GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
ok i have been going back an forth between this forum a xda-developers in multiple threads trying to figure out how to get GPS installed on my Sprint Mogul. i can not believe how ridiculously hard it is just to have a gps app installed and running properly. how is the average joe suppose to utilize this feature? i fancy my self as being tech savy, resourceful and patient BUT this is testing my limits... anyway i have iGuidance and the astrolauncher on my 6.1 wm rom build with kitchen. i also downloaded gps viewer. i think i still need gps gate but i am at my wits end with this crap. i just want it to work! i haven't been able to ope iguidance yet because im missing maps and iguidance launcher gives me an error about not being signed. i was informed that this is because i am missing the .net stuff but i have installed the latest version of .net but i still get the error.
i want to know if someone is willing to walk me through (in plain english) how to get this crap working? every thread i find goes on and on about stuff but never explains it well enough for an average person (me) to understand what and why im doing what im doing. this is a lot to ask to receive nothing in return but maybe some one out there was in my shoes and is willing to shoot a bullet list of steps.. i dunno please don't link me to the GPS threads, i have read them all and everyone i read i become more confused and frustrated. |
Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
Um...I'm not sure why it's been hard. You flash the latest Sprint ROM, install Google Maps or Live Search. Tell it to use GPS and there ya go.

Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
yea awesome! i'm using i guidance but thanks anyway

Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
This is how I do it, but I use GPSgate though.
I'd run GPSgate to let it sit on the tray. Then launch google maps to get a fix (somehow google maps can get a fix within 2 seconds cold or hot). then exit google maps. but before you exit google maps, make sure that GPSgate icon on the tray is green. Then I run iguidance. Done |
Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
garmin runs without priming... hard to beat for ease of use.
if i were trying to run a gps program that needed priming i would use baf gps toggle. runs from today screen and primes gps FAST. good luck. |

and you are getting the 'not signed' error ? my advice is to uninstall iGuidance, then re-install it. especially if you've installed .NET after your first attempt. if still no go, then re-flash in the kitchen making sure you cook in .NET from the start. i think thats part of the frustration.. once we get past this part and you a nice proper flash, the rest is cake. yes, you need GPSgate if you want to use iguidance. you also need Mortscript and the custom launcher Talyn built.. sounds crazy but dont sweat it. we can get you there, then you'll look back and laugh. post back whats up, as well as the version of iguidance you have? |
Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
I am running iGuidance 3.0.1. The complications are due to the Mogul internal GPS requirement to be "primed" and the iGuidance inability to read intermediate ports in Windows Mobile.
I do not use the launchers and Mortscript, and I have a multi-step, but easy to understand method of running it. First, you must have a GPS-enabled Rom and have iGuidance and its maps properly installed. Then download and install Wififofum and GPSProxy; both are free to use non-commercially. Each time you run the application is a 3 step process, but you only need to do the setups the first time. 1. Run Wififofum to activate the internal GPS; set to use COM4 2. Run GPSProxy to avoid the intermediate port problem with iGuidance; set it to read COM4 and mirror output to COM2 3. Run iGuidance; set to use COM2 A script to automate this might be easier, but I would rather see what is happening and make sure that each step is effective before starting the next step. I wait until Wififofum has a satellite lock before running GPSProxy and start GPSProxy outputting before running iGuidance. |

I'm using GPSGate instead, and that works fine. It's not free, though. |

As mentioned in a previous post on your thread here. Did you install a "full" copy of iguidance, or just the launcher in the kitchen? That's the first step, if you don't have a full copy installed, it's not gonna run, since the kitchen only includes a "primer" for the GPS, not the full install. The Kitchen only includes Google Maps and Windows Live Search. Which just work, no priming needed. I've also gotten GPS Today and Garmin XT Mobile to work, without priming. Just installed it and ran it. -CC |

it must be on the storage card, and it must be installed via ActiveSync, through your PC.. it's still not super clear to us that you even have this actual program.. the iguidance LAUNCHER program, will NOT launch iguidance. it's just a 'primer' app, to open your gps chip.. I will HAPPILY walk you through each and every step.. you need iGuidance 4.0.. full version.. you need it on your computer. you then need to install it from your computer, via active sync.. can you confirm this is what you have done so far.. this is step 1.. forget about the 'launchers' and gps gate etc... for right now.. first thing is the actual program installation, and it's not real clear that we have that bit ironed out yet........ anticipating your answer of a complete and proper installation of the actual iGuidance program (since you do mention above it thinks your in NoCal).. Next is 'Holux GPS Viewer', this is the pimer apps that will open your GPS chip.. do you have it installed.. forget the Astro GPS Launcher, or any form of it.. Holux is the easiest and most foolproof. You can download the holux program right http://www.hevis.com.hk/download/GpsViewer1.5.zip install that from your PC, through Active Sync, to your device.. then run it.. in the setup screen, change the port to COM4.. then press the 'Open GPS' button.. after a short bit, you will get a lock (the Sat Bars will turn blue).. THEN, open the iGuidance program.. NOT an iGuidance launcher.. the program iguidance itself.. configure the setting in iGuidance to look for COM4 for it's GPS feed.. you THEN should have your current location displayed on screen.. and iGuidance will be working.. do all this first, to make sure everything to this point is working as it should, THEN we'll talk about GPS Gate, which is what you need for iGuidance to continue to re-map your location when your on the move.. |

No boxes checked on any of the three tabs Menu>Extensions GPS Provider: NMEA Input Configure: GPS COM Port COM4, Mirror GPS Input to Output Port checked, COM2 Extensions: GPS Fix Info, GPS Satellite Info Menu>VirtualComPorts COM2 iGuidance is set to COM2 and 4800 baud Make sure you run the programs in the right order; start Wififofum, wait until it locks at least 3 satellites; leave it running and start GPSProxy, hit Start and wait until you see GPS data; leave it running and start iGuidance edit: Quote:
See the above for the GPSProxy settings. |
Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
ok ok, i might be getting somewhere FINALY. i have i guidance4 installed on my phone as well as the holux prog. i was able to get holox to get a signal and then i ran iguidance and it did in fact know where i was so i think i got that part of it down...
so the nest step is to get gpsgate, or gpsproxy to get i guidance to update correctly? |

As far as all the other programs - (Garmin etc..) - it's really all personal preference. Yes, Garmin has it's OWN primer, and you don't have to go through all this crap to get it running.. i used it for about a week.. it worked well.. but i just didn't love it. then tried iGuidance and i think it is FAR superior.. the voice turn by turn with street names, is just awesome.. |
Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
iguidance was ok... tomtom worked better IMO.... Garmin worked flawlessly out of the box.. when I used iguidance.. I never got it to speak the street names.. so I ditched it in prefereance to either garmin or tomtom.. (garmin has the awsome find the food feature searchign for restarunants and so on) hopefully with newer renditions of pdagps software they will accually send the proper commands to the gps chip and prime the chip like the garmin does... but... as nickles says.. gps software is really a mater of prefereance.. and what features are important to you.. and what you like... garmin will install only the maps you need.. tomtop needs to have all the maps.. or entire mapsets.... I dont rember if iguidance needed the entire mapset as well or not.. all of tem require hefyt space on your sd card... tomtom needs 1gb... garmin can use as little as 200mb dependant on the maps in stalled (reminicence of mappoppolious) so far.. all have voice directions.. but I havent found one that will speak the street names yet...

Re: GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?
I gave up on trying to use the internal GPS with Iguidance. I have Version 4 and did not want to go through all the hoops to get it working so I just bought a Holux BT GPS reciever which is about the size of a small box of matches, paired it up and Iguidance works fine. Yes, its not the perfect solution but I can dock my mogul in its holder on my dash, and sick the reciever in the corner of my dash/windshield and everything works.
Does really good on my motorcycle too. I have a small velcro pad under my fairing that I stick the reciever to and a holder for my mogul. David |
GPSPROXY vs. GPSGATE
Hey Everyone,
I have iGuidance up and running on my Mogul. I am using GPSGATE and HOLUX VIEWER. My only question now is can I replace GPSGATE (I am using the trial version now) with the GPSPROXY program (Free)? If so, can someone advise of the settings I need to make it work with HOLUX and iGuidance? Is their a difference between GPSGATE and GPSPROXY? Is one better than another? I don't want to seem cheap...I WILL pay for the GPSGAT program if that's my best bet. BUT it's a bonus if I can just use GPSPROXY for free. Thanks for the help in advance. |
