Sprint Mogul GPS works in Europe!

Details posted in the GPS thread stickied at the top of the forum. I'm just posting here as it's been discussed many times in the past and I didn't want interested people to miss the discussion.

It's standalone GPS. It should work ANYWHERE in the world that you can get a GPS signal.

You would think, but if you check earlier in the GPS thread you will see that it wasn't the case. Earlier roms would fail to lock despite being set to scan all night. I did it myself on my last trip to Germany.

Even now, it takes a VERY long time to get a lock relative to a stand alone GPS unit doing a cold start. The current "driver" (I'm not sure if it's in the GPS chip, firmware, or ROM driver) is quite slow in getting a lock when there is no cell info to assist it. Using VisualGPS you can see it "see" sat after sat with great signal strength, but it takes forever before it will lock a sat. It also doesn't seem to use the list of available sats at a given time to reduce the possible solution space to speed the lock. My old Holux unit would cold lock significantly faster. Instead, this unit almost seems to do a brute force solution on all but hot boots.

So, it's better than it was since it actually works, but it's not great.

It never worked for me over a month last June. I am going back next week and am not even going to try the internal GPS. I used my old Holux 1200.

If you've got the updated radio please give it a try to get a confirmation from another person (in Europe). I'd be interested if you run into any issues as well. I would agree though that the lock time is such that if you have a convenient bluetooth GPS that will lock faster it's much more useful. For me it was more of an excercise in getting it working from a technical standpoint. Plus I figured I'd run Navizon while I'm over here. :)
