OK here is an app request for all of you. I would love to find a program that would trace my path while hiking via GPS so that I could use it to find my way back to where I started. Has anyone ever heard of anything like that?

BeelineGPS its shareware so it does work for free. Does what your asking for. And its free. somewhat!

I've used GPSed for skiing which is cool, but it's designed to just record your paths so you can see them online, not to help you find your way back somewhere.

Thanks man! I think that was exactly was I was looking for. Navicomputer is a pretty cool project. Everyone should go check that out!
