay for - no 'data plan' needed.

side note: vzw uses 777 also...

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

So today has been pretty frustrating. I got lucky getting my wifi connected last night, but I've had no such luck today.

I go to connection manager, turn on wifi and it looks for connections. It sees my network, shows "connecting" and then before it can connect, the wifi is disabled!! We're talking milliseconds here.

I cannot think of anything I did that would cause this delay to be so short. LUCKILY, I did an SPB backup shortly after my ROM upgrade. I was able to restore everything back and my wifi is up again. :headbang:

...of course now I have to go back and restore all of my changes since the rom upgrade :angry7:

EDIT: I finished reinstalling everything...and my wifi started disabling itself again. I uninstalled NoData and the problem seems to have gone away. I didnt realize NoData killed wifi connections AS WELL as Data. Looks like I'm back to square one. My registry changes didnt fix it, and the programs kill ALL connections, not just the Vz data connection

Re: How to COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY DISABLE DATA

After getting a couple bills from sprint with data charges on them, I called and asked why I was being charged for data when I don't use it. They were actually able to tell me the time and date - but noth the content - of what was accessed. At 3:am, I am sound asleep so I wasn't using data for anything..but, my SPB mobile shell was going after tha daile weather forecast.

Anyway, this may actually answer your question for you, I just asked sprint to disable all data services on the phone except wifi. I still get the evdo icon but I do not have anymore unwanted data connections. And, I can still use wifi all I want.

Occasionally, my phone does try to dial 777 - usually when one of my gps programs connects but I just have to disable the "service not available" notification and I'm fine.

I know my problem applies to sprint, but surely Verizon can do that for you too.

Verizon can turn off data for you, but once you do that you can no longer send pic/vid messages (MMS).

I think the main problem is people associate wifi as being at a hotspot, which you would need to pay for. Problem is, a LOT of people have wifi at home...like, duh. Man. ](*,)
