Re: Stuck buttons
I guess they say it was because of it rubbing in your pocket when it comes in and out. We will see, I have a case on it now that it higher than the buttons.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
mine failed within weeks (two buttons stuck) and NEVER did it enter my pocket.
HTC makes too many phones and obviously has limited resources to avoid quality control issues (inadequate testing). To suggest a protector is needed to protect the buttons is simply pathetic. |
Re: Stuck buttons
I agree they also said the production run is done and they wont modify this model.

my refurbish/replacement has a slight crack (another defect previously reported) on top in the grill/mesh above the verizon logo. i would have refused it but already put on a screen protector & set it up before noticing it. these phones really suck in terms of build quality. pathetic job HTC. lets hope some early reports of windows phone 7 in October. :) |

Re: Stuck buttons
I feel like this is a common issue. It may not be the same timing for everyone, but it seems to be pervasive. What are we going to do when our warranties are up? This issue should probably be brought to the attention of HTC. We need a product recall, methinks. I am going to set up a poll in another thread to see if others are having this issue- please vote!

Re: Stuck buttons
I had one go too, with the OK (arrow) button failing. The replacement has fared better, but I feel its just a matter of time before it will fail too.
I agree, I'm so ready for WP7S and the news and demos from MIX make it even more desireable. Thank goodness I have some ROMs to keep me occupied for a few months. |
Re: Stuck buttons
My replacement phone's back button is now sticking. It worked fine one day and then poof. Funny thing too is I tried to not use the hardware buttons a lot.
I'm now getting my second Imagio replacement. I like the phone's footprint so I don't know what else to do but to keep getting this thing! Quality control or not, my hardware buttons have failed within 1-2 months on two Imagios. HTC can have a robot arm pushing them constantly, c'mon! ](*,) |
Re: Stuck buttons
Yup, stuck buttons on my original and my replacement. Time for a new replacement.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
Just my $0.02 on the issue:
I had my original device from nov 27th through about feb 20th...then the windows button stuck. At first, I was hell-bent on getting a new replacement, but due to the incredible difficulty VZW made me go through in order to get it, I got a replacement. The first one they sent had terrible light leak and the vibration was audible from across the room, so I sent it back. The second replacement had similar problems, but not nearly as bad so I accepted it. Its now 2 mths later and the phone is in the exact same state it was when I received it, which is a good thing. At the end of the day, I'm a little upset that I spent $300 on a phone with so many physical defects. That being said, now that we have it unlocked etc, it is hands-down the best phone at VZW (least until the incredible comes out...bastards). I mean it may seem silly, but things like button quality are often overlooked. Nevertheless, go compare the screen quality with any other phone. I had mine side-by-side with a droid and the screen is simply better. Not only that, but it often beats my friends overclocked droid when it comes to loading web pages. What's more is that AFAIK, my phone is the ONLY phone that will connect to my college's network. A friend who works for IT let me know that they were shocked that a phone managed to get onto the network. At the end of the day, you would have to pry this phone from my cold dead hands to get it. I've considered upgrading to the incredible when it comes out, but I really don't see the point of having all that power, without windows mobile. Ultimately, now that I've gotten over the "refurb" aspect, and knowing that I can have a replacement within 48 hours with no difficulty, the button issue doesn't bother me. Cliche, but it's what's on the inside that counts, and I definitely trust the internal components...which is what matters to me in the end. On a related note, I realllly don't like the idea of WM7. I wish I could articulate this a bit better, but it seems to be just as "restricted" as the iphone. Funny thing about both android and iphone is that they're marketed as being highly customizable, but really they're nowhere near as customizable as WM6.x. While both apple and google did a lot of really good things with their respective OS's, it appears that windows has decided to take the worst aspect from them: completely sealed, proprietary OS and phone. Even if it's the best OS ever, the thought of being inexorably tied to microsoft supported stuff makes me a bit hesitant. Sure, it will probably be unlocked, but just as the case of a jailbroken iphone, it still won't be nearly as customizable as the phones we have now. Okay...maybe $0.03 :-P |
Re: Stuck buttons
Nuts... I joined the lot of you. Just as I was starting to like the phone. I guess that'll teach me to be happy!

Re: Stuck buttons
MOTHER F**KER! No sooner do I come to the defense of the imagio, but my send button breaks! Karma hates my ass. Phone #3 comes on Wednesday.
On a related note, when I asked the woman what would happen if the phone broke again, she emphatically said that I could pick out another model of refurb phone. I even mentioned how I heard the replacement program had been done away with, to which she replied that she knew, but this was different...odd, huh? In any case, Incredible, here I come! Just gotta have another button at jusssst the right time. ;-) |

Re: Stuck buttons
Are you sure? I've been aware and repeatedly told that after 3 bum devices, you can "pick" (from a list of devices they select) a "new" certified like-new device. That being said, I've also been told, both her and by CS reps, that the program had been discontinued, and you are now doomed to your current phone for the duration of the contract. This most recent time, I was told that if it broke again I was entitled to a new device, but with all the conflicting info, I'm not too confident. Regardless, it would be super cool if this next replacement broke just after the incredible came out...then again, I don't have high hopes of it being on the "exchange list." They'll probably try to stick me with an Omnia II or Storm II...we shall see.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
people have posted the "new after 3" option was rescinded ~ feb1 but you'll have to go make an a$$ out of yourself in an Authorized Verizon Store (where you also purchased) imho to get them to waiver. If they do....
New, used or refurb it's not like Verizon has any alternate/better WM6 devices for someone sick of sloppy HTC phones. Unfortunately the O2 has less RAM. Storm-2 ugh that is a lemon also. |
Re: Stuck buttons
So has anyone stripped apart this phone to confirm it's just the rubber o-ring breaking? I wish there was a quick fix for this, cause my replacment phone just got another stuck button.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
I kept having stuck button problems on my Imagio which I got in early october. I called in last week and requested a like new replacement of a different type of phone similar or lower in price and without much argument the supervisor on the phone agreed to it and let me hand pick a phone. The phone they replaced my Imagio with with the HTC Eris. Currently the Eris is much lower in price but I'm content with it. If any of you want to try to go that route it does exist.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
I eventually had to get a replacement as well. It got to the point where the stuck buttons caused the phone to not even boot anymore.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
*sigh* Add my phone to the list, stuck end key.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
I do have to say since I have had my case I have not had naother stuck button and I previously had 6 or 7 phones with keys messed up. This has been a few months now.

Re: Stuck buttons
I learned yesterday that my Send button broke at some point in the recent past (I never use it), and instead of doing the smart thing and sending it in, I attempted a repair. Dog barked just at the right moment and I ended up slicing the original membrane with an X-Acto knife.
So ... rather than stop there, why the heck not, I already screwed my warranty, so I opted for a gung-ho repair. Based on a previous poster's repair, I grabbed my tube of "Permanently Flexible" GE Silicone Household Glue, and old SD card case, and went to work. I removed the original membrane and POS plastic disc. Then, I cut out a very small piece of that old clear plastic SD card case that fit comfortably in the button cavity. Using a jeweler's screwdriver as a tiny spatula, I applied the flexible glue around the inside edge of cavity, careful not to get any on the contact itself, but still having enough to hold the plastic piece. I set the clear plastic into the glue, using a knife to ensure it was centered where I wanted it and dabbed a little more glue where necessary. Waited about 5 minutes. I put a very small amount of glue on the back of the button and set that in place. A USB hard drive provided just the right amount of weight to "clamp" the button and make sure it stays level with the other buttons. 2.5 hours later, I gave it a try. IT WORKS! Using clear plastic and clear glue, the LED light shines through perfectly, and while the button doesn't quite "feel" like it should, probably because the plastic I used is much thicker than the original disc, but it functions. I'm happy enough, since my stupid choice to try and fix it has been, for now, negated :-) I have to pray I don't lose any more buttons, I actually use the other ones quite a bit. Time will tell how long my repair will last, but I can always clean out the button cavity and try again. If you're brave and patient and for some reason cannot get a warranty device (or are just a moron like me and void your warranty thinking it's a 10 second fix), you can seemingly fix these buttons to an acceptable and functional state. Like the previous poster indicated, the most important thing is glue that doesn't fully harden. YMMV, I take absolutely no responsibility if you try to fix your button(s) and screw them up. |
Re: Stuck buttons
send key stuck on my first replacment calling tomorrow to get another on the way. what a shame other then the buttoms its by far the best phone verizon has

I'd bet that a lot of issues are from certain types of pouches. My old leather pouch would allow the buttons to get pressed from a seat belt or when sitting. Also, I don't think it's a good idea for a resistive screen to have pressure on it when it's not supposed to anyways. Also, I try to use my soft buttons whenever possible just in case. |
Re: Stuck buttons
well you can now add me to the list....erghhh i bought the phone on craigslist from the original owner for $240. Worked great for a long time but now send & end are stuck....He said its still under warranty..I wonder if HTC will fix it? I am not on verizon though, it has been flashed to metro so I dont want to swap it what so ever. I wonder if I can find a shop to fix it locally..this sucks
update...took off buttons with needle and realigned small clear circles and used super glue. all is well |
Re: Stuck buttons
add me to the list. My phone is perfect, no button issues, but just had to have my girlfriends phone replaced, all but the Windows key button on the front of the phone were "stuck"
New phone 2 days later and we are back in business. |
Re: Stuck buttons
I think they made a change on the keys because on the ones I got replaced, the keys always had a sticky tape kind of sound and feel to them when I pressed them.... and they broke. the new one always felt solid, and it's holding up fine.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
Yay my end key on my REPLACEMENT is stuck! :(
|
Re: Stuck buttons
Oh god can we have a permanant solution... why cant some third party vendor manufacture the buttons
|
Re: Stuck buttons
I fiugred out the issue when I opened up my Imagio. *Couldnt care less about warranty*
Found out what the issue was. Ita accumulation of dirt under the keys. holding the fulcrum mechanism. Its just bad having so much gap b/w keys and the housing frame. And Somehow i find my phone to be a dirt magnet!!! Just sent my phone back to Verizon..... And just remember to restore your phone back to factory settings. I thnk the info is in the Kitchens sticky. You dont want to pay full retail even though the s/w has nothing to do with stuck buttons |
Re: Stuck buttons
I've already sent back 2 Imagios... I wonder how many times they'll send me a new one before allowing me to pick a new phone. I'm very happy with this phone except for the stuck buttons, but I could see upgrading to a new model if it keeps happening.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
I bought my Imagio in mid-January. I had problems with the buttons in April; VZ replaced the phone with a Refurbished unit. Last week the buttons started failing on the Refurbished one. VZ is sending me another phone. So, I'll be on my 3rd phone in less than 6 months.
The VZ guy told me to raise hell with HTC and said VZ only sells the device and cannot be responsible for the hardware issues. Which is horrible customer service IMO. Anyone know who to contact at HTC? |
Re: Stuck buttons
don't waste your time. you'll have the same HTC shoddy quality device, new or refurb.
with any smartphone... and especially an HTC smartphone... it's imperative to BACKUP for an easy restore. |
Re: Stuck buttons
I'm not concerned about losing data as I have a backup of everything. I'm just tired of dealing with shoddy hardware.
|
Re: Stuck buttons
Went from a TouchPro to the Imagio [warranty exchange]. Had it a little over a week when the Windows button got stuck. It could still function, but had to press it harder than normal. I was OK with that after reading this forum and considered myself lucky. Then a few days later my green phone button just absolutely stopped working. When I took it in, the CSR was going to order a refurb. I told her it was less than 2 weeks old. She gave me a new one out of the box. This one seems to be of a different manufacture batch as the buttons feel better [maybe my imagination].
IMO, this is the best WM phone Verizion offers and am happy with the performance. One month now, so far so good [fingers crossed]. |
Re: Stuck buttons home Fix
okay my dial/green button got stuck last night and i have attempted to fix it with some tape and super glue. (no warranty :( ).. i dont have a camera so im going to try and explain what i did to fix it.
Things you will need, Tweezer Super Glue Scotch tape, What i used was Nexcare Flexible Clear Transpore Surgical Tape. Grab some tape with some thickness. Sharp nose scissors Pin Needle and a little patience http://forum.xda-developers.com/imag...ies/tongue.gif Okay First thing i did is remove the button from the phone, Be careful when removing button so that you do not lose the clear white circle that pushes the actual button in. Attached to the button there will be a white ish rubber be sure to keep as much as this rubber attached with the button. (the white part) Any white part that is left attached around the [+] button cut it away to the black rim. Now cut the excess rubber on the edges of the removed button of so there is nothing hainging off the button. If the white rubber is still stuck on the back of the removed button leave it there, or it wont sit flush with the other buttons once stuck back on. Okay now examine the mini push button on the phone.. It should look like this |LED [+] LED| Now grab your super glue, pin needle, and clear circle that you found/removed safely. http://forum.xda-developers.com/imag...lies/smile.gif put a drop of glue on a piece of paper and dip the needle in it and then rub some glue on the [+] button, (VERY little just to hold the clear circle in place, bc you dont want it to glue the button in the stuck down position. Then quickly drop the clear circle thingy on top of the [+] Button. Center it as good as you possibly can. Let dry for 5 min before continuing. Then cut 2 square pieces of tape about the size of 3mmx3mm, to paste over the 2 LEDs on both sides of the [+] Button. ex: (|TP[+]TP|) Then Drop some glue on both pieces of Tape and press the removed button on top of it all. DO NOT GLUE THE TAPE TO THE LED! Let dry for 3 min. And your button will be fixed! if the button does not click as it used to make your tape used wasnt thick enough. what you can do is, before you glue the button on just rest it on there and test it to see if it clicks. Rep Me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/imag...lies/smile.gif Let me know if you have any questions! http://forum.xda-developers.com/imag...c/progress.gif |
Re: Stuck buttons
the buttons on this phone are pure sh**. my windows button broke twice and now my multimedia key broke. october can not come fast enough.

Re: Stuck buttons home Fix
Quote:
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD the buttons on this phone are held in place in two ways 1. there is a LIGHT adhesive 2. the body of the phone is overmolded, this overmolding is what primarily holds the buttons in place if you use the above method you will ruin the overmolding and cutting away the rubber will 100% ruin the chance of restoring the phone to like new condition you need to take the phone apart and take the buttons out that way, the main reason they get stuck is- the plastic circles become displaced. reposition them, and adhere your buttons back to the overmolding with fletching glue, allow 15mins to dry. word to the wise it is not worth the hassle, take it to verizon they will give you a new one for free under the OEM Defect Warranty. |
Re: Stuck buttons
stuck back button now on my replacement. the irony is that it's the button i RARELY or ever use (due to poor placement on the bottom). pathetic quality by HTC
i'll have to get a new one before preparing to dump Verizon when my contract expires in less than a month. |
Re: Stuck buttons
I had this happen to me with a NEW Imagio sent to me from Verizon directly and not from store stock. The phone was less than a week old and the END button failed. Swapped out for new one at a local store and so far so good. About 3 weeks old now... :/
