A program that would relay web data or web picture onto the today screen.
To be used for:
Radar Maps...
TraficCams, triptimes, etc... like from http://myganav.com/www/pda/
or even- any updated pic, webcam snapshots, etc..

Ideally have ability to switch easily between multiple preset webpages... Ability to set update interval times is a must.


A "spinoff" from these thoughts... a rotator for the UL cube:
Ability to set it to rotate every ___ seconds. That way you could set the above mentioned webpages(etc) to the UL.
So in times of handfree operation such as while your phone is mounted on dash/vent while driving (or in a cradle at your desk) it will auto flip between all the things you need to see for the day...
The weather, the Traffic cams, the trip times, stock charts, the news, current local pollen count charts, current agenda list, or whatever combo config is chosen.

Just to add to a future enhancement... potentially a mode choice which a person would use like this...

mode selection 1: I'd type "Driving Route1"

mode selection 4: "Summary"
and set it up with one from Route1... "triptime",
and also the "triptime" from Route2,
and maybe a couple from "Maps/Radars", along with my current agenda/task list,

I would use "Summary" mode as my default, and then switch to mode "Route1" (or Route2) to see a continuous update of my route.
This would also be a magnificent way of demonstrating the phone's capabilities as well.

Other ideas of use are, security cam snapshots, or montoring stock charts such as http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/b?s=GOOG, or tracking people, or basically anything you might want to glance on a regular basis.

Just my thoughts... is there anyone else liking this idea?

2. It is found or created....but deemed useless or unimportant.
3. The importance or practicality is realized... but the wrong person is given credit.

rather straightforward.... the first line is the initial idea, the rest is an expansion of that idea.

Actually I can understand that some might not know that UL is an app called "Universal Laucher". It has ability to have a section of screen that rotates upon sliding your finger. I want to put it on a set timer. I also want to be able to have a radar image on it. (as well as all the above). I had just elaborated on potential usage.

Current local pollen count? Really? There's data available for that? Color me ignorant.

Actually I think the overall concept has great potential. I definitely like the thought of information auto-rotating on my today screen. Fire up the brain cells and make this a reality! It think the possibilites are pretty much endless if this could be done.

that's the parallel I had in mind. ;-)


Now if we could just get a screenshot mockup of a rotating cube with some of what i described that would be great...

I mean come on, we think our phones are good conversation pieces and all but they arent exactly screaming "hey look at this"... but an action packed rotater screen could make it a bit more futuristic/interesting.

I'd call it the "rotato"... It's pealing the dirty old today skin off the potato-like phone and rotating ...similar to the Rotato device "seen on tv"...

not exactly...pointcast pushed content, where-as I'm wanting to pull the content. Not any different than the weather apps we are using. Just envisioning pulling any predefined linked image/page at a predefined interval.
With the bonus of having it rotate/switch out. This should be rather feasible.

lol, just has taken me too long to get started with this, so passing the torch.

Dont let the lack of response on this fool you, soon everyone will want to give it a spin.
Once a demo is displayed with a setup something like I mentioned then it'll quickly be a hit. Without the pics it doesnt entirely get the message across..

yeah people just arent grasping the potential yet but thas cool... kinda reminds me of the hoverboard from back to the future II, one of the coolest products never to make it to the real world... wanted one for my 12th birthday and my parents searched hi and low to find me one only to discover it didnt exist... never really got over the sting of that growing up:(... group hug? :mrgreen:

haha... Matel received hundreds of calls about the hoverboard because Doc in B2F said something to the effect that they had been out for years and companies just didnt want to release them.
Nice analogy though... MagLev trains can do it, you would think there would be some sort of special floor&board combo that could do it. The existing AirBoards are just too bulky, but a MagLev board on a special foundation seems within reason..although rather dangerous.

This reminds me a lot of the Active Desktop product that MicroSoft unsuccessfully tried to roll out in the Win98 days...allowing you to embed dynamic web content on your desktop. The idea was good, but the execution was too resource intensive. Nowadays there's ajax widgets. Do I have the general concept?

yeah that's a similar concept.. just this will be a bit better. There's a big difference of course in what most people want on their desktop screen vs what they want to see (and show off) on their phone.
Also I dont believe this will be resource intensive...It really shouldnt take anymore than what it does to open a number of tabs in IE.

The problem will likely be on users linking to things that are not pda friendly.

It would be nice to know if anyone is in fact working on it... and there may be people that think that if it's not their idea then its a bad/unworthy idea.
I've long had a knack for picking winners...but it would be trivial to speak about here. Just let it be known that I back this with confidence.
Hey I know it's not going to change the world... rather, just the way we look at our phones.

i like the idea, but what about not using the today screen at all?

i'm thinking of something like s2u2 but with plugins.

turn on your phone, it is still locked but it shows the time or whatever plugin you want as the default. you set it to either fade to the next plugin after n seconds, or press up/down to manually change plugins (since right unlocks the phone if you have the dpad set to "on"). add as few or as many as you want. all screens will still have the feature to unlock at the bottom.

My initial idea on this was to just have a single linked webpage item.
That was just to start the next pieces to put it all together.
Once I discovered UL, it seemed to fit nicely as what should be a relatively easy method to switch out the webpages. UL already allows for all other plugins, so that became a moot point.

Also, if UL can be tapped into for autorotation, then it's just a matter of setting it up with functions similar to s2u2, therefore doing away with s2u2.

Then again, this is just my ideal - others may vary - and in the end it's whatever that is most feasible to program.
