A few other things to try:

Disable the suggestions as you type.
Kill all the running programs.
Clear all your text messages
Do a hard reset
Flash a no2chem ROM (leaner yet)
Look around for more speed tweaks.

I am having the same problem. My phone has been working fine for about 6 months now. then suddenly this past weekend it started acting extremely sluggish. Some things work fine, like they always have. Solitaire is fine. I can bring up the phone just like before too, but if I click call history it takes forever to come up. Contacts is impossible. I can read text messages ok when they first appear, but if I click on text messages and try to open one up, it takes forever. If the phone rings, I can answer it, and I can talk, but the screen seems frozen so I can't access the keypad or other options while in a call.

I did delete extra files, all old text messages, and uninstalled some software I no longer needed. This did not help.

Backup your data and hard reset the phone.....should solve any problems you are having.....

make sure that the htc today screen task manager is not set to kill everything by tapping x. the phone was originally designed to run some things in the background (your common programs), but the problem is that it was running EVERYTHING in the background. if you set your phone to 'hold to kill' (or whatever it is called), rather than tap, the programs you use often can run in the background and won't take forever to open.

similarly, if you have it set at 'hold to kill' (which is what is defaulted), you may have four hundred things running in the background if you are only tapping the button.

i would look at these things first.

Mine did the exact same thing at like 5:30 this past friday. just out of the blue I couldn't use file explorer, read my text messages, view contacts, or even answer calls it was so sluggish It would ring once and I missed the call. I just got fed up and reset the phone. thank got for having exchange and having all my contacts only like 10 minutes of down time.

You know, I just had to finally hard reset and this fixed for me :D
it seemed to be triggered by actually txting messages, then my text would go black and look like i am typing blanks. and the phone is sloooooooooooow. And also still had the phone miss notifications such as txts.

I tried many times restoring certain things from back up but gave up on that, it was always revert back to crap.

So slowly I am installing things back onto the phone.

same thing has happened to me starting yesterday. It freezes when I slide it open, and whenever i start typing with the keyboard it types a few letters than jjust freezes
