Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
Hello everybody,
I am new here. I just upgraded to the HTC Mogul from my Treo 700p that I had for 2 years. Its quite a bit different... lol I am curious what is the first thing you guys did when you get your mogul? What is the most popular rom out? Or what would you recommend for somebody that is technically inclined, but is just overwhelmed by the amount of information out there and the amount of different roms available. I just got my mogul about an hour ago, currently its running stock rom 2.17.651.0 dated 11/18/07. I do appreciate your feedback! Thanks again! |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
I would recommend to upgrade to the 3.35 for the sake of Rev A and GPS. Then after that its free game as far as what programs you want to install. Everyone is different, with their likes/dislikes. Dont forget to search just to read different opinions about software, programs, rom installation, etc. Have fun with this beast.

Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
Being active in the forums is by far the best thing to do when starting your journey to 6800 jedi master status. :)
I suggest: upgrading rom to 3.35 installing the flash video bundle installing a gps app setting up preferences in the phone. (clear type, screen brightness, camera settings, caller id, etc.) setting up bookmarks in PIE installing htc home today screen plugin find a cool theme ( i suggest allblack.tsk) test evdo speed at dslreports setup adhoc network with wmwifirouter turn off incoming beams setup email pop or hotmail participate in the forums! Welcome aboard! :) |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
You guys rock! That is exactly what I was looking for.
I picked up my mogul on my lunch break, once I get home and I can hook it up I gonna see what this beast is capable of. I can't wait to test out the GPS with google maps. And wmwifirouter is going to be awesome to use at work. Time to start brining my laptop in! Thanks again guys! |

Welcome to the site!
Start with the stickies at the top of the Titan and then other forums. You'll find tons of great info there. There is an incredible amount of information on this site. Just search for whatever your looking for, and if you can't find it then post. You'll find lots of help in here. Try this for all those "must have" apps: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17859 |

Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
First thing I did, honestly, was get pissed, because it was so much more complicated to get simple things done in Windows Mobile. (I'm coming from a Palm OS Treo 650. (Palm IIIc+Palm M100, RIP, lol)
I am very happy with EVDO (3G), and the ability to stream music and video (though you can do that with palm too, just not out of the box like with the Mogul). I'm happy with the GPS as well. But honestly I was frustrated up until I read this article by HobbesIsReal 5 minutes ago, lol! http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/ho...martphone.html I would suggest installing HTC Home (In place of SPB Mobile Shell), HTC Home Customizer, Q Menu (In place of Wisbar), Oxios Memory, MemMaid (the only pay app I'll suggest). After that, customize your buttons, and set up your HTC Home and Q Menu. With that, you can get to things as fast as on a Palm! And now I'm VERY happy with my Mogul! Granted , the OS is not as snappy as a Palm (probably has to do with the memory), but this phone still rocks! ~Jeans |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
You may want to look at flashing to a custom rom. There are a few different choices under the HTC Titan Upgrades forum. Personally I use No2Chem's. Another popular choice is DCD's. An advantage of a custom rom is windows mobile 6.1. It handles memory different and gives threaded text messaging. Custom roms also remove a lot of the bloatware Sprint installs by default. If you find that you prefer stock, it is easy to go back.

Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
First thing I did was buy the largest SDCard I could find (8GB at the time) to install most of the software onto instead of the device memory.
The device memory is reserved only for programs that require being on the device and/or are programs useful to maintaining and troubleshooting the device itself. All my networking and utility apps are on the device... But all the games, Navigation and Applications are installed on the card. I would have to say S2U2 is a must have program. Make sure to enable Caller ID on it! I also use Weather Panel which so far is the best weather app I have found. SPB Phone Suite is also a handy little app. It allowed me to assign the Comm Manager button to something else since SPB PS has it's own comm manager in it. PDANet is a must have for me only because I live in a rural area and many of my clients only have dialup access available. When I work on thier systems I can get high speed (EVDO RevA) speed on my laptop to download files they need installed. (Note you better have unlimited data if you plan on using this!) I also highly suggest Resco Tools (Explorer and Registry editor most important) as it works slightly better for navigating the file system than Total Commander and has more capability that the stock File Explorer. |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
i'd start by installing all the SPB programs (mobile shell, diary, weather, backup, pocket plus). they work the best for me and were free. Then memmaid, todaytime, resco photo viewer & keyboard pro. the new opera 9 beta is the best internet browser by far and is a must. for games i would download all the realdice casino games and google for the codes. lastly find a torrent for the lastest tomtom navigator. you should be set after you customize it a little.

But seriously, everyone here should go to http://www.skyfire.com and signup for the Beta. That browser is damn fast and well done. I used to use Opera until I got Skyfire. Google Maps and/or Live Search are (actually) free and will do good for the GPS. |

Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
Well, I ended up mucking mine up a few times requiring a hard reset or 3 to fix the glitches. Some of the software you're going to find and try won't always restore the origional settings when it's uninstalled. Or, it may not be immediately apparent which app is giving you a problem. So I recommend installing the trial for either Sprite Backup or SPB backup (You'll find fans of both here) and making regular backups of your device as you install and try new software. Then you have something to revert to if there're problems.
First site I found for apps was http://www.aximsite.com/boards/appli...ing-point.html It has a lot of freeware/shareware. Stay away from NoteM, that was my first personal nightmare... It breaks the file associations with WMP. They can be fixed with registry editors, but that takes research I hadn't done yet. I like Resco registry editor for edits on the device, and Mobile Registry Editor for edits via activesync. I also recommend My Mobiler for RC of your handheld. (sometimes it's just easier to use a full keyboard.) Read reviews before you install, it can save a lot of headaches. And be aware, that while a lot of today apps can be flashy, they can also suck up a lot of prescious memory. (SPB Mobile Shell, SPB Pocket PC and Resco Today plugin immediately come to mind as memory hogs on the today screen.) Additionally, check reviews and/or install notes to see if an app can be installed on the storage card, or needs to be on the device. And note that even if an app can be installed on the card, if it needs fast access; a today app, ringer, calander, event-triggered, it will be slower on the card. Go slow, make sure you have a recent backup, and have fun with it. This is a great site for help and questions, just remember the cardinal rule and *search first*. |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
LED killer 3.1 is definitely the first thing i ever install. after that it's usually threaded sms, resco (payfor program), tcpmp + flashvideo bundle, and weather panel. i used to use pocketcm, but since i've reloaded ROMs over and over lately, i haven't gotten back into loading everything back on completely. s2u2 is nice.
some people dig pointui, or cube setups. check out xda developers for many of those |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
Well I do appreciate all the advise guys. What I did was
Upgraded to 3.35 (no threaded sms? wtf no way) I played with pocketCM and codys threaded, just too buggy. Then installed No2Chems rev.5060 rom (threaded is very nice btw) google maps then the wisebar advance desktop for torx iphone theme and the tcpmp and flashvideo bundle And I flashed the rom to No2Chems with no questions asked on the forums, and no errors! yay! :headbang: |
Re: Whats the first things you did when you got your mogul.
I took the deliberate approach, when I first got my Mogul
1. Got familar with the phone before I didn't anything. 2. Read as much as I could at PPCGeeks and XDA-Developers Titan forums. 3. Read some more 4. Decided what ROM/applications I really wanted. 5. Read some more 6. Did my first ROM upgrade and tested it out. 7. Read some more 8. Decided what I liked and what I didn't like, and slowly added. When the kitchen came out I went back and repeated steps 4-8. They key for me was to add stuff slowly and make sure it works instead of adding EVERYTHING at once. |
