Internet Connection Sharing with Vista

Hi all - I am new to the PPC world and am confused on this one. I have searched other forums but can't seem to find one close enought to what I am stuck on. I have the HTC Mogul from Sprint. I am trying to use the phone as my modem for internet with two different laptops, one personal, one work. My personal one is an XP SP2 machine and the internet sharing works perfectly on it. On the Vista one I can't get it to work at all. Vista recognizes my device, when I go to start Internet Sharing on my device, I tap connect, it starts to dial out, vista "dings" acknowleding something is going on but then everytime my call to Sprint #777 fails and give me that my username may be incorrect and to try again later. Any ideas/suggestions on this or is there a forum that already has this topic that I am just completely missing?

Any ideas would be great!

You need to:
1. stop activesync if it's running.
2. start ICS and then click connect.

It will say something like waiting for USB connection.

THEN,
3 Plug the usb cable into your laptop.

Vista should detect a new network connection and 'identify' it (negotiate your IP address).

Then you should be good to go. The key is starting ICS, THEN connecting to your laptop.

Same here, does anyone have any ideas? It's local only and I can't get outside to the internet.

Try enabling the advanced check box under USB To PC connection.

Tried that before. Thanks though :???: Side note: PDAnet does work fine, but I'd rather use ICS.

Use MemMaid or a different registry editor and make the following reg changes. You can find a reg edit app in the Commonly requested & popular software.

InternetSharing
Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing]
Then Delete "Extension"="rilphone.dll" or "Extension"="isext.dll
then change "MaxCMCon.... from 1 to 0..
MaxCMCon might be 0 already if so its cool.

Long shot here but,,,,,,
Maybe try to connect to PIE first so you already have a connection established with #777 before you start the Interweb Sharing. I swear I'm the only person on the Geeks who hasn't had a problem with Vista. :^)

Do you have the Phone As Modem plan on your account? Phone As Modem is a separate plan and has an extra cost to it - if you don't have that plan, you'll get a username error from the network.

The PAM plan is $39.99 per month, and it replaces your Power Vision plan... so if you pay $20 for unlimited net now, that cost will go from $20 to $39.99.

If you have the Simply Everything plan, Phone As Modem doesn't work with it yet. It will be available for Simply Everything customers on June 15, and is an extra $15 per month.

Hope that helps.

I tether my laptop through my PPC and I have the Simply Everything plan and I don't have PAM. Also I don't get error 67, either do 100s of other people.

Re: Internet Connection Sharing with Vista

PAM is not yet part of Simply Everything, and always has an additional cost to it. If you're not paying any additional cost, definitely don't announce that too much.

If Sprint finds out, they'll block your access.

Sorry its not a secret. Search Mogul tethering.
So whats up with the 5gb data cap? Sprint 5GB internet cap

Re: Internet Connection Sharing with Vista

Interesting. Well, I was able to use ICS before without an issue.

Re: Internet Connection Sharing with Vista

I haven't really kept up on what the community is doing when it comes to using certain services.

However, I can say that this issue will probably end up like the age-old picture mail disaster - they'll start blocking PAM access from those who don't have the plan before too long.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened next month when they reconfigure the service to work with Simply Everything.

I can't say what'll happen for sure, but I can say with absolute certainty that if you don't have a PAM plan on your account, you shouldn't be able to access it, and it's likely they'll catch on eventually.

But either way, might as well enjoy it while it lasts :)

EDIT: Our department has not been updated on the 5GB data cap. It's news to me. I plan to find out more when I go back into work on Saturday - since they usually let us know about stuff like this well in advance if it actually happening. Also, I forgot to mention, that PAM is only effective for those using the Sprint network... if you're using WiFi, that's not Sprint, and you can always do that at no cost.
