revision A
Keep in mind that Rev.A is set to roll out very early next year. I have seen with my own eyes new equipment being installed at a Fiber Hub Site on Oct 30th.. read my post... and thread @ forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10736&page=2
While the equipment and software is being brought on-line and testing ensues I'm sure that problems like this will happen (Think DHCP Renewal). Also in the thread previously listed this exact same problem with internet connectivity is mentioned. I have had the same problem as others within the past week.. Internet is working... and then.. it isn't. I can use COM manager to stop and restart the phone Radio and then Internet is *usually* restored. Twice, cycling the phone Radio didn't fix the problem.. I waited approx 10 mins, cycled the Radio.. and then in worked. This problem has happened 5-6 times. Here in Richmond, VA I was told that Rev. A is scheduled to be fully Operational (On a National level) by Dec. 31. I heard that from a contractor installing the equipment... therefore.. it doesn't mean we get Rev.A on Dec.31, only that the Hardware and software are fully operational and ready to roll out when Sprint wants to. On a side note.... Rev A has been Operational for about a year (From some other posts) in some test markets (If memory serves me right I think Chicago was mentioned??). Some peeps on here are flaming Sprint for having RevA and not fulfilling their end-users with software updates because Sprint is a slow and doesn't care about their users. They obviously don't understand what a Test Market is.. or what a National Roll-Out is. Before RevA becomes reality the entire Infrastructure needs to be updated and operational before it is released. Later, phaZed |
So in your opinion, we can equate intermittent dropped connections to infrastructure upgrades?.... I hope so.
I just want to know if it is something that is being caused by something I am doing, or if it is truly systemic, and therefore nothing I can do about it. Before jumping up and down and complaining, I want to investigate it fully before I just jump to knee jerk reactions and say Sprint sucks. That would be irrational, and ill advised without fully testing the plethora of variables associated with a complex network infrastructure/ windows platform. As a computer person by both trade and hobby, I want to ensure nothing that is wrong is my fault before I start complaining. It obviously only affecting a few of us here, otherwise this thread would be a lot more popular, but I digress. It is annoying to try to use the internet when Im out only to find out it isn't working. I am used to <99% uptime, so having said that I am unsure as if this is par for the course and my expectations are too high, or simply am I doing something to cause my problems. If it is the latter, I want to know exactly what it is so I can keep it from happening in the future. |
Great posts supdawg and phazed!
Supdawg -- I dont think it is anything you are doing. This is because I have hard reset my touch and the problem exists even in that state. Another interesting thing you can do, is run Opera Mini. It (along with Total Commander FTP) works all the time on my touch. It would be good to get confirmation from others that that is the case. Evidently OM/FTP accesses the internet somewhat differently than pie/flexmail etc. Also there is another thread out there (created by me) :) : http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=14380 so others are having problems as well. Phazed -- I thought it might be evdo-a related but the way its intermittant at all hours, it seems to me that it might be a software issue with the evdo-a install. I just hope Sprint fixes the thing shortly. |

Ok.. just a quick update. The past few days have been horrible to say the least. I only have changed two things. I installed pocketcm contacts, and I set up weather for HTC home.
I also did install Opera Mini to see if I can access the net while PIE was not working.. As others have mentioned, it does work. So that obviously rules out the network as the culprit. I do have the registry hack that adds the disconnect button to the EV sign, but cycling the data connection, and having it reconnect to the sprint network does not fix my issue. Nor does applying flight mode, nor soft reset. I either get a blank web page, an error stating it cannot load the page, or even every know and again a DNS error. I guess if I cannot find the issue again, I will be forced to do a hard reset yet again. This will be my 4th time in a month with a hard reset. Does anyone think it could be just my phone? Perhaps swapping it out with another phone might help? |
This is getting ridiculous, 4 out of the 5 times trying to get online fails, it connects fine but will not do anything,
I either get a blank web page, an error stating it cannot load the page. The mail program works fine. Terminating the data connection and starting fresh seems to work 50% of the time. I have a regular $15 power vision plan (no SERO paying full price) and have good EVDO coverage (2-4 bars) around the Austin area. The only reg edit that I have is the one that adds the disconnect button to the EV sign. This has been going on for the last 2-3 weeks. On other thing that I have noticed is that text messages sent from a computer (google send to phone Firefox ext) come in hours late or never come. This also happens on ones sent from the sprint web site, but the phone to phone text messages come through just fine. On top of all this if you have a app that auto updates, It will kill your battery because of this. I know none of this info is helpful to anyone, I'm just ranting |
Looking at Opera and Pie and FTP
Something is going on with DNS servers is seems to me. I did a ping to google and found the IP is 64.233.167.99.. I wrote that down on a note in my Mogul. Then I waited until I couldn't connect with PIE... Plugged in the IP address and Google popped right up. Tried to connect to a www address.. and it just sat there waiting. So that tells me that the DNS server isn't acting properly.
Although I don't have Opera (Have used in the past on diff phones) I checked their FAQ. According to http://www.operamini.com/help/faq/#general they are using a Proxy server to "Optimize data throughput" to the end user. Opera may be connecting to an IP directly.. bypassing DNS name routing (Which would make sense if you want to have the fastest possible connection). Also if there is a DNS problem that would help explain why FTP works.. assuming people are plugging in a IP address and not something like "ftp.wherever.com". Later, phaZed |
good information phazed... I just opened pie, and it decided to work. I tried to input in 64.233.161.18 and it worked.. I've saved that IP into my favorites to try again when I cannot access the net anymore.
If it is a DNS error, than it should always connect using a hard coded IP address. |
Everyone is having problems but not one person here has said anything about contacting sprint to let them know there is something wrong... how are they going to to fix anything if you dont tell them???
This is affecting multiple users, in multiple cities, with multiple phones and multiple call plans... it is nothing you are doing to your phones, hard reset is not going to fix it Call sprint and point them to this current thread as well as this one http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...s-working.html as well as this one http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=14950 everytime I call them they tell me "well its news to me" cause no one is letting them know |
Connection still really flaky. I tried to put in a direct IP address directly in the URL bar, and I have not been able to connect to the internet. I get the IE error: The page cannot be displayed because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later.
I have full signal strength where I am at right now. The device was soft reset 3 minute prior to this last test, and had established a new connection. And of course Opera Mini 4 does work right now.. Just not PIE. Here's the strange part. Every time I hard reset, I dont have any issues. It seems like I start experiencing issues as I install applications. I cannot figure out what applications seem to cause issues, but my gut tells me it is something that accesses the network on its own (HTC Home weather, SPB weather, Weather Panel). Everyone having these issues, are you running one of these three applications by chance? |
