Activesync SLOW on WM5 (WM6?)
A few months ago, I tried upgrading my Verizon XV6600 to a Palm Treo 700wx running WM5, and to a Sprint Mogul running WM6. In both cases, Activesync runs like a DOG. I have 2600 contacts and 5100 calendar items, plus notes, etc., and I am running Outlook XP/2002 on Windows XP. I am running the latest version of Activesync on Windows XP. To sync all of these items to a hard-reset XV6600 takes approximately 6 MINUTES. Doing the same thing to either of the above new phones running WM5 or WM6 takes about 10 HOURS. Can anybody tell me why this is happening, and more important, if there is any fix for this? Thanks! |
My solution:
Dont use active sync, use this PIMBACKUP, its a pretty nice program, read up below http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705 *ps, just copy the notes from one directory to the other, but as far as contacts and messages, this program is genius |
Wait... go back and read that post.
2,600 contacts! 5,100 calendar items! Wow. Yeah, that's going to be dog slow with the new, improved activesync you have to use for WM5/6 That's got to be close to a 20MB pim.vol file. I honestly have no idea how to speed that up. |

I have looked at several pages regarding PIMBACKUP (including your link), and I cannot tell - can this be used for daily sync between Outlook on the PC and Outlook mobile? I update contacts and appointments in both places, depending on where I am. |

Why is the "new and improved" activesync so freaking slow? I can almost handwrite the data faster than it transfers from PC to phone. My XV6600 is on its last legs (impatiently waiting on XV6800), and has hard-reset itself several times in the last few months. However, to reload all that data on WM2003 takes only about 6 minutes (which seems quite reasonable to me). |
i'm still jaw drop to the number of contacts O.O
^^;; now my once large contact list feels relatively minuscule... heh.. You must make great business trades, or just great conversations.... O.O |
WM5/6 == completely new "database in files" system - simpler for some things, a lot slower for others... and kinda breaks down when the database gets large. Yours is large.

Thank you. That helps... I think. ](*,)

I have always placed a high premium on relationships, and one day a dozen years ago, Outlook appeared to help me keep track of them. And then came PDAs and Activesync. Then came the Pocket PC phones and Nirvana. Then came WM5 and shock. ](*,) |
When the sync finally finishes, can you use a file explorer like total commander (or even view "my mobile device" via activesync in the details view) and let me know how big the \pim.vol file is? And how much free internal storage you have?

I also have to confess, to this day, I am not sure which folder is truly the "root" on my device. Is it:
Tools/Folder Options shows that I am set up to:
My memory shows

Ah wait... I meant on WM5/6 - it won't show up pre-wm5, since its not a file. Sorry for the confusion.

When I upgraded to the Palm 700wx with Verizon, it was both old technology AND the sync was glacial. So, I tried defecting to Sprint for a Mogul. Sync still glacial, plus customer service sucked. So I stayed with Verizon, and am waiting for them to release XV6800, whereupon I will start my sync, start up a movie, go to bed, and not stress about the sucky sync until morning. Any idea, by the way, if the slow sync goes away with a new Windows version of Outlook? |
You have me beat by two orders of magnitude on your data set, I have no idea where yours is breaking down.
Looks like your pim data is in the ballpark of 20MB. You'll need the current version of ActiveSync, and I think Outlook 2003 or better. What versions are you running right now? |

Seems OK to me. So, not sure what you can do here to fix this.
Wonder if using the OTA activesync via mail2web.com (the free mail2web live, for example) would be any faster. |
Just to chime in, I have about 1100 contacts, and my pim.vol is 8.1 MB. (cemail.vol ~2.5MB). I didn't use a timer, but I think the initial sync (through the PC AS connection) took at least 3-4 hours. I use Mail2web and have noticed no delay at all in subsequent syncs. In fact, when I used strictly M2W for the initial sync over the air, it seemed to be done much quicker, probably less than an hour - I'll test this next time I flash. With these kinds of sync times, you can see why flashing is not something I like to do every day.
BTW, although I like PIMBackup for call logs, I've avoided it for contacts and all the other Outlook objects - it seems that's the path to duplicate records. Anybody know different? i.e. is it possible to flash/hard-reset and restore PIM data, re-build your sync partnerships and still have all the data fully synced without going through the initial sync process? Thanks, tmb |
was reading on another forum somewhere and a file gets written to windows\temp each time a sync occurs. Try deleting the files in this directory on your pc and see what happens.

Saves all that syncing time. |

Having just gone through two WM6 rom flashes and complete re-syncs in 2 days, I can confirm that syncing of my Outlook data takes about 4.5 hours by Activesync 4.5 and takes less than 45 minutes directly by wireless connection to the Exchange server. So yeah - I'm sticking with wireless for future initial syncs also.

I've taken to using mail2web live as my sole "partnership" - I leave my outlook alone now ;) |
