I am trying to learn/understand building a custom ROM, but I had a question.

What can be done with all the folders that are already in the OEM folder? I see stuff that I want to remove, but at the same time there is some apps that I want to keep (i.e. epst in oemapps). A lot of the other custom roms seem to still have those folders, and from everything I have been reading I thought OEM would be a little more clearcut as to what to add/delete.

Thanks DogGuy for this early kitchen. I'm really excited to see what the final kitchen will look like!

this "process" simply makes the first step to doing what you want.

The vendor packaged a lot of things "together" in the OEMapps folder. The process you are execing give you a setup like then vendor made.

It is a laborious process to perform the type of extractions you are refering to, and should be undertaken with "care" and understanding. you are "possibly" undoing a number of interdependencies if you start swiping stuff out of an oem directory. Thats not to say it cannot be done {indeed a lot of people are working on just that and it is a big reason there is no "release" kitchen yet} but that it is not a simple cut and paste operation.

I was figuring it wouldn't be an easy task since they crammed a whole bunch of apps in a few folders.

I guess my best option is to ignore those folders for now and start adding my own apps and regedits.

Thanks!

Did you try to go back to the bootloader screen and try again? (hold down camera+power while resetting)

using dcd rom with kitchen maker

For those of you thinking you "borked" your phone, and are stuck at the boot screen, boot your phone in bootloader mode, and try no2chem's rom as a base. Nothing against DCD, but his roms do not work as a base in the kitchen maker utility. The boot screen was as far as I got with it as well. Flash DCD's roms as is, and it works great!

You can use any rom as a base where the builder isn't removing the .rgu's, .dsm's or anything else that makes rebuilding difficult. No2Chem has a great base that seems to work wonders. When in doubt, use one of the original carrier roms. I have a preference for Alltel personally.

I'm in the chat quite a bit, so if anyone finds themselves stuck, or feeling like they may have borked their phone, feel free to come find me.

Two updates. First, the kitchen maker has been altered ever so slightly to optimize memory usage for those on a ramdisk.... again, slight. Kitchen06 is the newest version.

Second, http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=12060 is the link to a version of this kitchen with a phenomenal base already prepared, as well as a handful of OEMs.

Better ReadMe.doc is still in the works. OEM add-on pack is in the works as well.

Happy cooking,
- DogGuy
