what's the best GPS app?

I'm on verizon but don't have their Navigator service. I understand from various forums that Google Maps etc. work on the Imagio. Can someone suggest the best software - I'd like something that speaks turn by turn directions and readjusts its commands if I miss the turn etc. Is there anything like that?

Amaze GPS is a good application, gives turn by turn navigation. Uses your data connection so does drain the battery quite a bit and I found the process of entering the address was tedious but the best FREE program for turn by turn navigation.

I have been really happy with Garmin, turn by turn, different travel characters and voices, access to google search and access to contacts. Very convenient. Saved nav points and routes usually spot on navigation.

I don't think you can go wrong with TomTom of Garmin, they are the standard. Personally I use TomTom on my phone and have a dedicated GPS from them and love the interface/navigation.

I've been using iGuidance 3.0 and it's very slow. It used to run a little slow on my Samsung i760 when I turn on the voice prompt, but it's ridiculously slow on the Imagio. It's about 2-3 seconds behind where I am and the voice guidance sounds like Stevie from Malcom in the Middle (the kid in the wheelchair with the severe asthma).

Google maps seem fast enough, but I'd like to have something that I don't need a data connection for.

Try 2009 version its fine on my end, except it doesn't really support wide screen resolution, but works fine just without extra portion of map on the bottom.

You have TT running??? I've used 7.910.9185, 7.915.9196, and 7.9189 with horrendous results; too laggy to use at all and I've turned off all POI's (which has been reported to make it lag) with no benefit. What version do you have running?

I've just installed Nav4All (freeware at www.nav4all.com) with good results but I want my TomTom back!

CoPilot Live v8 works very well. I have been using copilot since v3. The last version I had was 6 and this is a BIG upgrade. The program itself is very fast and right after it boots up, it shows me my location. The quickest lock I have ever had from a GPS/software combination. It is very finger friendly, supports wvga in both portrait and landscape. For $30 ($35 for no upgrade), it's very good.

I tried all the tomtoms also. The problem i'm getting is it kills my bluetooth. Every time i install it and restart, I get an error saying my BTtray is not a valid CE program or something. Then I do a hard reset to get everything back to normal.

Re: what's the best GPS app?

It all depends on what you want. I use Google maps for finding locations. I also use Bing(what used to be Live Search) again to find certain locations. However, Amaze works well with good turn by turn. It just has a funny look. Also there is a nice program called Global Navigator that costs approx. $50 that does a nice job. The trial/free version does it all without the turn by turn directions.

I miss Tom Tom as well. How current is Garmin with their maps?

My problem with Garmin is that it's a physical purchase with memory card. I just want the software.

I'm using Garmin XT- it works great. I purchased a download off of ebay for $25, which was then installed on my own SD card.

That's a pretty good deal, how current were the maps? And does he have more? :)

The maps were Garmin's most up to date maps. So that means, like all map data (most places use navteq, I believe), its about 1-2 years old. But the system also came with internet access for info from google maps, flight info, weather, gas prices, etc.

Looking for the same store on ebay, but it doesn't look like they're selling them anymore. I guess I lucked out. Maybe set up a search to email you when the item pops up again.

Check smartphone magazine online. Under a year ago I'd say they did a review on all the GPS apps. Start there and then make a decision.

I tried to google for the article and was unsuccessful, I didn't try too hard though.

If you check their annual best software awards (currently only at 2008 since 2009 isn't over yet) you can find best GPS software and they divide it by voice guidance apps and non-voice guidance, etc.

http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/awa...nners_ppc_apps

I think a lot more voice guided gps apps are available now though.

Re: what's the best GPS app?

I used the following softwares

1) I guidance
2) Tomtom
3) Garming GT

I had tons of lag wth tomtom. Its almost 3 to 5 seconds delay with tomtom.
garmin GT was the worst, it just freezes some times and takes forever to recalculate the routes.

So far I liked the Iguidnance eve though the 3d view is not that great.

Its all on Imagio

Hope it helps

I ended up purchasing this one from eBay, and I'm glad I did. The seller communicated well and he's been very accommodating, especially with help making sure my phone was configured correctly for the GPS app.

I love it! Finally - a phone that allows me to do everything I need in the MS world (CRM, email, etc.), and gives me a useful GPS for just a handful of shekels...

I love this place!
