Absolutely. It's not too expensive to get a global data package from Verizon. It amounts to about $2 a day, so if you're out of town for say, a week, you're looking at $14. It's a lot less hassle than having to get a local SIM, etc etc. The only downside to Verizon overseas is that while you can get everything from voice and data at a reduced rate, SMS is not covered. You're looking at 50 cents to send (yes, 50 CENTS a piece) and 5 cents to receive, but you can easily get around that with unlimited e-mails through the data package. Also, the data for $2 a day is unlimited, so you can't really argue with that rate.:)

Ya verizon global data is a great deal. When I was in Brazil I used the verizon sim for data and bought an Oi sim for calls.

Huh!

You say this is called "global data" and it is $2 a day for unlimited calls and data???

Where do I find this? :)

I am looking at the VZW site and I see few "global" things but they all list $1.99 PER MINUTE, like:

http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Glo...fic/China.html

The only thing that approaches the $2 a day is their "Global email" which is basically $64 / month and it seems to also include calls?

http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Glo...fic/China.html

Is this what you are talking about? Do you pay this monthly or can you just take 2 weeks?

Thanks - I know this is kind of getting away from original question... :) but I too would much rather not mess with foreign SIMs...

No, not for data AND calls, just data. You can get a reduced rate for calls, but I don't call anyone since I can just e-mail them using the data. The global e-mail package is what I think it was called, but your best bet is to dial *611 and talk to somebody. If you tell them you are interested in the global data package, the one that's $2 a day, they'll know what you're talking about.
