As a rule of thumb, Windows Smartphones usually don't have a touchscreen (usually), where PocketPCs do.

Lol, aint that the truth for a noobie around here. I remember my first day I had the same question, and I believe its totally valid. I saw 15 dloads for the same piece of software, and I didn't even know what version of WM I was running!! Its a big, long, learning experience, but definitely worth the effort.

um... avast for win mo does WHAT exactly?

Don't tell me you're afraid of a PDA virus??

This was a topic of discussion at a mobile conference a couple of years ago, but I don't recall which one (3gsm maybe?). Remember what a Virus is for a moment- malicious code that is often run without the user's knowledge. You don't just "get it" by itself, someone has to write something specifically for your type of system, and you have to do something to get it, such as download and run a program from a questionable source.
Putting a virus scan on your PDA is like putting one on a Linux machine... you really don't have to worry about it because its very rare that someone would bother writing a virus for your platform. In general, windows PC's running internet explorer are the most susceptible to attacks because it is the most common computing platform. But code written for Windows PC does not run on Windows CE/ Windows mobile, which means that someone would have to write a virus specifically for your phone.

The conference said that Nokia S60 Symbian systems were actually susceptible to virus attacks that could be invoked by accepting a bluetooth file from an unkown source, which is what raised the question. However, they concluded that it was a bug on behalf of Nokia, and that other mobile OS's (palm, windows mobile) need not worry at the moment.

From Avast's own website:
"The importance of PDAs is growing every day and it is quite likely that these devices will soon become a target for new virus attacks."

The developer wants you to get this "just in case".
Really, there are no viruses out now.
But maybe there will be.
So run our software, and check for updates, and maybe, just maybe, one day there will be a reason to have this running on your phone.

Or perhaps I'm missing something here?

But yes, to answer the OP, the first choice seems the most correct, however it appears that at least three of those options would also work.
