as you can see the version information is the same. my question is how different are the base system of these roms, or is it all customizations from the carriers?

Its purely the OEM that is different *points at the OEM version differences in the above posts*.

Run a binary comparison on the OEM directories and you'll see the differences quickly. Mostly a small smattering of driver and apps diferences.

Aside from the obvious version differences (2.14 vs 2.17), the two probably differ in a few drivers and certificate packages, small things like that. If you asked me, Sprint 2.17 is significantly better than Alltel 2.14 simply because of the version number. 2.17 is wonderful, but anything prior sucks balls. Literally.

Actually, 2.14 has better memory management than 2.17. 2.17 offers better speed. A combination of the two is proving to be quite nice. ;)

Is there really such a hybrid? I'd love to try it out on my Mogul.
