Problem With Mobile 6.1 and Active Sync

I recently upgraded my mogul to Windows Mobile 6.1 and when I plug in my phone to my computer via USB it tries to create a different mobile device rather than use the one I have been using. I changed the device ID under settings>phone>device ID to the name matching on the active sync program and it still tries to create a new account. If anybody could help me solve this problem that would be greatly appreciated because all my contacts are in that and it would take forever to ask everybody for their number again. Edit: oh and also I tried to install the HTC Home plugin vers. 2.1 but it kept freezing up my phone on boot-up. Is the home plug-in compatible with windows mobile 6.1?
