alternate OS on mogul?

OK, well, I have successfully gotten 2.4 olipro' s bootloader on and have flashed several roms to it (sprint oem, dcds, no2chem..). Great work to all of the people who wrote/reverse engineered all of this stuff!

Are there any particularly good ones anybody could suggest? I'm not quite ready to build my own yet although I've checked out some kitchens. I'm particularly interested in a none windows mobile operating system or at least an alternate shell for windows mobile. Somewhat like the touchflo cube maybe but a total shell replacement. I'm still really new, just got my mogul a week ago and I've never had a mobile device before so if anybody can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated!

i've Been using simpleos project recently, and i think its a pretty cool alternative. I dont know how to post links, but if you google search simpleos project, it'll be the first site on the list. Definately worth a try. free demo version.

I just can't wait until this get worked out and is ported to PPCs and not just bigger devices like the HTC Shift.

edit: I looked up SimpleOS but it looks just like another shell for WinMo, not an alternate OS.

you could always try one of the iphone themes, or pointui. Pointui is probably the easist most useful graphical UI. Plus its free. www.pointui.com

Re: alternate OS on mogul?

He said a non-Windows Mobile OS. All these things are just skins and GUI addons. I don't think there really are any complete and ready OSes for the Titan besides Windows Mobile at the moment. Android and Ubuntu maybe ready someday but by the time they are ready there might not be as much point in porting it back to a device like the Titan that will probably be a little dated at that time. Still, if it's the kind of thing that comes out in a year or so it might get some great use out of older devices the way linux in general has let me get lots of use out of old computers and laptops.

he also mentioned some options for an alternative shell, and as far as that goes PointUI is pretty decent for a shell

Re: alternate OS on mogul?

Thanks to everybody who replied. Yes, I'm aware of PointUI. (actually the first one I tried) Also aware of the iphone skins/shells. I liked the touchflo cube too. I'm talking about something more like Google's Android project or Ubuntu Mobile. The only problem is neither of those two are far enough along. I'll give SimpleOS a shot but the words "demo, trial, try" etc usually make me run the opposite direction. Something with compatibility for pre-existing executables would be nice too since there are already a ton of apps out there.

I started using it last week when i updated to 3.5 net compact framework. I like the desktop feel to it, and ways to customize. So far, cons are moguls memory issues, and its not free. Im still tinkering, but its pretty cool. Free demo is nice, but limited as far as customizing.

256 MB recommended Ram.... good luck with Ubuntu... and way to graphically intensive for our crippled chips. Maybe Eten will start building cdma phones.....

Were you just trying to install Ubuntu or this mobile version? Ubuntu runs great on old hardware and if you have really old hardware, try Xubuntu because it has a more lightweight desktop environment then the default (Gnome). While you won't be playing many games on it, Ubuntu is a great free OS for people who want to do web browsing, media management, and document creation. If you want to play lots of newer games or edit audio or video you are still gonna have to stick to Windows for the time being (although some will run in Wine).

I was trying to install Ubuntu on a computer running Vista and it went through the installation, but did nothing in the long run. I have an old NEC Mobile Pro 750c. I wonder if it could install on that?

You can install it on a Vista computer just fine. There are great instructions online for how to do this but the way I usually set up a dual boot (with XP in my case) is to use a partition manager to just break off a chunk of my hard drive and set it as a separate partition. Then I split that up into the root partition, the swap partition, and a shared partition. The root should be formatted as ext3, the swap as linux swap, and the shared as fat32 (shared partition is for sharing things between your OSes).

I know this is a half-assed explanation but if you google "dual boot Vista Ubuntu" you will be good to go. When you run the Live CD you have the option to install it and when it asks where to put the root, swap, etc you point to the partitions you just made. I know you can repartition in this installer but for some reason I always like to do that part in Windows.

If nothing else, Ubuntu is a very simple way to experiment and learn another OS and in lots of ways it's better than Windows (other ways, not so much).

Sounds a little detailed but it makes sense. I actually went to the Apple store today to get a MacBook Pro. I was gonna use BootCamp and run Vista. It seems like some of the programs in Ubuntu are similar to the Mac OS. What do you think?

Well, the point of Linux is that it is free and free to alter. You can run it on any PC. While OSX has more software, you can only (legally) run it on Apple branded PCs which tend to be overpriced. I still prefer Windows XP to any Linux or Vista or OSX but the main reason for that is that it does everything I want with a relatively low minimum requirement and I can build my own computer or price one out. In my opinion there are only 3 reasons to buy an Apple computer: You prefer OSX over any Windows or Linux, you like the way they look, Final Cut Pro. Since I don't prefer OSX over Windows that one is out for me. As far as form factor, it's not worth the premium to me, and I have Premiere and Avid on my Windows PC so I can do without Final Cut for my video editing.

It really comes down to what you want out of a PC and how much you are willing to spend.

Yeah, I wanted to get the 17' inch MacBook Pro and the guy in the store me I was spending to much for a Mac. he suggested I get the 15.4 Macbook Pro. It's cheaper and it will do evrything the 17' can do. I have a 14.1 Dell Inspr. and a 15.4 Toshiba. Just kinda wanted to get a bigger model. I just bought my wife a 17' HP and she loves it. I only paid $700 for it at CompUSA. I wanted to try out OSX and some of the programs they offer. A buddy of mine uses Final Cut and her loves it. Right now I use Pinnacle Movie Studio 11 and Sony Vegas 8 for my editing.
