yes make a copy of the original one first before you over write the new one

If you delete the newer file, the original should appear from ROM.

I've done this when customizing the graphics files in /Windows such as Assets_dialer_Normal.bmp. (I made the button borders darker so easier to see.)

Used Total Commander to overwrite the original, then soft reset to see the new file. Don't like it? Delete it, do a refresh view, and the original shows up again with its older date. Soft reset again to use the older file.
