Camera picture quality ("grainy" and "gold'ish" color)

My wife an I both have the Alltel HTC-6800. The camera picture quality is worse than any I have ever seen. My daughter’s $29 pink LG phone has a better camera. Both of the 6800’s we have take real “grainy” pictures that look over exposed and always have a yellow/ gold tint to the color. Is there any fix for this? It sure does not look close to 2MB. Here is a link to a few pics I have taken with it recently.

Try this registry change, I found it here this morning while searching for reg hacks to include in my ROM. I noted the same grainy gold picture quality on my XV6800 before applying this and it made quite a difference.

HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\MainCamSupportCaptSize
Default value is 10 decimal (0xA hex). Change value to 58 decimal (0x3A hex).

PWeber 01-05-2008 01:18 PM

That seemed to have a positive impact. I will take some more and see. Thanks!

furiousgtz 01-05-2008 02:58 PM

is that same for PPC 6800?

I would think so yes.

I say this because the key being modified is in the HTC section of the registry which leads me to believe that it will work for all HTC 6800 hardware regardless of branding. IMHO.

randyb01 01-05-2008 07:27 PM

Please post the 'after' pictures too. My 6800 pictures are also bad.

itsall_cooool 01-05-2008 08:38 PM

I've found that you need to set the exposure control (2nd icon from the right across bottom) to the proper lighting and that solved a lot of my problems ... the dang shutter delay is the worst thing though ......

friguy3 01-05-2008 08:55 PM

my shutter delay is actually not even close to as bad as it was with the 6700, not that was bad!

monkey 01-05-2008 11:45 PM

Have you tried cleaning the lens?

This worked great for me... took the "orangeish" hue out of my pics. Thanks.

Well I can't remember on my mogul, but on my touch ...

Open the camera app and at the bottom is an Arrow, tap the arrow and select the "White Balance" change from "auto" to show a "lightbulb".

Inside my camera always had the orange/yellow hue, but if you changed it off auto it whitened it right up to the Real colors.

Are you suggesting to leave it at the light bulb setting for all settings - indoor and out? I found that out too, but I never take that many pictures to test it in various places.

Look back at the link to my pics. I took a pic of our entertainment center in living room right before making the reg. change at 11:19am. Not the next pic of the same ent. center after reg. changes is at 11:29. There is a noticable clarity change. Thanks.

friguy3 01-12-2008 02:02 PM

so now that i have my pictures looking better...anyone have some good settings for video. I had increased the bitrate to 320,000 and the frame rate to 19 on the MP4Large and cant tell if its any better!

ricchini2007 01-12-2008 02:10 PM

How do I do this?

There are a few registry editors out there you can use, PHM Registry Editor is one that I believe installs on the PPC itself, I have not tried that one but I see others refrence it here.

I use BreakSoft Mobile Registry Editor running on my WinXP machine which can access the registry on the PPC through Active Sync.

I also run FdcSoft Task Manager 2.7 on my 6800 directly. I think it installed with Total Commander.

Whichever software you choose you would follow the path laid out above (HKLM stands for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) and edit the refrenced key. If you are not familiar with editing your registry I will say you should read up a bit on it before forging ahead. You can hork thing up if you are not careful.

Is there anyway to make this registry change stick? When I reset the phone it returns to defalt. I'm using PHM Registry Editor and have the PPC-6800.

vaxick 01-12-2008 09:41 PM

Wow, nice edit!

This should survive a warm reset but a cold restart will set it back to your ROM values. I will assume you are doing a cold restart and the only way to get this to survive that would be to get it into your ROM. I have used Tiermans OEMizer to make an additional OEM file containing the reg entries I want cooked into my ROM so this entry along with several others will survive a cold boot.

Hope that helps.

Is there a way to put this Reg Hack into a CAB file?

I not sure what you mean by a warm or cold reset. When I do a soft reset by pushing in the button on the bottom of the PPC-6800 it resets the ROM values back to default. Should it be doing this or am I not saving it correctly?
Thanks!

Krayziepop 01-13-2008 08:01 PM

After making the registry change, properly exit your registry editor program and wait about 1 - 1.5 minutes before hitting the soft reset button. The PPC writes info to the registry in a very slow fashion, and your changes will not commit if you reboot too soon.

donkeythekidd 01-13-2008 08:58 PM

That did it. I wasn't waiting long enough before I did a soft reset.

Thanks!

There is Jeep but I do not know how do make a CAB. There is a thread for requesting CABs here:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10668

You can add a post there requesting a CAB, just read the first post in the thread for what you need to include in your request.

Jeep14 01-20-2008 07:21 PM

Great, Thank you I just made the request, I will let you know if they make it.
