Geocaching and the 6800
 

Has anyone tried geocaching with the 6800? I use the GPS functionality for door to door travel a lot and it works perfectly, but I can't find a good solution for geocaching. If you've tried this and don't mind sharing, let me know what software you use and your experience with it.

Try TurboGPS. It works fairly well and has some features that are handy for geocaching.

I use geoscout you can get it from navstation.co.uk

It is a very usefull program everything that you could get on the geocaching webpage is available through the program.

My first 40 finds were with my 6800 using Beeline.......I found it to be the best for me. It accepts your GPX files from GeoCaching.com too!

I'll reply to everyone at once:

TomTom, Street Atlas USA, MS Trips and Maps (or whatever its called) all do the same thing, but aren't very good at getting you to a pinpoint location.

I tried TurboGPS, but the only way I could get coordinates into it was by typing them in. That isn't very practical with geocaching.

I plan on giving BeelineGPS another try. I tried it a couple of times, but it really didn't get my motor running. I does seem to be the most viable option.

I tried Geoscout and couldn't get it to retrieve any Cache data. I left my phone on the charger with Geoscout running all night and it downloaded caches right and left, but when I went to try and access one of them there were none there. I may try it again.

I also tried something called Smache, but it was too buggy.

I guess I'm not as lacking as I thought. I thought that I had missed the golden egg, but I guess it isn't laid yet. I'll keep searching, but I'm still open for suggestions.

I still think the best app for general geocaching on a smart phone is CacheMate it can be found here http://www.smittyware.com/ppc/cachemate/
and has a free trial where you are limited to 10 Caches in the database.The full version is only $8.It stores all of the geocache information and can give you distance and direction to a cache with a screen like most of the handheld GPS units.I dont really use it as much now that I have the new Garmin but I still reinstall it everytime I flash my phone.

We've been caching since April with Geoscout and TT7 and having no troubles. TT gets us to the area and Geoscout to the cache. For Multi's, I tend to use RichesseGPS as its easier to enter the coordinates on the fly in it than in Geoscout (and its free). Geoscout has a free trial (as does Cachemate) so I'd try both; I did and liked Geoscout but YMMV... Oh, and POI Edit 2007 will generate the TT POI files easily from the pocket query from Geocaching.com and its free as well. We're The Unpleasables on Groundspeak if you want to look us up!

GPS Tuner is another program that is good for Geocaching. You might wanna take a look at that one.

I don't use the xv6800 as a GPS when caching, as I prefer a Garmin 60cxv. However, I do use the xv6800 to go paperless.

Create a bookmark of caches, create a .gpx from it, and run the GPX through GPX Spinner. Spinner will create a set of .htm files with all of your caches, hints, etc, and give you a pretty hefty finding and sorting capability. Copy that set of .htm files to the xv6800, open in Pocket IE (or the browser of your choice), and you're golden!

I use iSilo, which does the same thing. I've been using it for a long time. I used to use a Palm and "upgraded" to a PPC/Phone when the Palm bit the dust. I use a Magellan Explorist 500 to cache with, but I was hoping to get to one device. With the Palm and the GPS, I've been paperless for quite some time and if I can find the right caching program, I can be paperless with a single gadget. I really don't forsee getting there because the Explorist is just too handy. The main advantage to it is I can find a cache and then have it route me by road to the next one and then switch to point to point routing and go directly to the cache. I haven't found anything that will allow road routes and geocaching on the PPC at the same time. I guess I'll just keep looking for the magic bullet.
