WM6 sucks up 44mb of RAM after hard restart? wtf???

I practically know pocket pc's inside out but I was looking in the "device information" on the ppc and something is puzzling me:

OS Memory: 16.77
Program Memory:47.23
Used:27.69
Free:19.54

So...off the bat WM6 uses 16.77 plus 27.69

Ok heres my issue, what is the "OS memory"??? My assumption was this is what WM6 uses for start up apps, etc but what from a fresh hardset would use and ADDTIONAL 27.69MB on top of the 16.77MB?????? No start up apps or anything installed....So that means WM6 uses in total 44.46MB out of 64MB???? WTF IS IT LOADING THAT IT HAS TO USE 44MB??????

Could someone please explain this I'm so confused ](*,)

Without the sprint extras installed it should have around 25mb or so free mem.

gxnext 10-23-2007 11:03 AM

well...

well.. then how can we go about removing the sprint extras that we don't need.... i remember doing this on the 6700... but I don't remember how...well now that I think about it I think I had to hard reset the phone, and just before the phone starts installing sprints extras you do a soft reset. and then afterwards i had to manually install the recommended cab files. but I don't know whats necessary or recommended for the 6800 nor do I know how to extract the cab files just n case.... but I'll look into figuring it out, or finding a way. if whats not necessary can increase the memory ANY its worth figuring out lol.

TurboFool 10-23-2007 11:22 AM

It really is absurd. Never did understand why there's a portion set aside for the OS and then it still takes from the rest of the memory.

Existentialism 10-23-2007 11:32 AM

Are the sprint extra just items I can remove from startup? I really don't want to use a custom ROM.

again,i think you have to do a hard reset and stop them from being installed. only problem is i think u need to manually install some of more necessary ones, if its anything like the way its done on the 6700 the phone will still work without the sprint extras installed, you just have to manually configure your internet settings, I don't really remember anything else being a issue. but I would recommend having all the sprint extra cab files just ncase they are needed for the 6800... whatever the case you can always hard reset again. but I believe removing some of those startup items can improve the memory a little bit aswell... I've removed all of them except "poutlook" and "voice command" (voice command im tempted to remove because im finding i hardly ever use it)

Existentialism 10-23-2007 01:29 PM

I really don't want to do a hard reset. I finally have it just how I want it. Isn't there a way to just stop these processes from running on startup?

You're confusing memory, and storage. It's similar to a PC, where say, your windows install uses up some of your RAM, for itself, and then programs use up more RAM on top of that, in fact, the design is the same. The partition is for the storage of the OS.

So how do we free up some memory?
Can we get rid of all the factory junk like software store, audible, get good etc?
If so how do we go about doing that?
how do you install ROMs n the ppc 6800? I'm game to try it out if it will free some memory.

Existentialism 10-23-2007 02:10 PM

See my thing is, I like Sprints ROM as far as applications, I use them all but obviously it's loading stuff into memory I don't need all the time, so I need a way so that I can keep all the apps, but they only launch when I want them. Thus I don't use so much memory.

WTF was HTC thinking???? 99% of people who have PPC are hardcore PPC users!! NONE OF US here just use whats already installed on the ppc. We add apps, etc. Why waste all the ram with random crap and then not release it properly when done with it!! wtf!!??? I'm still pissed about the OS sucking up 44mb on boot.:protest:

I have 5 friends who own a 6800. Not one of them is a hardcore PPC user.

1. My buddy Joby, I've explained to him how to delete files a dozen times.
2. My buddy Bryan. He is tech savy, but doesn't modify his in anyway. He is a user, not an enthusiast.
3. My girlfriend. DLR. I have had to format hers' 3 times.
4. My cousin. STUPID. I have to install themes for her or she can't use them.
5. My cousin's husband/friend. He can use it adequately, but I don't know that he has ever installed one program himself. I been setting his phones up since he got my old Treo 650.

Don't make up random bullshit quotes. Not one of those people even know there is a problem with the device. If I explained it to them 2 of the 5 would follow. The third would be so pissed he would have me calling Sprint demanding fixes and patches. He might even go as far as returning the phone.

are any of those people members of this forum? HELL NO. Speak for yourself when you post shit about other folks. Now back to what I was talking about...

99% of folks who use ppc install extra software. There should be no reason whatsoever the OS eats that much ram. We all have the ram issue just becuz your friends don't install shit doesn't mean their's isn't messed up also. I do see why assholes like u gotta come on here and start talkin shit when you don't even know what the hell ur talkin about.

I know two people with moguls, one is a hardcore tweaker like me, and the other doesnt have a clue what he is doing with a phone like this (mainly got it cause i told him i could watch youtube on it)

N-e ways, the sprint junk has almost nothing to do with the amount of ram being used, it maybe accounts for 2-3 mbs on start up, when you compare that to the amount that gets sucked up by the "cache" (which is utter bs to me), it doesnt even matter

i remember, after cutting a whole lot of stuff out, i had my mogul starting up at around 27mbs (after oxios ran), but it still found a way to suk more than half of that into its
"cache", and the only thing that seems to stop my memory from going into the black whole is restarting the phone

wm6 is a ram eater, period, wm5 is a ram eater too, it sucks more than half of 64mb off rip just like wm6, the only thing we can do is try to make memory stop disappearing

Hopefully soon we can get some kitchens or full custom roms that use very little ram. It just annoys me I have to reset almost every 2 hours or so now or not menus will open and it's very sluggish. I don't see why HTC didn't pack these ppc with 128 or 256mb of ram. If we had that it wouldn't matter if WM6 ate ram...unless it kept going until till all the ram was gone lol

Get a life, and quit flaming ls3mach for calling you on your made up "facts"
Who's talking shit and speaking for other people...YOU.
Who is making numbers and figures..YOU
Who doesn't know what they are talking about...YOU
Who is the asshole coming on here and talking shit and jumping on other people....YOU

Sorry for all the swearing harshness but apparently that's all you can comprehend, as for your grasp of ppc's, if you knew much you would know HTC has other models with more memory and less and will obviously be making ones with more memory in the future, Kaiser Touch etc.

Anyone who didn't anticipate memory shortage possibility, given the specs, probably shouldn't be talking like they are an expert know it all.

The 6800 isn't cutting edge, but it is what it is.

I guess all dumb asses that don't understand the concept of ppc's stick together since it is apparent you know NOTHING about about the subject.

I asked a simple question and you all started talkin ur mess (WHICH I FIGURED OUT MYSELF WITHOUT THE HELP OF ANY OF YOU) Becuz if any of you were "intelligent" as it seems you are claiming, you would have known the answer to the question..Im nice till people start to show off...This will be the last time im responding to you any of u dumb asses within this thread....

None of you talkin shit know your ass from your face. With the proper parts I could build a ppc. I know how to develope software, build computers, I work for a large internet comany AND have a small business on the side which when sales start picking up will be ditching my current job to work for myself (1 month TOPS)....you bitches tried it and FAILED. I am more successul and intelligent then any of you currently are or ever will be PERIOD.

AOL employees are allowed to post here?

Good luck with Mary Kay!

TC1 10-23-2007 11:05 PM

Yea... you'll all be working for Steps one day.... you wait and see.... muahahahaha!

Ok... sorry about that... I was sniffing glue when I wrote that.

ls3mach 10-24-2007 12:43 AM

LMAO. You don't even understand the difference between ram and rom. If you could write software for the PPC, you would probably understand how that works. I am not going to get into a "who is more successful" pissing contest with you, I simply lack the caring and the time for such debates. I mean you obviously know much more than all of us, I wonder why you were even here to begin.

If you are as smart as you claim, and I know you are. Then why don't you write a kitchen, instead of waiting on someone [dumber] to do so?

I thoroughly enjoy your excessive use of coarse language.

Thanks,
Lonzo
