Internet Sharing

Hi was wonderig when you connect your phone through intermet sharing how fast is it mine says 10 Mbps is that the speed or should it be faster

arparent 07-03-2008 12:58 AM

Re: Internet Sharing

Your computer says 10 mbps because that's the speed between your pc and the phone. To determine your internet speed, go to www.speedtest.net This will show your true internet speed.

Re: Internet Sharing

Not great, do you have an EVDO signal?

Re: Internet Sharing

with evdo rev 1 i got 1758 kbps down and 485 kbps up while internet sharing on my desktop so 574 down seems kinda low

Darkjedi 07-03-2008 01:46 AM

Re: Internet Sharing

My EVDO speed test via pdanet is in my signature. 574 is definitely on the low end though which probably means you aren't downloading at EVDO speeds.

Re: Internet Sharing

Next to your signal indicator on your today screen you should see either an "Ev" or "1X"... which do you see?

KINYA 07-03-2008 03:10 AM

Re: Internet Sharing

it says evdo and I was told I was in a rev.A area

Re: Internet Sharing

Have you heard of Enabling Rev-A with the new ROM? TRUST me! i "Enabled" it, and i see a MAJOR difference in upload/ download speeds! ##778# you'll need your MSL

Re: Internet Sharing

Just so you don't feel too bad, here's my speed I just measured today -- and I am in an EVDO Rev-A area.

Re: Internet Sharing

I have a lot of problems connecting through internet connection sharing. When I am tethered through USB I end up dropping the connection like every five minutes. I have always had this problem with every rom I have had. If I use my 6800 with the WMWIFIrouter my connection is definately more stable but it sucks down the battery so quickly. I can even plug my phone into the charger and the battery will still get sucked down faster than it can be recharged. Is there anything that I can do to make my internet connection sharing more stable through USB?. I have checked out the PPST and the EVDO is on the proper setting (Enabled). I have tried doing speed tests (speedtest.net) and I get a download speed of 625kbs and upload of 325kbs indictive of RevA. I just don't understand, please help!

Re: Internet Sharing

thats just what i did and i see a much bigger difference. PPl say it didnt make a difference, but i saw it. I didnt see a difference on my phones browser, but using Internet Sharing i DEFINATELY saw the difference when i enabled it! But hey, if you want a stable connection just dont touch the phone or USB cable AT ALL while it says "Connected" i dont touch it, and says on for hours. Once i nudge the phone, pick it up, move the cable etc it throws the connection off. I just lay it flat and leave the stylus out in case i need to use it while connecting etc. Be gentle once its connected and your set to go!

Re: Internet Sharing

Has anyone confirmed how to prevent data charges for tethering using the new ROM? I know to change the "Phone as Modem" entry to "Sprint PCS" to force it to use the right connection or down right delete it to restore the menu, but the "Extension=RILPhone.dll" extension is different. It now points to a "ISExt.dll" or something like that.

Re: Internet Sharing

I'm a bit skeptical myself, I haven't tethered yet extensivley. I'm waiting for a full billing cycle to pass and see if anyone reports charges, lol.

sprint_2007 07-04-2008 03:06 PM

Re: Internet Sharing

ha ha no no ones going to get charged...if you pass over theyre not going to do anything. BUT, if you go over extensively for 2 months in advance, you'll receive a phone call from Sprint. Pretty much a slap in the hand lol

arparent 07-04-2008 03:17 PM

Re: Internet Sharing

I know, I know. I just have no reason to tether that frequently.

rdd0512 07-05-2008 02:16 AM

Re: Internet Sharing

i use tethering alot through my laptop and i get decent speeds (see sig line) i keep checking my usage on sprint . com and im still at like 3 million kb (3 gigs) it will be really hard to go over 5 gigs.

Re: Internet Sharing

I only average about 1GiB a month of data usage. I'm not so much worried about going over the limit as I am about any changes to ICS that could allow Sprint to tell whether the connection is being shared to a PC. Just overly paranoid I guess. Why Sprint cares how the data connection is used if it's unlimited (read=5GiB/Mo) is beyone me, let alone how they think they can limit our usage of a device that belongs to us. It'd be like telling someone they can only use their DVD Burner to READ DVDs and not burn.
