LOL, I actually meant "garbage" meaning strictly the no "Roam Only" setting. The phone is great except for that!

WinMo doesn't have this by default on any Sprint phone I have used. Maybe someone will find something soon. CDMA has just now come about in Android and since it was patched in nothing works just right yet. Who knows haha

Flipz, there is also an options somewhere that is called select provider I am pretty sure. I read it somewhere, can you confirm that? If we could use a terminal emulator we could change this at will maybe? Just thinking out loud.

BUMP.

I just got my Hero yesterday, and went home to a NO SPRINT service area. I switched from a Q9c, and forced it to roam for the past year and a half. Now with this Hero garbage (The no "Roam Only" settings), I can't make, receive, phone, OR data while there. I have switched the NAM and 1x like others have mentioned, and it just does not work. Something has to be done about this...such a nice handset, perfect everything...but we need to FORCE ROAM.

Anyone?

Sprint has a device that you can plug into your home internet connection, which will allow you to have service at your house. Normally, I think it is ~$100 for the device, and $5/mo thereafter, but if you are threatening to leave, you may get all that waived. It's worth a shot, and would give you signal at home.

Edit: Since you just got your device the other day, you are still within your 30 day grace period. You can use that as a bargaining chip, as all you have to do is send back your hero, and head to another carrier, and you would avoid the ETF.

I haven't heard about that specifically but I'm going to guess what you might be talking about is: /system/etc/apns-conf.xml

This is a listing of all the settings required to get data/mms to work on a certain carrier. However in our rom it's completely unused. In fact our stock rom came with the fake one that comes with the dev phones.

A great way for us to make some headway on this would be for someone to make a dump using busybox while they are roaming, and one while they aren't. We could then run a diff on it and maybe see what has changed and if we can trigger it. That's just me thinking out loud. ;)

Tell me how and I can hook that up.

Found this on another forum - 'echo -n 2 > /data/misc/rild_ril.prefer.network.select-type'

Also found this.

Re: Force Roaming?

Do you enjoy using free mobile to mobile? Has it saved you alot of minutes? Guess what the catch is, if you make a call to another mobile phone while roaming you will use up your anytime minutes.

"... Mobile-to-Mobile applies to calls placed between Sprint & Nextel phones (not available while roaming). "

http://www2.sprint.com/mr/cmastaticf...PlansFlyer.pdf

"Everything Data - with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM
Any Mobile, Anytime: Applies when directly dialing/receiving standard voice calls between domestic wireless numbers as determined when the call is placed using independent third-party and Sprint databases. Available with select Sprint plans and while on the Nationwide Sprint or Nextel National Networks (excludes voicemail, 411 and other indirect methods)."

Just a heads up in case some of you aren't aware of this. Be careful with roaming, I would hate to see anyone rack up a huge bill.

Re: Force Roaming?

I don't really care about using minutes anymore. I use my device for work, email, and tethering to my home pc in case of emergencies at work, I can remote in. I rarely use the phone to talk on (less than 100 minutes a month.) I am awaiting a roam only fix, and I will get the phone again, but as of now, I did send it back. I will keep tabs on this thread, and a few others for this issue. I wish I had known what was needed, I would have gotten those dumps for you guys before I sent it back.

Re: Force Roaming?

So I thought I'd chime in on the whole forced roaming. I've been dinking around with a hero for the past two months working on a easy to use method to force roam because I live in an area where I'm flip flopping between Sprint and no service. Well I not only managed to force roam, but I can select between Alltel or VZW respectively.

The downside, I'm a capitalist, and am looking to profit from the misfortune of the hero and other handsets not having the ability to force roam. So...I need to link up with someone who's savvy with making apps to put this thing into motion. Any takers?
